Anyway, I just wanted to add that i think it's a damn shame that John Popper of Blues Traveler didn't want to be in one of the band's music videos because he is overweight and thought the fact that he isn't a gorgeous young stud would adversely affect the sales of the album. Lastly, I really wished someone had told me that it was ok to be curvy before I starved my 5'11" tall self down to about 100 lbs a few years ago. Couple of quick remarks for some new discs that arrived yesterday (haven't had time for a proper repeated listens of most of 'em because I went to a Kitaro concert yesterday after getting off work). Vanden Plas -- The God Thing This I like very much. Intricate progressive metal with lots of time changes and well mixed, well played keys. Vocals have an interestingly childlike sound. Nightwish -- Oceanborn I'd heard all the comments about Tarja's vocals but STILL wasn't prepared for them. You don't expect an opera singer in a metal band. They are quite interesting and the music is OUTSTANDING. Metal with strings and layers of keys.......ahhhhhhhh. Artension -- Forces of Nature Vitalij and the boys are back! New drummer Gaalaas and bassist Onder make fine additions. I wish Vitalij would write some new patches or play something besides the 01/W, though. He can make it dance on the head of a pin, yeah, but it'd be nice to hear some new sounds. Eldritch -- Headquake Not quite as good as "El Nino" but somewhat better than "Seeds of Rage". I break into a fresh outburst of sobbing whenever I think about Oleg Smirnoff's leaving this band. His solos, sounds, and writing are excellent on this disc. Blind Guardian -- Somewhere Far Beyond Better than "Tales", not quite as good as "Imaginations" or "Nightfall". Some great double-bass work from Thomen and Hansi's in fine form vocalwise as always. Conception -- The Last Sunset Finally got my own copy of this and gave my friend back his copy; my Conception collection is now complete. Not much to say about this one as Conception was still developing their sound. Two things though: 1) Roy Khan rules; and 2) Tore Ostby looks YOUNG in the band pic! Man, I thought I was looking at a Hanson member pic! The Gathering -- Nighttime Birds Overall I think this one's quite nearly as good as "Mandylion". Anneke's voice is heavenly and the crunchy guitars and layered keys make a nice backdrop. Good stuff indeed. ta, Phil ============================================== Phil Carter -- email_address_removed -- Usefulware Tech Support Official Glass Hammer website: http://www.glasshammer.com/ "Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." -- Berthold Auerbach ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 22 Apr 1999 10:39:20 -0400 From: "Richard James" To: Cc: "richard" , Subject: news from Mike Portnoy clinic in Quebec City Message-ID: <00f501be8ccd$e96d6ec0$message_id_removed.qc.ca> Hello !
