This CD is basic somewhat-prog sometimes-rock-sometimes-metal and has some nice sounds although no new ground is broken. Of course, Johansson refers to the jams' own Jens (hello to our resident petty thief) !! As such, if you like the keyboard sounds of Stratovarius, then you are off to a good start. Most songs are in the 4-5 minute range. The Jap version has a bonus track that I actually prefer to at least three of the other songs on the CD but is not worth the extra effort (and coin) to pursue. Michael Romeo plays on this disk which was the main reason I bought it !! However, his playing is rarely in the forefront. Bummer. When he does get some limelight, he is more restrained than what you normally get with SX. Kind of nice in a way, but there is entirely too little of him for me !! The drummer (Jens' brother, I think) alternatively sounds creative and then at times like a drum machine. The singer (I forget his name) is OK. Nothing offensive, nothing great but at least nothing offensive. If the glass is half full, you may well like this CD. If the glass is half empty (e.g., all of you hyper-critical perfectionist guitar players out there, hehehehe ......), you wont. OK, here is mine: In 1998, I started to like metal bands such as Angra, Metallica, Iron Maiden, etc. Them I saw a post by Rogerio Brito on RBT, the biggest brazilian message network on a BBS about some of his favorite bands. One of them was Dream Theater :). I listened to FII and was amazed by theirs songs, from the epic songs, such as Lines In The Sand, Trial Of Tears to the more "pop" ones, such as You Not Me, Anna Lee, Hollow Years, etc. I went to some web sites about DT and them I decided to buy "Images and Words". Well, the rest doesn't matter :). Now DT is my favorite band, and I'm a big fan of Prog Metal/Rock. AMEN!!!! --- My first DT experience was in 96. I played in a band where we covered Rage Against The Machine and Metallica songs. Since I got better and better with playing bass I started to become bored of playing that stuff. So the guitarist told me he knew of a band that was incredibly hard to play. He eventually gave me a cassette copy of IAW. Yet, somehow I didn't like it at first listening (I still don't know why). But the next time I was in a CD shop I saw the IAW cd and bought it. Then I downloaded as many bass tabs as I could find and copied the guitar tabs where I didn't have the bass tabs and started to study IAW. And from that point on they became my all time fav. and I became a crazy DT fan with 3 "converts" in 3 years. Adrian "Chapter One. Friend showed them to me (I&W). I laughed at how lame HE was and how silly the band was because they used keyboards. He got mad at me so to make up for it I ordered the cassette (got it for free from Columbia House, actually) and promised I'd give them a try. Being still in one of those peer pressure phases when I wanted acceptance or what the fuck I forced myself to listen to the cassette, but never really got into it.. When Awake came out, I reluctantly bought that tape. Listened to it. Wasn't big on it. Subscribed to the jam back in college so to print the jams for my friend. It was nice to see a Magna Carta band that actually plays live gigs. The only problem was that the sound in the venue sucked. You couldn't hear the guitar at all, even if you were on the guitarist's side. Even with those problems, Ice Age kicked major ass. They opened with "The Great Divide," the song that's on the Powermad compilation. Their music is definitely heavily influenced by DT, especially the keyboard and guitar. The drummer uses just one bass drum but has the peddle for the double bass effect (sorry, I ain't a musician, so I don't know what it's called). The opening song impressed me as did the instrumental they played a few songs later. Within the instrumental (I do not know any more song titles) came a kick ass drum solo that would rival MP's or even Carl Palmer's (or for a more obscure drummer, Rich Behrends from Mastermind, who blew me away with his solo at Powermad). The! ! ! vocalist, who does double duty on keyboards and is a very busy man throughout the show, sounds just like Dennis DeYoung from Styx. The opening band for the show was pretty interesting. It was called the Jim Walsh Band (or something like that) and was comprised of vocals, two acoustic guitarists, a really cute female bassist and a drummer who seemed to be out of place and would probably fit in better in a heavy metal band. The double acoustic and no electric set up provided some interesting sounds, but all of the songs sounded the same to me. Like Jim, I received the promo disc from One, and I was very impressed also. As a matter of fact, I think I've listened to the tape about 10 times already. Take care, Adam Perkowsky (a.k.a.
