You have to be in California to understand the outrage with gas prices. Prices at cheap stations for the lowest grade gas went from $1.21 to $1.69 in one week. It's not uncommon to see gas prices over $2.00 at higher priced stations. Is it that high in Ohio? And it has nothing to do with supply! Gas prices are inflated in the Metro areas of California just to make money. Due to overzealous enviromental law in CA, there are very few supliers (2?), and they have a monopoly. Gas at a station 1 mile from the infamous refineries (NOT in a high-rent district) often costs $.25 a gallon more than gas in the central valley where it has to be trucked 75 miles. Explain that. The "gas-out" may not accomplish anything but make a statement, but isn't that enough? The real reason behind the California gas situation is probably that the Oil companies are punishing California. Our new governer recently signed a law to ban the additive MTBE from CA gas. Almost immeadiatly they cranked up prices, using a fire at an Oil refinery as a excuse. Cause and effect? my $.02, BH MTBE - A Gas additive refined from components of standard refinery waste, which supposedly would make less air pollution. Instead, it lowers gas mileage, disolves some engine components, and spreads this hazardous waste all over the place. Now that the MTBE has showed up in water samples EVERYWHERE in CA, the misguided tree-huggers, clever oil companies and idiot politicians who mandated it in the first place have finally been overruled, and it is being phased out. We now return to your regularly scheduled DT content... _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Look at it like this. They get together in Feburary to start the new album. Ideas and jams are just flying everywhere. They take a break in March so Portnoy can have time for the newest member of his family. When they join up again, everyone has had time to take those different jams (which Myung likes but doesn't prefer) and work with the structure of them i.e. turn them into songs instead of extended jams (something I think Myung likes just as well as the rest of them). Those insane jams turn into insane songs, with a sensitivity to lyrics. This is just my take on it. NP: Spocks Beard-Day For Night <----- great album!!! If DT doesn't put anything out this year, then this one gets my vote for best album of 1999. They will take second place if that happens because it is going to be real hard for something to top this album IMO. later all === John Parks email_address_removed So much style without substance So much stuff without style Its hard to recognize the real thing It comes along once in a while. -Neil Peart- _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The song, "When", is exactly from this album that I recommended, "My Arms, Your Hearse", which is Opeth's 3rd full length album. It's much heavier than the previous albums and I'm not sure if it's a good starting point. IMO, "Morningrise" would be it, but you can't go wrong with any album of this band. Dream Theater, for me, are one of the only prog bands that can capture such great emotions through their music/lyrics...ToT is a perfect song in that it is stimulating musically and emotionally (if that makes any sense) and the midsection that everyone seems to hate works as a perfect bridge to the climax of the song. i don't think the song would make much sense if it just jumped from part I to part III. the same goes for LtL, Metropolis, and most of their other long stuff too. maybe the reason why i don't mind the parts where DT goes off is because i'm not a guitar player...i don't have the slightest idea how hard something is to play other than if i see/hear the guys hands going crazy fast. in this sense i'm not looking at his guitar playing as a way to impress me, i see it as music...and DT have always been able to keep me interested with their great song writing. to me good song writing isn't some catchy tune that you can never get out of your head...that i find annoying, i find good songwriting as something that keeps you interested/involved with the song (in a nutshell) enough mumblings....back to work Jim Lenart "Sorrowed" icq: 25717769 URL: Mirror of Sorrow, the official Solitude Aeturnus site http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Palladium/5795/solitude.html _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web. It would be yeah, i've gotten into half the bands i listen to from playing them on the air and liking it. nevermore and opeth are the two latest ones. > nice if you sent some comments on how the radio schedules the songs -- > based on which parameters? What is necessary for the radio to include > a song in the airplay schedule? well, this is a college radio station, so the station doesn't make playlists or anything. there's a big shelf with over 300 CDs called Rotation and you can pick whatever you want from that shelf and play it. Also, every fourth song (or 1/4 of your show) can be an optional that you play from your own collection, as long as it meets music policy. Any CD can be donated to the station and it will be reviewed and put into rotation. We're serviced by east/west, so we get every DT cd before it comes out (OIALT is in rotation right now but it's gonna get pulled next week probably), but our CDs don't just come from labels. independent bands will often put some of their songs on cd-r or 7" vinyl and give it to us. Bernd had Noise Records send a promo of Younique to us and that's in rotation right now. Oh yeah, that's another thing - the main thing that decides whether a cd/song gets played is its review. These arent reviews like you read in magazines, i.e. good/bad - the point of these reviews is simply to give an idea of what kind of music it is so that the DJ can decide whether or not he wants to play it even if he hasn't heard of the band before. i'm not sure how commercial radio stations or even other college stations do their shows, but i'd be interested to hear it. i know pellaz works at WREK in atlanta - care to enlighten us paul? moo. *** END OF TRANSMISSION *** ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Apr 1999 16:26:15 -0400 (EDT) From: CLARK ABEL To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: IBANEZ PLASTIC BUSHINGS SOLUTION!!!!!!!! This was a lot easier than that stupid nail polish solution and, oh yeah, it actually works. Anyone else having this problem with going through the bushings too quickly should try this, it works great. Plus I get to play with fire while performing guitar maintenance. The only problem I had was that the bushings started to open up a lot as they expanded, but I solved this by squeezing them shut with a wet paper towel (to keep from burning my fingers) immediately after taking the lighter off the bar, so that they un-melt tight around the bar. This worked well and unless I run into some unforseen problems with this solution this is like the greatest discovery of my life (besides maybe masturbation). S&R used to collect dust, but now it's my second favorite Vai, second only to ALS. And I even arrange my CD's (all 4 billion of them) alphabetically and chronologically - too weird. The thing that sucks is, many of my empty CD cases have been stolen, but not the liner notes (the fuck that broke into my car got a little less than he was expecting... :)). So, I use those Case Logic cases. So, when I get a new Angra, Aerosmith, or Tori Amos CD, guess who has to rearrange the WHOLE FUCKING THING!! Yes, I know it's stupid, but it's the only thing in the world that I'm REALLY anal about... David <<<<<<<<<<<< I'm one of those whacko people who may like only one or two CD's of a band and buy the rest of their albums just so I have the set. I doubt I'm alone in this, but it's what I do. Anyway, Fire Garden was my first real introduction to Steve Vai's works (I'm a late bloomer, I know). After buying it and intaking its milky residue, I sought out more of his works. I picked up Passion and Warfare. Kind of 80's but still OK. Alien Love Secrets was a major score. Flexable was strange yet charming at the same time. And then I only had one left (at the time), the one that I'd seen many of in used bins around the world (or Cassia County anyway). It's the one with that fucking freak of nature Devin Townsend that fucked up Natural Science on the Working Man tribute. Fuck. So I bought it, listened to maybe the first 10 minutes of it and shuffled it off in the V section of my CD shelf. Anyway, two years later (or something like that), I was in a hurry to get to work and was rummaging around for CD's to listen to. I accidentally grabbed that one instead of ALS (I file my CD's alphabetically/chronologically. Sick, eh?) So I'm sitting at work wanting to listen to Bad Horsie and I have Deep Down in the Pain. Fuck. So I pop it in anyway, and for some reason, Devey Wevey's vocals came to life for me. Crazy shit. And with it came a grudging respect for the man. Then I bought Ocean Machine and thought he was one of the premier rising musicians of our time along with the likes of Ron Thal and Hanson (lol). Then I bought Infinity and now I worship the man as my new and rightful savior; the purger of my sins and healer of my wounds. I've ordered the two Strapping Young Lad albums ordered on the faith that he will not fail me by creating shitty music. But, hell, God made spiders, too, so I can't dis Devin if he fucked up. >>>>>>>>>>>> David Dixon, MCP Internet Developer Integrated Information Systems, Inc. email_address_removed email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Apr 1999 14:18:29 -0700 From: David Dixon To: "'email_address_removed'" Subject: Chainsaw Message-ID: <3093FD59DB69D11193AA00A0C9605649809352@messaging> BJ (heheheh) said the mysterious "Chainsaw" has been his guitar roadie for 20 years, so I doubt it.... <<<<<< In a message dated 99-04-13 14:37:27 EDT, you write: << The guitar tech/roadie (AKA "Chainsaw") sang - >> As in Chainsaw Cane of the Minneapolis band Slave Raider ?
