Songs without lyrics somtimes don't seem like "whole" songs. But what about this "focused songwriting" on FII? Is this in comparison to other DT albums? I've heard this many times, and just don't get it. What about PMU? Lie?, SDV?, Metropolis, etc, etc? These weren't well written songs? What exactly on FII is more focused or better songwriting than other DT releases? Is this just another way to say that you personally like the songs on FII better than other DT? If we're talking opinions, I think the songwriting on FII had less "depth" than previous work. Does "less depth, less complexity, more mainstream" equal "more focused"? my $.02, BH _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Does "less >depth, less complexity, more mainstream" equal "more >focused"? By focused songwriting on FII, I mean that the band was making a conscious effort to trim the songs of their fat. With that being said, you can hear a difference in the songwriting from Awake to FII (I'm not counting ACOS because it's not a full length album and it was mostly written in the I&W era.) The band attempted to structure their material a bit more. Now whether or not you argue that the band was attempting to be more "mainstream", that's for you to decide. But, it can be said that the band was trying to write more structured material. However, more structured doesn't necessarily mean shorter. I think Lines in the Sand is a brilliant song that really developed over the 12 minutes it had on the CD. However, New Millennium might have been a better song if you cut the entire middle funk section. I don't feel like it adds anything to the part of the song surrounding it. In fact, if you played around with NM and just cut the funk section entirely, you'd hardly know it was missing. Trial of Tears is another tune that could be trimmed down. I like the tune, but are the two lengthy solos really necessary? It's a matter of preference I guess. I love the first 4 minutes and the last 2 minutes, but at times, I'll skip over the solos because I don't feel like listening to them. And, a well written song should never make you want to do that. Each part of the song should lend something to the entire piece instead of just sitting their on its own. Anyways, I don't know if I should elaborate any further. I mean I could, but I have tests to study for :) I guess defining what a song is is almost as impossible as defining what progressive music is. In the end, it comes down to a matter of personal opinion. -Bogie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Apr 1999 17:42:56 EDT From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Best Power Ballads (Metal/Prog) Message-ID: In a message dated 99-04-13 15:40:30 EDT, you write: << Actually, I think there's a double CD set called Rock Ballads out there. It's called "Monster Ballads" and you can order it online at www.razorandtie.com.... and the reason I know this is because my wife saw the commercial, wrote down the info, and gave it to me (hinting at a possible future gift, methinks). That commercial cracks me up every time! It starts off with "They taught us how to live... they taught us how to love" or some shit like that. Lemme tell you, Poison and Warrant didn't teach me how to love.... I learned by watching the kid down the street's dad's porno tapes! *big grin* Anyway, if you're looking for a set of 80's style power ballads, that CD looks like a great place to start. If you're looking for more of a heavy power-ballad sound with lyrics that don't necessarily deal with love found and/or love lost, there's TONS out there. There's been mention of some great ones already on the Jam: Savatage, Manowar, Skid Row (Slave To the Grind-era). There's so many others, but a few come immediately to mind: Queensryche (Anybody Listening, Someone Else), Iced Earth (I Died For You, A Question Of Heaven, Melancholy (Holy Martyr), Watching Over Me, Blessed Are You, Consequences), and Testament (The Ballad, The Legacy, Return To Serenity, Trail Of Tears). The list goes on and on. Oh, I also wanted to point out that while "November Rain" by GNR is a great song, one of my alltime faves which is also by GNR has not been mentioned yet: Estranged. Brilliant arrangement with some very tasty lead guitar work from Slash. Just a great, great song. Very moving. IMHO, anyway. Well, that's 'bout it for now. Laterz... Matt T. Or to be more expressive, FW is certainly takes a tad bit more listening time to fully comprehend the intricasies and emotional impact, but therein lies the magic. It is definately a different side of the prog rock coin, but just as incredible, if not more so than DT. Just because the musicianship isn't flaunted or thrust into ones face doesn't mean the impact is different. Just thought I'd express the fact that FW, who have influenced Dt in some ways, and vice versa, to some extent, derserve more respect than they get. And I;m here to give it to 'em yeah. Second, regarding the artwork, I think since Hugh Syme was not the actual designer on this one, it suffered compared to previous and excellently designed FW cd's. Somewhat disappointing, I agree. But oh well. Hopefully next time Syme will be back at the design helm. As a fellow CD artist, I think art is VERY important part of the musical listening experience, especially in prog circles. And for those who NEED to know, I would get Parallels, then Perfect Symmetry, followed by INSIDE OUT and lastly, No Exit. Then maybe Enchant - Blueprint of the World. OR EVEN BETTER YET, buy the video. I am not a bassist but I PAID for the video. Come on, John Myung is worth your money. And while you are at it, pick up Mike Portnoy's video. Portnoy's, Petrucci's, and Rudess' videos are all very good instructionals for ALL musicians regardless of your instrument. Portnoy describes time signatures and how to make them more interesting (let's face it - the most PROG part of DT is the drums). Petrucci and Rudess has very good information on the harmonic structure of music. I would say Myung's is the only one that doesn't really cross over. It is pretty much made for bassist. I wish he would have gone more into how he writes basslines. How maybe he considers the chord progression and decides when to strengthen Peturcci's lines (double) and when he decides to add something that is more independent yet adds to the song. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Apr 1999 19:48:53 EDT From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: IBANEZ PLASTIC BUSHINGS SOLUTION!!!!!!!! Message-ID: Greetings fellow Jammers & Ibanez players! I also have experienced that little problem w/ those plastic doo-hickeys and this is the solution that worked for me: --- First off, the only tool you'll need for this is fire. So grab a lighter or a pack of matches. --- Pull the bar out of the guitar but keep the bushings on the bar. --- Now hold the bushing end of the bar over (or in) the flame letting them melt oh so slightly. (Don't worry if they turn black.) --- The flame will make the plastic "expand", thus creating a snug fit in the hole. ("Uh-huh, he said 'hole' ") Just do this a little at a time until it seems like the bar will barely slide back inside. (Let them cool a few seconds before putting the bar back in.) If you do it too for long a time, you won't get the bar back in. HELPFUL HINTS: Be sure to melt or "expand" the bushings all around. If you hold one side of them in the flame, they will melt obscurely and not fit. --- Trust me- this works- I've been doing it for 8 years. The flame not only "expands" the plastic, but it also hardens it more, which makes it last longer than it would otherwise. I only go through 1 pair of bushings year or so. If the same problem persists, you may have not melted them enough the first time. Also, if you go 9 or 10 months on those same bushings, and they start to loosen up again, you can go ahead and re-melt them. This usually works more than once on the same set, otherwise go spend another few cents to buy new ones and melt those. Now I have a question: Why the hell does the hole the bar fits in able to screw and unscrew? Why would you need to adjust that? The "barhole" on my main Universe kept coming loose after about 8 years of abuse. It was so bad that I would need to tighten it every fricken day, so I carefully dripped a little extra-strength super glue on the thread (while it was screwed out), and screwed it back in before it dried. That also worked like a charm. Try it if you have that same problem. It works great! HAPPY SNUG WHAMMY-ING!! - JK ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 4803 **************************
