Go to the national midnight star site and click on the rush mp3 link and have winamp ready. it is very cool and we should consider doing an all dt mp3 stream or just an all prog mp3 stream. For mp3 broadcast info, go to http://www.shoutcast.com and stay tuned, I will hopefully have a site of mp3 live broadcast streaming up soofeaturing comedy shit and lots of prog and crazy shit. Message-ID: Hello all, Firstly thanks to the people that replied to my enquiry about the DAO problems. FTI, I was using Adaptec Easy CD Creator and using Verbatim media. The problem however, was not caused by the burner or the media or the software I was using - it was caused by the CD player I was testing it on. After burning several discs of .WAV files on my HD with DAO recording at both 2x and 1x burn speeds which WOULD NOT play properly on my stereo, I then decided to test them in my brother's stereo. Strangely enough they worked - fine and dandy with no gaps and clear audio. I was dumbfounded. FYI, my stereo is nothing great, it's a Philips FW339C - a relatively new model only a few months old. My brother's stereo is a Philips FW26, about five years old and no longer in production - it played the same DAO recorded discs that mine wouldn't, without a problem. Same with my parents 10 year old Akai CD player. I've even gone into electrical retail stores and tried out brand new units identical to my stereo and they all have the same problem - even the better Philips models with the pro-logic capabilities couldnt handle it. Other stereos in the store, such as Panasonic, Sony and even Teac and Sanyo, played the DAO disc without a problem. Philips was the only candidate. I've talked to Philips technicians and even they can't give me an answer why this happens, though my guess is that the laser or DA conervter or something to do with the way the CD is read, cannot keep up with DAO style recordings. That's what you get with cheap components though. I'll know better next time. I've checked numerous FAQs on the topic of CDRs and none of them cover this sort of problem, so now I'm faced with the choice of a new stereo or putting up with those fucking annoying two second gaps. If anyone at all can give me some insights as to what exactly would be causing the problem, I'd muchly appreciate it, otherwise stay away from Philips stereo units. Cheers, Luke. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 Apr 1999 01:34:48 -0400 From: Brian Larkin To: email_address_removed Subject: Wait to Breathe, Ee Rot Oh May Knee Uh. About "Erotomania": John explained this one at his clinic in PA a few weeks ago. According to JP, erotomania is some type of psychological disorder characterized by the viewing of an idol, celebrity, or personal hero as a deity; obsession with this person or group of people, and abandonment of one's own beliefs or ideas as a result. JP went on to say that the entire AMBI trilogy (though he didn't address TSM) was about a person with erotomania, which certainly gives us some new insight to the lyrics of "Voices". Anyway, that's what the term means. If it makes anyone feel better, I thought it was a sexual thang at first, too. ;0) This should be confirmed and put in the FAQ! ~Brian, a dictionary. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Apr 1999 22:40:01 -0700 (PDT) From: John Parks To: ytsejam dream theater Subject: Aquarium Rescue Unit Message-ID: Don't you just love it when you rediscover a cd thats been hiding in your collection that you haven't listened to in a long time. In my opinion Progresive Music relates back to a classical style. It's not just straight foward music that garage bands just picking up their instruments play. It is a musicians feeling. You have to have some understanding of music theory and study your instrument. For one I don't feel labeling music is a good thing because it limits possibilities. We have limited Dream Theater to only releasing odd time music. When maybe they have songs that sound really great, but stay in a 4/4 time signature so they can't release it. Maybe a member of Dream Theater can giver their opinion of what Progressive Music is. Now, onto the talk of my #1 band QR...first, to the guy who basically said QR was garbage, let me say I pity you and your close-mindedness. One thing is to not be that much into a band or not even to like it, but it's a whole other bag to slam them like you did. That's just plain uncalled for. As for the "prog" argument...I'm kind of using another Jammer's definition here because I do think it applies to QR, and that is the thematic element of the album. Their albums as a whole are usually joined by a certain theme(except for HitNF, which was VERY dissapointing) What makes QR Prog to me personally is the thematic structure of the albums, which are usually pretty clear and cohesive. Another thing is their sound. First, Geoff Tate's voice, which has one of the best overall ranges from top to bottom that I've ever heard, his phrasing is also some of the best I've ever heard on a a rock singer, next is(or should I say was) Chris DeGarmo's tasty choices of notes in his solos, well, none of that makes it "prog" but that, together with the song-writing itself, the arrangements, etc. make it more "progressive" Rage For Order has some Keyboard work in it for those who think Prog has to have Keyboards in it. Operation:Mindcrime is one long Rock Opera, all joined together in one of the best stories I've heard on an album(Who really DID kill Mary???) Empire, while kind of Pop-sounding, is very accessible and Anybody Listening, Della Brown, Empire, Silent Lucidity all have that Artistic structure that makes QR so great(can't describe it, but It's a singular style) Promised Land IS very Prog-sounding, in every sense of the word IMO. Lyrically, it's incredible(And for the most part, I ignore lyrics, but this album blows me away) The Songs themselves are fantastic, with some great moods(Promised Land, Disconnected, I am I, Out of Mind.) The overall theme of personal introspection is very evident throughout the album, and all that makes for what is my #1 desert island album...:) So, for the guy who asked about Mindcrime, if you like Fates Warning(who I find very similar to QR, in fact even Adler seems to have a somewhat similar style to Geoff Tate) or Rush(I sometimes cringe at this comparison, but it's one that many people make, so I'm making it to as a reference point, it's more their overall sound that's Rush-like) then you'll probably like Queensryche. Mindcrime is a classic album, and should definitely be in a collection, but if you're looking for something more progressive, get Promised Land. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 Apr 1999 02:15:30 -0500 From: Big Swifty To: email_address_removed Subject: DT in Korea Message-ID: > Okay, I searched all over UACM, and for the life of me, I can't find any > mention of DT playing in Korea in June. I see statements like this all the time. I know it is kind of not to be taken literally. It is more like saying "I was humbled" but it has such a negative context. I don't see how that thought even enters people's minds. It simplifies music almost to the point of being a sport. "he will always run faster than me so why am I even trying". When I hear great music (technical or not) I get the opposite feeling. And great music is something that TOUCHES me in such away that my own creativity is tapped just by listening to it. I'm not talking stealing. Its the opposite. Its as if I hear something that I think is so revolutionary or just plain inspiring that my mind can't help but start to get musically creative. It sparks what I love so much about music. Its that feeling that you get but you just can't describe. But it definitely isn't something that makes me want to NOT play music. What makes me get musically frustrated are the moments I DON'T have that feeling. When I hear songs like Lines in the Sand, Hell's Kitchen, Eve, Voices, 6:00, and especially QUITE A BIT of the Chroma Key album - I just have to pick up my guitar and play. Either to complement the music or I just turn the CD off and start to play for hours. I can think of many occasions where I have just enjoyed hours of playing guitar to a CD. Genesis - Trick of the Tail is a great one. It is rare that I mimic a CD however. In other words, hearing GREAT music is an influence - not a block. And yes - I am the guy that has come up with very ANALYTICAL observations of some DT songs. So don't read this as "its all about feel" and don't read my analytical observations as "its all about theory and technique". Things just aren't that simple. The analyzing usually comes after the inspiration. And then the analyzing sparks even more inspiration. The first level you just get that gut feeling that taps your creativity. The second level (not a higher level, just a different one) is where you come to understand WHY you liked it so much (analyzing). Both are good sources of developing you musicality. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 08 Apr 1999 11:05:48 +0100 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?Bj=F8rnar?= Bevolden To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: New reviews + news ! The only true=20 prog bands I've found are DT, YES, RUSH, Empty Tremor and Spock's Beard (IMO= )=20 and almost all projects DT-members worked on. I bought PSOG by FW, Promised Land by QR and Twilight in Olympus by SX.=20 Although I like all these albums i would never consider them prog. That's probably the difference between "progressing" (QR,FW) or=20 "being progressive"(DT). And although "to progress" and "being progressive"=20 might sound similar, they're not the same. I don't object to good rock/metal but changing sounds don't make them=20 progressive in any way. I think a big factor in how progressive a band is, is the musical background=20 of the musicians.
