But if you would like to take a survey, you can have people send their favorites to YOU, and you can post the results after you compile and total them. This has been done before, and for you or anyone who is interested, there was was a "ytsejam" survey of favorite albums of all time. The results can still be viewed at the DT website (www.dreamtheater.net). There should be a button near the bottom of the left side that says "Ytsejam Survey Top 40". Message-ID: Reading all the thread flamings, I must stand up in defense for Beatles and Ringo! No one says/said that Ringo is a monster drummer, but he did his job great, and Beatles are what they are with him! Little by little the thread turned into "Beatles sucks!" which IMHO is pretty ignorant and stupid to say! So they had few "childish" songs, so what? The fact is that Beatles will remain as one of the best bands ever! Their melodies, arrangements and music are immortal, even in songs like "When I'm 64"! The music is nice and develops further great! Even in their realy period they have some pretty cool musical ideas, if you just listen careful enough without seeking Metropolis-duet-solo-type-of-thing in it! While personal opinions are pretty much around to make confussions in threads, there ARE some things which are absolute! What is absolute is that Beatles are great! Far too great! I don't have enough words to explain it and don't intend to do here! If you don't like them - fine! It's your choice! But don't say "they suck!" Not only prog is some of the best musics around! If drummer doesn't change rhythms 5 times in a second it doesn't makes him bad! What counts is how the tune sounds all together! And Beatles tunes sounded PERFECT! Take Dead Can Dance - they are so un-progish, but it's damn good music!!! For the end, name 1 album that can match even near to "Abbey Road" beauty??? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Mar 1999 23:27:13 +0100 From: =?Windows-1252?Q?Mats_Rydstr=F6m?= To: Subject: rant: state of metal Message-ID: <005101be70c5$515bee00$6de0143e@lordrosse> Good evening fuckers! Metal is as dead now as it is from time to time since it's inception in the 60's. Sales are just one bit of the puzzle, of course, but not an insignificant one. Prove me metal is selling currently. The greater metal community is losing members as people grow up, what remains is in large parts a nostalgia thing, or continued success of already established acts. Which, in time, is reduced to nostalgia. Guess what - saying metal's dead is a SIMPLIFICATION of the truth! My god, how could he (Lars) be allowed to do such a thing?!? I listen to 5-10 new metal albums a week. (It's certainly breeding, but it could as well be from the well known post-mortem ejaculation.) Of all other music I have the great (mis)fortune to hear, several of my favourite genres have a significantly better ratio than metal when it comes to producing innovative, refreshing, enjoyable and listenable albums. No, I'm not fucking saying I don't like metal (or prog) or DT, or Metallica, or Symphony X, or... But that's not what any of this is about. Manowar (which I like a lot BTW!) being very popular still in Germany and other parts of Europe is not metal being very alive. Or that bands like Pantera, Megadeth and Slayer continue to put out records. It would be a lot easier to say Metal's Alive! if SYL, Opeth, Meshuggah... etc were more than just a few very creative underground bands. Metal needs something big, innovative and important to be widely considered as alive again. Oh, I forgot to tell you Doc: These are OPINIONS. P.S #2: For the people that whine about the unfairness in why they aren't big rock stars and famous musicians - well, try real life. I'm not sure you'll like it, though. I saw someone posted R. Rokket as THE worst drummer ever. Well, I think he's not THAT bad, there are worse drummers.... BTW, speaking of influences, Poison was one of the bands that made me buy an electric guitar.es, I play since I was 12(now I'm 24, but don't trust the years, I'm not really competent, but work hard to improve ;-)) but mostly folk music of my country, and some classical too. But bands like Warrant, Poison, B. Jovi, D. Leppard, Cinderella, and all the glam stuff of latter 80's was really influential over here. Mostly 'cause those where the only FM playable music (for FM owners, yes, the ballads). Finally I really must mention the black album. If wasn't for it I've prob. never gotten involved in heavy stuff (previous discs), and finally DT. So I'm really have to say thanx to all those bands, despite the fact that I don't really hear that nowadays very often. Well, maybe yes Warrant's Dog eat Dog and D.Lep's Hysteria and On through the night, my really faves. ;) "Sorrow is a woman" DL Yan Elmar Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Mar 1999 18:04:27 -0500 From: Brian Larkin To: email_address_removed Subject: Some much needed DTC: JP Clinic (spoylerz) Message-ID: Well, it sure was an exhausting 2 days ... for anyone who hasn't already found this out, 6-hour-long bus rides SUCK!! The things DT has me doing, lemme tell ya ... anyway, aside from my all-day traveling escapade, Monday was a good day. Since the taxi service in New Britain sucks monkey nads, and also because I had an unexpected 2-hour layover in NYC, I only arrived for the clinic around 6:50 or so (Mad props to Michael Emerson for saving me a seat! For those of you who may have been there and seen me walk in and take this seat, which was in the middle of the front row, thanks for the nasty looks, and =P ... Just kidding!) :) En-ee-wae, when I got there, "Biaxident" was playing ... killer tune, with some great keyboard/piano melodies and very tasteful lead work from JP! By the time John came out, we also heard "Another Dimension" (what "Burning My Soul" should have been -- the main guitar riff and keyboards are very similar to the BMS verses), and part of "When the Water Breaks". Having heard the first 2 again when John played them, I can say that, IMHO, LTE2 sounds about 10x as good as LTE1. I could be wrong, but those 2 songs sounded better than anything I've heard in a while ... "good good good good good good great stuff!" (anyone know what Vai song I pulled that from?) The clinic itself was well worth the exhausting trip ... having missed the LTE shows, it was great to see some of the songs performed live. (Setlist: PS, Biaxident, AD, SoG, UM). Some of the more interesting things mentioned were John's "Disney influence" (he joked that SoG could have been part of "Mulan"), the breaking down of the main PS open-string lick and the UM intro riff (latter of which is all picked, for those who were in doubt), Metropolis 2 ("Well, we could *talk* about it ...") ... and other stuff I'm not thinking of right now. Unfortunately, there was no videotaping allowed ("I'm not sure Warner Bros. would appreciate that ...), but I got some good pics ... There was also a guy there who looked almost *identical* to JP! At first I thought it might be his brother, but it was not ... very spooky stuff. Finally, to wrap up probably the longest post I've ever sent to the 'jam, JP signed autographs for everyone. Mike and I waited until the line died down (we wanted to invite him across the street for a bite to eat, but that never happened) ... John was very friendly, signed a shitload of stuff for me, and thanked me for making the trip ("You're kidding!"). I had a great time. I found out after I got back that there was a clinic added in North Wales, PA, which is less than an hour from where I live. I might go.
