Scatterbrain started out as Ludichrist and with some member changes became Scatterbrain. One of these former members is now the drummer in The Magic Elf (a very kick ass insturmental band). There were two classical pieces they covered. Sonata #5 and Sonata #11 both by Mozart, they are the coolest versions of classical music I've ever heard. (No disrepect to Savatage) Korgy was accurate with his discription of the music but I would add the songs are kinda campy and pretty much a novelty. How could you take it seriously with songs like "Grandma's House of Babes", "Swiss Army Girl", and the classic "Mr. Johnson and the Juice Crew" However, the musicians do have serious chops. C'mon....i love listening to those CD's for thier vocal prowess.....(sarcasm included) but i do like the guitars. Talk about some speed metal....nothing like the Ninja to get me in a mood not to even think about picking up a guitar. But, speaking of which, the band Alcatraz had Steve Vai and IIRC, Yngwie Malmstein....is this correct. I have one of the tapes, with Desert Diamond and Stripper. Who was the other guitarist on it. Was it Malmstein or someone else....and which ones where Malmstein and Vai both on? Now that i'm on the subject of Vai, i'm gonna ask about Bad 4 Good. What are those little boys doing now, especially McLaughflin (IIRC, the guitar genuis kid). I was listening to thier tape the other day, and asked myself what the fuck are they doing now. They both make significant appearances on each other's cd)... it's (and this is of course, all IMO) the Becker solos on Jewel and Saturation Point. That album is huge (though just try and fathom what it'd be like had they better production.... we'd never recover from the sounds!) and IMO extremely important to understanding a lot of the newer shredders out there (especially the European scene). Friedman is massively Uli Jon Roth influenced, and MANY of today's greatest shredders (in the true shred "metal" sense) are hugely influenced by Friedman. Or Cacophony... however you want to look at it. In any case, that album has a dark meaning to me, as I listened to it on repeat while reading H.P. Lovecraft's "The Case of Charles Dexter Ward" at age 13 when I first got it. Even the parts that sound like they should be uplifting seem evil to me as a result. ;) Becker and Friedman are the reason I decided to be a musician. They're a whole world of influence to me. -- Chris Ptacek - email_address_removed "Everything that can be invented has been invented." -- Charles H. I started listening to Opeth because they have some of the most beautiful acoustic passages that I have/had ever heard and the acoustic passages are some of the most important parts of their songs (not to mention that I'm listening to less and less heavy metal these days -- so, I basically listen to Opeth and some easy-listening stuff nowadays). BTW, I don't have any problems with growls (in fact, sometimes I don't even remember some bands I like have such vocals until I show the songs to some friends and they say "oh, there are those damn vocals again"), but the growler in Opeth is the main songwriter. :-) And as far as the band "kicking ass", I agree completely. :-) > ~~Amanda > leaning from prog metal girl to doom metal girl > (oh man am I loving Katatonia) Well, Opeth's vocalist also did some vocals on Katatonia's "Brave Murder Day" album and "Songs of Decay" EP. Message-ID: > I remember reading a quote from Ringo where he said: > "I was and still am the greatest rock drummer of all time." > So I def think he had an ego prob. > Question: Is it still an ego when there is no justification? Well, that really depends on whether you think being the greatest rock drummer of all time is any great compliment. Note that rock, especially when preceded by the suffix "and roll", is not a terribly rhythmically complex artform in and of itself. Most of it's in 4/4 time, a time sig that's fairly beat into people in the "Western" world and thus is quite easy to play in, and the beats used in rock are usually simple. duh duh DUH duh or DUH duh duh duh. So virtually anyone who can do that kind of keeping time consistently can call themselves the greatest rock drummer, when you're talking strictly rock. When you mix other forms of music in there, you're likely going to come up with something more rhythmically complex, and hence prog, fusion, and virtually any other genre where rock is mixed with other musics. As for your question, it is still ego if there is no justification, it's just not with the ego operating on the reality principle as it should. The ego is just the function of the mind that balances the id (desires and drives) and ego (propriety) and creates the self-concept. -- Craig Griffith: High school student, guitar player, King of Craigland http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Dell/8509/ "I may make you feel, but I can't make you think" -Ian Anderson ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 14 Mar 1999 11:18:55 -0700 From: David Dixon To: "'email_address_removed'" Subject: Johnny Kelly Message-ID: <3093FD59DB69D11193AA00A0C9605649809307@messaging> Hey all: You know, it's kinda funny how Johnny Kelly came to be a member of Type O Negative. He was Sal Abruscato's (previous drummer, who quit to join Life of Agony) drum tech, and the reason TON chose him is because, A) they knew him, and B) he had the right image (dark, crazy, weird). They didn't even really audition him or anyone else, but he fits WAY better than Sal ever did (IMHO, of course). Other people like Sal better (and yes, he was TECHNICALLY a better drummer, but TON doesn't need a technically kick-ass drummer).... BTW, anyone heard any news of when the new Type O disc will be released? It was originally supposed to be on September 21st, 1998 (the first day of autumn), then it was gonna be December 21st, 1998 (the first day of winter) - they're just like that. This is my first post to the mailinglist (and hopefully not the last). Concerning: "I hate to say it, but if it weren't for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" inspiring me to start learning guitar, I probably wouldn't be on this list or where (not whore, dammit) I'm at as a musician today (absolutely nowhere, but skilled).[..]Just think back to when you started out as musicians and who it was who got you started... You DO have them to thank, whether you like 'em now or not. :)" I guess nearly any musician who is now in his early twenties started out with Nirvana, Metallica und such stuff. As you say it's not difficult, I don't think it's good stuff at present but I have to be thankful that they brought me on the path to DT. To all this MetallicA stuff: I think it's shit! I don't listen to it, nor do I play any of their songs anymore. And their new stuff is the shittiest I've ever heard. Of course this is only my opinion and is worth less than the keyboard I wrote it with. Concerning: "DTC: Dream Theater still rules. :} I wonder how different things will be without derek. i'm guessing (from previous posts) that they have much different styles...? yes no?" I guess that everything will take a different turn. About derek I have quite different opinions. On the one hand, I thank him for the great ass-kicking work on FII and Platypus. Yet on the other hand I've seen him be really bad. As far as I perceive it DT hardly ever makes mistakes live (except for one show where MP made a mistake during PMU which threw all the others off-track). One show I saw on TV from the Monsters Of Rock in Bra. derek made 5-10 serious mistakes on UAGM. He also always had a lots of problems with LTL, which shows that he might be a good studio player but that his technique is not so good (OIAL showes me that he's not so terrible after all). Additionally to this he is a very different personality compared to the others (especially myung, labrie). Jordan was the best replacement possible. I just got blown away when I put in LTE and listened to Paradigm Shift. He surely will have a huge progressive impact on the new DT disc. And I think that he is probably the most talented keyboardist around in prog rock/metal. Looking forward like hell to the new DT disc. First Question: By the way if the rules of this list forbid talking about Metallica being sold out why do so many people talk about it? Can someone explain that to me?
