But that is just 'ONE' song too. With 'ONE' main heavy riff. How many other intricate riffs have you heard Lars do and pull them off live for that matter. Its just that the other guys (Portnoy, Donati) have so many other things they bring to the music when they play double bass, not just mimicking what the guitarist/bassist is doing. later all Lets get it on, WOOOO!!! == John Parks email_address_removed _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Yep, Marty Friedman. It's a very interesting CD, most of the later solo records he did veer toards new age.. BTW it's just Marty and Castronovo playing on it, actually, and the latter positively kills ass on it. Or maybe he kicks, I don't know. --- Jens. There was one track on it where they played a classical piece (Beethoven, I think) a la Savatage. Trying to jump in before Madsman does on this one. Becker, basically, was one of the rising stars in the guitar world before he developed ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. Nowadays he has trouble even feeding himself, to say nothing of playing guitar. Still, he's released another album of truly outstanding music, called "Perspective", which features some tracks he recorded before he was too ill to play, and some music he wrote and then had friends play for the disc. It is a triumph both musically and emotionally. Becker also was in Cacophony with Marty Friedman (now in Megadeth). They released two albums of speed-metal-shred, "Speed Metal Symphony" and "Go Off!". Terrifyingly intricate music with, unfortunately, equally terrifyingly bad vocals. After that one Jason released "Perpetual Burn", a solo disc with some excellent neoclassical work and great playing. Jason also played on David Lee Roth's "A Little Ain't Enough" album and toured with DLR very briefly before his illness made him unable to continue. For the story on what Jason's up to these days, visit his website at http://www.intres.com/jasonbecker/ >They also i believe mentioned Dragons Tears, either a cd or song by >Marty Friedman(?) Friedman used to be a solo artist and is a good friend of Jason Becker. After they broke Cacophony up, Marty released a solo disc "Dragon's Kiss" around the same time Jason released "Perpetual Burn". "Dragon's Kiss" is speed metal and shred all the way. In 1992, despite being in Megadeth now, Marty did an abrupt about-face and released a new age CD "Scenes". Little shred here, mostly Japanese new age-feel music (Kitaro helped produce the CD). His next two solo releases, "Introduction" and "True Obsessions", are a similar style of music. Evidently Marty likes a much different style of music when he's playing on his own time and not in Megadeth. :) ta, Phil ========================================================= Phil Carter -- email_address_removed http://www.mindspring.com/~philcarter Check out the Glass Hammer website at http://www.glasshammer.com/ "Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." -- Berthold Auerbach ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 13 Mar 1999 14:55:44 -0500 From: "Metzger, Mark" To: "'(ytsejam)'" Subject: Superior Jap CD Message-ID: >> Was checking out cdnow and saw they have Superior >> "Unique" for sale... First, you get two extra songs and not one !! One is a short studio cut which is straight-forward but pretty decent (ever hear it live Cashman ?? hehehehe). The other is an acoustic version of "Why" that is really cool. They did a completely different arrangement of the song with sounds that one would have not thought possible to be associated with the song but it works for me. And, it has Andre Matos of Angra adding some supporting vocals. It has to be out there for cheaper than $32 though !! "Perpetual Burn" is Jason Becker's 1st (and only???) solo album. Marty Friedman plays on a few solos on it. JB & MF had a band together called Cacophony. MF has about 4 solo CDs, they ALL are GREAT. His 2nd & 3rd are mellow, relaxing, kinda "new age-ish". ALL CDs are available through Shrapnel Records. LAst time I heard JB was that he had ALS & was dying :( But, also, he was writing new music w/ hired musicians. Not sure what happened with that. If anyone knows, please contact me - thanx. We talked a bit about the LTE shows and he asked if I was wearing earplugs at the L.A. show (he said it was "one of the loudest shows I've ever played"). We also talked about the upcoming LTE2 and he confirmed that this would pretty much have to be it since Jordan is now in DT. Marty has about 4 solo albums out. I have purchases all 4 in the past but sold the first one and the last one., Dragon Kiss, and True Obsesion. I sold these two cause they reminded me of what Via did after S&R, i like the guitar instrumentals, but didn't like the singing. I do still own the middle two MF: Scenes, & MF: Introduction. These two are very slow giutar groovy (hard to describe). Kind of like Via's Sex and Religion on downers. Don't get me wrong there is some goo fast playing in there, but it's not anything like his stuff with Megadeth. VERY GOOD cd's! Play them as background music when reading or cruising the web. There are lots of bells, rain sounds and other good stuff. YOU WILL NOT BE SORRY! i'd classify this as progrock, but thats just my opinion. These two are completely instrumental, no singing but there are some voices talking in the background on some songs. His riffs sound like some real good blues running through Via's huge midi stack.
