I just think that the whole MP3 thing is inevitable, and whether we like it or not, it's gonna be fact soon enough. As soon as a band/label gets the idea, then it will happen, and I would imagine it could be fixed in such a way that the bands wouldn't lose money, anymore than they already do from taping CD's. I mean, you have to pay fees to get into certain sites as it is. If the band was to have their own individual site to distribute the MP3, for a monthly fee, they could conjure up enough interest on-line to make more money off of it. As long as the medium of Cd's and tapes doesn't get totally eradicated. I'm sorry, I would much rather invest my money in new music than in new computer doodads!! It tends to be cheaper. In other countries, people don't have Visa or Mastercard or whatever. It is hundreds times harder to get stuff you like. Therefore, many people want to hear at least one-two full songs in MP3 and they will buy album. They can't spend money on "unknown" things. Well, if they are Dream Theater fans, allright, it's obvious they'll buy the next album but what if they haven't heard Fates Warning or King Crimson or LTE or whatever? Sorry, but 30-sec spots, like on Amazon, or Musicblvbd ain't enough. Also, it's not just 15-20$. Would you spend 100$ for something you don't know what exactly is that music about? By the way, it's not my problem, just wanna tell you not to bitch at everybody who wants to hear some MP3's. I agree that artists deserve every dime they get. Except... hmmm, Backstreet Boys, N-Sync, Spice Girls, ... :-)))) Let Dream Theater surround you, Martin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Feb 1999 05:52:53 -0500 From: email_address_removed To: "INTERNET:email_address_removed" Subject: Re: Attention All Drummers Message-ID: Scott, Wrote > I prefer stereo headphones , but you may not want something that > big. Hats off to B.B. King, for best live blues performance - "Outside Help"! It gives me chills. Also what was that blues stuff from him on the Blues Brothes 200 soundtrack, awesome blues stuff!!! :) While the roots are really in those old blackmen simple blues songs, I happen to be more fond of "It's not my cross to bear", "Whipping Post", "Riviera Paradise", "I'm so glad" ... This is affordable > technology which exists today. A tad inconvenient if you happen to own more than one MP3 player - then you'd have to buy a copy of the file for home, a copy for the car, a copy for the office.... But, to run with that idea a little, how about this addition: Make it so if the file is copied, that encrypted information doesn't go with it. Then the devices are set up to only allow unencrypted files to be played 3 times, and then they are disabled. This would allow someone to make a copy for a friend, but still require the friend to buy a copy if he likes the song (Unless he wants to keep getting new copies of it. I'm sure some people would do that, but most would buy their own just for convenience sake). ___Pat Sullivan_______________ Email: email_address_removed ICQ: 23499229 AIM: TOWHTSTS WWW: http://home.ici.net/~psull/psull.html ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 26 Feb 1999 06:30:10 -0800 From: "Trevor W. That is physically impossible on a pc. Look, this whole idea will fail for the same reason copy protection failed. Every way (short of dongles, and those are far to expensive to use for distributing music) is easily broken (ie any dumb-ass kid can do it) and inconvient to the point of not being worth the trouble. -Andy Putman ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 4708 **************************
