Maybe I've been out in a Montana shack mailing unmarked packages for too long, but I haven't heard word one about this band. They were listed in Rolling Stone's (and we know how reliable they are) "The Ten Most Important Hard And Heavy Bands Right Now" and seem like they would appeal to people here based on their write-up (see below), yet I've never even heard their name. >>> Candiria Latest Projects: Beyond Reasonable Doubt Influences: Brutal Truth, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Voivod, Joe Henderson Shred Style: Progressive New York metal Lair: Brooklyn Hardness Scale: 6 Lyrics: The Deal: Mix a large dose of jagged speed-riffing with electric-piano jazz; add esperimental electronic jams and hip-hop. Candiria's accomplishment is impressive: competance, at least, in every direction they attempt and total disregard for the boundaries of metal's subgenres. Still, those into progressive metal will approach it first; jazzheads second. >>> Other 9 most important hard and heavy bands right now? KORN (bleh), Meshuggah, Pantera (see KORN), Queens of the Stone Age (??), Soulfly, Metallica (duh), Black Sabbath (see Metallica), Soilent Green, and Morbid Angel. No Dream Theater, but I wouldn't expect that. Just seems funny that they'd cite several relatively unknown bands over established trendsetters like DT, who pretty much made the progmetal scene (or, at least, revitalized it), and others (Megadeth?). Let me repeat, this is Rolling Stone here, not a good or worthwhile magazine... One more thing, non-metal related. I just sent off for my Nearfest tickets today. As you all no doubt know, IQ will be playing said festival. I'm looking to get a number of their albums so as to familiarize myself with the music before the event. Problem is their stuff's friggin' expensive for us Americans. What's the 'best' (i.e. cheapest) place to get IQ albums? The problem with a band like IQ is that they're not popular enough to be carried at decent prices by the big name vendors (CDNow, et al), but they're not small enough for the run-out-of-the-basement vendors to carry. Suggestions are much appreciated. That is all. Brian =================================== Name: W. Brian Henderson, Esq. It's a priveledge to have Mike Portnoy reading this list on a regular basis, contributing actively to discussions, giving us all Christmas CD's every year, arranging special Fan Club gigs, producing bamnd videos, requesting double CD's, and all that wonderful stuff he does. But guys, HE'S NOT A VENDING MACHINE. I tire of seeing everyone and his brother on the 'jam asking Mike for both versions of Met. 2 to be released, for Raise The Knife to be included on the next album after he's specifically said that all FII demos will be canned, asking for a studio double CD, and all the other things that have been flying around here. I think we all need to remember that we're FANS, not EMPLOYERS. Asking for the guys to do everything that we want under the Sun is a bit ridiculous. Petitioning to bring back the old font is totally frivolous, and everything else that has gone on like that is the same way. I'm sorry for taking up the bandwidth, I just know that if I was in Mike's position, I would get awfully sick of hearing the "fans" gripe and bitch about what I *HAVEN'T* done for them when I would have already done so much. Ofcourse, we would compare the two versions like we do >everything else, but since it is going to be so different, it is almost 2 >different songs with a few common themes. A sequel to a sequel. How about >it in MP3 format? See, I had the opposite reaction (altough I'm not quite sure why I did). I thought it was cool that this time (comparing to ACoS) there would be only one version, despite the fact that it was rewritten with a new keyboardist. That way we *wouldn't* be arguing over which version was better (not that this is such a horrible thing), and we could appreciate MetII for the single piece that it is. Sometimes I'm annoyed that I have two versions of ACoS because there are things I like in each one, but I can't have it all in one package. Yet, I must say, there are sometimes when I think it's pretty cool to have the original (but that's partly because I like Kevin's key parts better in the original, but overall I prefer the way the final product came out). I dunno. I must say, though, that I'm pretty psyched about the prospect of a MetII with Jordan playing keys. This isn't a rip on Derek. I think he did a fantastic job while he was with DT--I think he contributed great stuff both musically and personality-wise. However, I'm simply of the opinion that in terms of music writing, Jordan and Kevin do it better, and that given the choice, I'd rather listen to what they write and play for DT. I feel a little bad for Derek though. We've been informed (here on the 'jam) that MetII has already been recorded. I can totally understand making a clean break and starting fresh with Jordan, and I'm (as I mentioned) very happy that they'll re-record it with him, but it does seem a little like a slap in the face to Derek. I imagine he'll understand (if he even pays any attention) the desire for an album with the coherency of all five band members being the same (can you imagine having 45 minutes of Jordan-with-DT material, and c.30 minutes of Derek-with-DT stuff in Metrop? It could be a jarring discrepency), but it still sucks a little. I mean, with Kevin leaving they *had* to record ACoS with Derek because (as I understand it) it wasn't recorded yet, just written. Just MO. The only real disappointing thing to me about the whole starting fresh thing is that I really wanted "Raise the Knife" to be on the next album. Now I've only heard it while awaiting DT's arrival to the stage before a couple shows, but it sounded pretty cool, and Myung wrote the lyrics (according to the list of written songs that DT put up during the FII sessions), and we all know how good LtL and ToT are (maybe RtK should have been called 'Raise the Razor' or something...RtR?). Alas. ------------------- Thanx, all, for all the discussion about mp3s. I know very little about software other than Winamp, and I'm interested in making some from my music collection to put on my computer, and maybe to put on some CDRs. I'm eager to hear more of the discussion. After going to the Empeg-car site, I've become really excited about mp3s. I went to mp3.com (which wasn't quite as helpful as I had expected) and I updated my 1.55 version of Winamp to 2.09.
