While digging through my CD collection last night, i came across a promotional compilation disc put out by the College Music Journal in 1988 (called "Moshin' CMJ"). The last track on the disc is "Only A Matter Of Time" by Majesty. Would this be considered any kind of rare or obscure recording, or is it more common or easy to find than i'd guessed? [Whoa, kinda like diggin' the lint out of your navel, and finding an M&M, wooooohoooooo!!!] To quote from the liner notes(if your interested): "Anyone who fears for the future of progressive rock will find endless solace in the music of the perfectly-named Majesty. ... Obviously a band who has their chops down, Majesty's complex arrangements and stellar virtuosity pertain to -- but often transcend -- the Hard Rock genre." On another note: As i was listening to OIALT, i was thinking about how "Take Away My Pain" would have sounded more powerful without the keys. Maybe even without the drums, too (sorry MP -- but maybe you could use the break ;-). i think, especially live, that could have been a real moving rendition of the song with just the acoustic guitar and sax. Just an idea, anybody else think so? (just a critique/observation -- not intended to start an argument) ttfn CHRIS =========================================== A Moose once bit my sister... =========================================== ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 10:10:41 -0500 From: Carlos Alfaro To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: A Message from Derek Sherinian (fwd) Message-ID: Computer Jim DTFOTL wrote: > > My solo instrumental album, "PLANET X", will be released by summer > > on > > > Magna Carta Records. Most solo albums do feature other musicians other than the artist making it. The only examples i can think of right now are when some of the guys from GnR made solo records (slash ,duff and izzy?) they all had other musicians.. i mean.. if youre a guitar player and do a solo album...youre not going to just do an album of guitar tracks..and maybe put a drum machine there ... IMO its even wierder that JLbrie's project is called his solo album..when its been said most of the music is going to be written by keneally(sp?) and james isnt going to play any of it. (for the sake of argument, not considering his throat as an instrument) . My point is that if you check out most solo albums DO contain other musicians. -- "[...] people will cringe..." - John Petrucci In the stream of consciousness. There is a river crying Living comes much easier Once we admit , We're dying. And not just Carpe Diem which is obvious. Do DT > Lie? Coincidentally.. the only sections on ACOS which the low B string is used are the intro pattern and that could be a detuned acoustic, when that breaks..with the heavy part., and and when they sort of repeat that right before going to the crimson sunset (see OIal) ..apart from that..i can only think of that down slide JP does during the middle section (darkest of winters) which he now plays with a 6 string ( because they play scarred/darkest/ytsejam as a whole.. the whole point is.. the only parts the 7 string is used.. are the ones that were totally different and i dont mean transposed..i mean different..from the album version. And even if they werent 7 strings by '89 , im pretty sure pitch shifters and detuned guitars were a fairly used practice..which JP couldve used if he so desired... -- "[...] people will cringe..." - John Petrucci In the stream of consciousness. There is a river crying Living comes much easier Once we admit , We're dying. Message-ID: Well, this isn't about Derek/Jordan, just so we're clear... I was watching 5YiaL last night, 'cause I calibrated my TV with video essentials, and I'm watching everything again. Anyway, I noticed that on Derek's Trinity (during the Rotterdam show) there is some stuff written on masking tape stuck on to the right of the LCD display. You can see it pretty clearly during "To Live Forever" right as JP goes into his musical interlude in the song. The camera shows a close-up of Sherinian's hand and you can see the tape on the the Trinity. I can tell it's not a set list, the stuff looks too small to be titles. So does anyone know what that is he's got written? Is it a keyboardist thing? I know it's not really that important, but it's been bugging me and I'm curious. As for JP being "withdrawn and introverted" (at least he's not infectiously perverted ;)), having met him twice, I can't agree. Maybe he was just tired or something when you talked to him, but he's been agreeable to me. Signed my stuff, listed to me without rolling his eyes, was pretty generally decent. About the one consistent thing I have noticed from person to person is that John never seems to think he did a very good job at the show. After racing down to see DT in Detroit because my friend's whore of a professor made him take a test that afternoon, we arrived late and ran into the band outside by the bus. Having John (and the rest of the troupe) sign my unused ticket, I told him it was 'cause I had missed the show. His reply: "That's OK. We sucked anyway." Always cheerful, that Petrucci. Well, I'd like to see DT in a show when John _didn't_ think he sucked. The place'd be on fire. Thus ends my rant. No top ten lists or one-liners... well... "Horse walks into a bar. With "solo albums" the person who's project it is has total artistic control of it (for it's *their* album!) and that's more or less what Derek means by it. The only people I can think of (off-hand) who have recorded a COMPLETLY solo album are Steve Winwood (who did 2 albums like that) and Bob Mould (who did his post-Sugar album like that). - mike. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= erotomania! - http://www.erotomania.org -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 11:07:27 -0500 From: Joshua Rasiel To: email_address_removed Subject: Bowery Recording Message-ID: >Just wanted to announce to the list that I got my hands on a very >good quality recording of LTE's concert in NYC at the Bowery Ballroom.
