Bafu gets the EOJ again (how *does* he do that?)..... >If anyone agrees with me that Petrucci seems to tolerate more than appreciate, >feel free to post about all the times Petrucci signed something or answered >your questions without ever looking up at you. /me raises his hand. "Yo." Petrucci signed my ACOS liner after the show when I last saw DT, but he did it while walking toward the exit and trying to move through the crowd of fans; I barely got the chance to tell him how much I enjoyed the show. His response was a flat "Thanks". I got the distinct impression that he would rather have been somewhere else. >If a famous musician doesn't >enjoy the signage or fan interaction he experiences after a show, then that >interaction becomes like a DUTY, like something he feels HAS to be done >instead of something he WANTS to be doing. People who notice this feel like >speed-bumps in his path, myself included. My sentiments exactly. When I meet the bands I listen to, I seldom have questions (stupid or otherwise) for them -- I generally just want to tell them how much I like their music, how much the show rocked, and how appreciative I am that they took the time out to come play near me. Personally I'm just glad to get the chance to meet them at all. Petrucci can do whatever the fuck he pleases as long as he keeps writing and playing that great music, as far as I'm concerned -- I don't have to like a band member as a person in order to love the music he/she puts out. ta, Phil ========================================================= Phil Carter -- email_address_removed http://www.mindspring.com/~philcarter "Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." -- Berthold Auerbach ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 17:26:10 -0500 From: Phil Carter To: A Pleasant Shade of Ytse Subject: Re: Murphy and Kuprij Message-ID: Greetings ye 'jamanoids... Heavier? That means you'd want to try "Awaken the Guardian" or "No Exit". One has John Arch singing, and the other has Ray Alder. John Arch is very unique, and many people really like him. Both of these are guitar albums, and there is no keyboard player in the band. Of course, A Pleasant Shade of Grey is considered their best work now, but it's very mellow for the most part... my $.01, BH _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Message-ID: Hey everyone... Just wanted to announce to the list that I got my hands on a very good quality recording of LTE's concert in NYC at the Bowery Ballroom. I am offering copies of the whole performance for the night. It is a 2 CD set with cases, covers, and inserts for $25 (or trade). It runs approximately 90 min, and the quality of the recording is very good. (though not digital or directly from the sound board) If you don't believe me, check out this 2 minute sample from Kindred Spirits at http://www.nyct.net/~mikeh/kindredspiritsclip.mp3 . (sorry, NYCT.net doesn't have their mime types set up apparantly, so you'll have to shift-click it if you are using a browser) I'm willing to distribute it, BUT I have nowhere near the equipment needed to mass produce CDs.. So, I'm just warning that there will be a waiting list, and it may very well be a big one. Trade, Cash, Or Money Order Only.. Email me back privately OR go to the following web page for more info: http://www.ageofvalor.com/~mike/lte/ Enjoy... Disc 1 is APSOG done live No NO No! C'mon, he needs to hear the studio versions of "The Ivory Gate of Dreams" and "APSoG" first. Think about it. I'm sure he'll like No Exit. If he buys the studio versions of APSog & No Exit, I'm sure if he likes them, he'll buy Still Life. I just think 99% of live discs are a bad place to start out familiarizing yourself with a band. IMHO. To many little nuances that make the studio recording so moody can't be reproduced live. That goes for any band that has any background detail. Even Queensryche's "Operation Livecrime" lost a lot of the emotion live. It can't be avoided. This has nothing to do with the musicians, it's the little subtle trinkets that the recording engineer & producer insert later that can make or break a recording. These things can have a big impact on a first time listener. >Could be my favorite progmetal CD ever. Added sound effects and everything. Sure they did. But not at the same subtle levels. The sound effects were slammed into the sound board and PA system at 10 times the amplitude of the original recording. So much for nuances. I'm not trying to be a dick, I'm just one of those people that listen to the texture of a recording and overall presentation. I think there is sheer genius in those two recordings that can't be reproduced live. That my opinion anyway. P.S. I think he'd love the APSoG live video. I've hooked several newbies with that. -- Al - The Ytse-ProGtologist ^ Switchcraft Microsystems ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "It's supposed to pack an awesome buzz" --Butthead ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 29 Jan 1999 01:55:24 -0800 From: "Trevor W. In the liner notes to ACoS, it says that ACoS was written in '89 with Met1. Okay, but I thought that Ibanez and Vai didn't come up with a commercially available 7-string until '91? I know ACoS was re-worked, but you just couldn't rework it that much. I've tried, in Em and Bm on a 6-string, and it just sounds a) wrong and b) shit (maybe it's the way I play it). And not just Carpe Diem which is obvious. Do DT Lie? 2) Tori Amos' latest album is prog. What happenned? Am I going insane? Is the world going to end? Incidentally, try jamming over that album. 7-string players, you is going to have yousselves a FIELD DAY (while TA'd have a FIT if she heard the results). Okay, who's for JP and MP guesting on her next album?? 3) Speaking of which, does anyone have/know where I can get hold of a copy (well, okay, boot) of DT doing TA's "Winter" at the Uncovered show? I want to hear this SO MUCH, and no, I can't handle Mp3s. I think. Private E-snail appreciated. 4) Are there ANY people on this list from the UK? Anyone at all?? Does no-one in this country have any musical taste at all??? I mean, even the rock magazines hate DT. Ban K! Shit, sometimes I hate being a Brit. Having said that, DT come here all the time though, which makes up for it... Si p.s. Buffy kicks arse. So there. ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 4632 **************************
