My guess would be that they weren't basing upon whether he played something new or not, but more about the overall "Jordan experience". Or maybe they hadn't heard the RPM tune? :))) Having heard most of the MP3s I'm kinda glad in a way that there wasn't TOO much new stuff played there. Just enough to whet the appetite but not too much that by the time LTE 2 comes out, we'd be going "I was expecting something new" :))) After listening to "Another Dimension" a good 10 times, I have some thoughts on Jordan: I've seen Jordan twice with Rod Morgenstein in clinic mode, have RPM and LTE discage, and have heard the TTT and Lie mp3s; but the sounds he making there around 1:38 (it's also repeated toward the end of the song), are a side of Jordan I had never heard before. He got kinda lets his hair down there a little. I never had any doubts that Jordan could play make any type of sound texture he wants to come out of that Kurzweil. It's just a patch :))) This part made me immediately rewind it before hearing the rest of the song. He's quite clearly not only a class act and a team player, but a boundary explorer as well. He's able to step into a situation (winger, rpm, lte, dt live, classical concerto performance, whatever) and just runs with it. No ego there, just play. Jordan's barely scratched the surface and DT is just another new direction for him to explore. The mind reels in anticipation of the what DT will come up with next.... Also, the rhythm and chunk on the intro after JP and MP join in with Tony, has a "Just Let Me Breathe" feel to it with a sprinkle of Necronomicon. Maybe it's the way Mike's hitting that cymbal and the snare work. I just really like that underlying rhythm and what he's doing with it. If this is _one_ of the stops the DT bus is making, sign me up for a ticket... Oh yeah, one more thing about the Kevin/Derek/Jordan thing: I heard the Precious Things version of 6:00 for the first time yesterday. And I must say that during the part where James is singing "Inside....coming outside" that John Myung simply leaves the planet!!! :P I do like the keyboard SOUNDS on that version. I guess I can understand a little more where some the "Kevin camp" might be coming from. Maybe it not about who is better as a player, but the actual sounds in a giving section. I've heard Derek play it just as true to the original intention of the song, but use different textures of sounds at different points. I imagine Jordan will (if he already has, please someone point me to a sample of it) also play it well, and throw his slant onto it... Well, personality types is an interesting subject. I don't know if anyone out there is familiar with the Myers/Briggs Personality Type indicator, but it does have an interesting breakdown between introverts and extroverts. ]From what you and others have described, it is obvious that Petrucci and Myung are "introverts" and that Portnoy is an "extrovert". These categories are not meant to be good or bad, they're just a description of someone's personality. Introverts - They can be outgoing AT TIMES. Many people who are introverts refuse to be labeled this because there is some negative connotation. But this is just the definition used by the MBPTI. This doesn't mean that they live in cave. In general, it means that they're outgoing when THEY are in the mood to communicate with others, especially strangers. In general, dealing with others, especially strangers, is work; it's draining to them. When an introvert is in a position for some reason where lot's of people WANT to communicate with them, they can come off as aloof, arrogant, hostile, or uncaring. Most introverts are lucky enough that they don't have people "after" them. Extroverts - Are almost always outgoing. They thrive on communicating with people, even strangers. They get energized by it. It's not work to them, it's fun. It helps to keep this in mind if you ever deal with anyone who is a "celebrity" for any reason. Or it can help you to deal with any introverts, even if you just work with them. Remember, if someone walks past you and doesn't say anything, it may just mean they're an introvert. It doesn't mean they're hostile or don't like you... my $.02, BH P.S. With all the talk about Derek being "on" and "off", it's a distinct possibility that he is also an introvert, despite his flamboyance. _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? It seems there were close to twenty people (maybe more) at TLA from this mailing list, and I was only aware of about eight or nine. That stinks. If security would stop tossing people out right after the encore songs, people from mailing lists could probably meet up in front of the stage and say "Hey! I know you! You're that guy! That guy with the long .sig file at the end of your posts! Etc.! Etc.!" Alas, at TLA the ushers were pretty barbaric and loud about everyone hanging around like fans of the band or music-lovers or something. Then once we were all outside the police came by, and were pretty barbaric and loud about non-police standing on the sidewalk, which I guess is a crime in Philadelphia. It turns out that the lone man outside TLA who challenged the police with a powerful dose of Anti-Police Magic (also called "logic" outside Philadelphia) is on this list. >< Yeah i was there. i saw that guy threatened but i did have to go, so i didn't get to see what happened. but the police in philly are anal. they worry about riots starting. cuz only the PPD are allowed to beat homeless people and loot stores. >< Vitalij Kuprij - High Definition: If looking for some EXCELLENT instrumental, look no further than Vitalij Kuprij's work. The guy is incredible. The music is 100% pure keyboard/guitar orgasm (lots of solos and then some), not to mention that the songs are good too as long as you happen to like prog (now where did I get that idea?) Every keyboardist who doesn't have his cds has missed a LOT. This is the guy we'll surely hear a lot about in the future. Available at least from CDNow and Shrapnel ('High Definition' also from Kane in Finland). If this caught your attention, you might be interested in Greg Howe's "Ascend" (www.greghowe.com), axecellent guitar work w/ Kuprij on keys. As far as I know, the CD is only available through the website (unfortunately). P.S. I hope you have a fireproof suit. Since I've stayed out of it until now, I'll throw in on the Derek / Jordan debate: I was never much of a Derek fan - nothing personal, just don't like his style. I am a Rudess fan, and he WAS the guy they originally wanted. Much as people mike hate to admit it, it's really MP, JP, and JM's band, and they have to make what they think are the best moves possible. That doesn't mean WE have to like it, just that they do. Of course, I happen to like this one... :) Mike Division ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 Jan 1999 15:50:55 -0500 (EST) From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: A Message from Derek Sherinian (fwd) Message-ID: I thought I would forward this in case anyone is interested. Just so you know, I'm not totally virgin to Fates. I have _Inside Out_ and IN MY OPINION thought it spewed ass-vapor all over my speakers. Any recommendations as to any *HEAVIER* stuff that they have put out?????<<< Well, now. The Ambassador steps up to the plate. I don't like Arch-era as much as Alder-era, but if you want heavy, "No Exit" will do the trick. "Perfect Symmetry" is also really good. Not quite as heavy, but proggier. And Zonder was in the band then. If you don't likr "Inside Out", you probably won't like "Parallels" either. More mainstream (but even Fates themselves don't really like Inside Out). But give it SOME credit, Monument rocks (tho I could survive without the spanish guitar stuff). The most popular is "A Pleasant Shade Of Gray". You're bound to hear that one mentioned a LOT here. It is a 55-minute song, divided into 12 parts. To me, it IS the essence of prog-metal, but not so prog it's underground. IMO this is better than anything even the Almighty Dream Theater has ever done. (My fave DT is ACOS). Totally awesome. But the FIRST thing I think you should get is "Still Life". Disc 1 is APSOG done live in entirety, and it's BETTER than the studio version!!! Could be my favorite progmetal CD ever. Added sound effects and everything. The second CD has stuff spanning more of their career. When you get it (just supposing you do), e-mail the jam and I'll tell you what's from what if you need to know. There is also a compillation called "Chasing Time" which covers everything up to 1995 (Monument is the only track from IO). So there you go. But you absolutely HAVE to hear APSOG.
