Go there and check them out. Glenn and I made the one crowd shot from the end of the show. Glenn has the Metal Tunes shirt on, with arms outstretched, and I'm right behind him in the denim shirt, mouth wide open in mid scream. It's very cool. /me wants more LTE. What follows is my opinion to throw in a little diversion to the "I love Derek/I hate Derek/You're an a-hole" thing. I guess that it's at least DTC ....... be careful what you ask for ....... XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX First off, I love "Behind". Different moods and very heavy sounds, mostly progressive. I have had it for a long time having bought it right when Basmer made some available to the Ytsejam. Like some others, on the first listen of Younique, I was kind of disappointed. It was *too* different. It didn't sound like Superior anymore. Too bad, I said. How wrong I was. Younique simply takes more than a couple of listens to appreciate. And most things in life that are meaningful in the long run usually take a while to appreciate. Sadly in this day and age many people are only seeking that instant gratification thing. Sure, there are the backup female singers on one song and a jazzy and funky passage here and there but on the whole, it's still Superior. The unmistakable guitar sound is still there (but sounds fuller/heavier than on Behind). And the odd thing is that over time, Younique doesn't sound that different from Behind. Favorite songs for me are God's Funeral, Nothing and Detect: Myself. Maybe not coincidentally, these are the longer songs of the disk which I tend to prefer. God's Funeral mixes the different textures well to highlight the heavy passages. Nothing is a little more introspective musically and emphasizes the keyboards. But even the 3:35 opener of Not With Me is a really cool quick kick in the ass. If you liked Behind and can afford to give this a few listens, this CD is TOPS !! I am pretty sure that it is available at the usual set of import warehouses in the US. http://truemetal.org/superior/ Lastly, since I just *had* to get the Japanese version of Younique (which has a truly interesting and significantly rearranged acoustic version of "Why") I have the "domestic" version for sale to anyone who promises to give it at least three full listens. $10 postpaid in the US. And, if you give it a few listens, I guarantee that you will like it or your money back !!!!!! If you don't own this, you should, and this is a very good chance to. And if you don't like it, I'll double your money back...............................................not. But I do believe if given the proper chance, this one will be in your rotation for a long time to come. Mark pretty much described how I felt about it after the first listen. I think I even made an ass of myself by posting something to the effect of "What's all the fuss?" Needless to say, this is now one of my favorite CD's of all time. I love the different styles and twists and turns. It just rocks my world. OK, I'm done. Bernd, where's my check? :) And when can I see you live in the US? However, I hope to be back online within the next couple of weeks. I would be happy to re-adopt the FAQ, if you the jammers, and you Pat, think this would be in the best interest of the band. I know Pat personally and I know that he's a great guy. I hope this doesn't become a name-calling battle. However, I would like to see the best interests of Dream Theater addressed. Once, again, until I get back online, I am not able to read the jam, but a week or two from now, If you guys want me to take over the faq again, I will. Hopefully, this can spur some open and mature discussions. - D-Man (through Mojo's fingers) ************************************************************************* ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Jan 1999 17:09:41 -0500 (EST) From: Syrinx To: TEDESCO MATTHEW A Subject: Re: Gordian Knot? Especially, since I actually typed D-Man's response. I can not speak for Pat. I met him once, a long time ago at the YtseCon - LaGuardia, or whatever the hell it was (Ytsecon 3???). However, I have noticed that the FAQ is lacking some serious updating. Especially, in light of the recent changes to Dream Theater, we need someone that will dig out the appropriate facts from the rubble. If Pat is capable of doing that, I wouldn't know. I do know Chris Merlo is. I for one, think Chris Merlo is an excellent person to re-assume FAQ responsibility. If Pat is willing to step aside, Chris has my vote. Chris's FAQ style is used by other FAQ maintainers on the net. That's how good he was as FAQ Maintainter. Other people emulated his work. That shouldn't be taken lightly. As for Pat, let me say again, I don't know him. I have absolutely no intention of doing him a disservice. I am simply saying that the FAQ needs to be addressed more often. If Pat can't offer more attention than he already has, another person should come in to give the FAQ the service it requires. Let's remember that this FAQ isn't for the maintainers glory, but for Dream Theater's. (I sound like that wacko guy in Indiana Jones - Last Crusade) Anyway, there's my $51.50. -m o j o m a n ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Jan 1999 18:08:52 EST From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Light bulbs and such Message-ID: > Q: How many list subscribers does it take to change a light bulb? What is actually defined as >prog. rock?? There's a pretty decent book out called _The Progressive Rock Files_ by Jerry Lucky (published by Collector's Guide Publishing). Lucky is apparently a well-known radio personality and a major progressive rock fan. The book contains a free CD including what are apparently the first known recordings of Pink Floyd, from the film _Tonight Let's All Make Love In London_. Anyway, the book includes a definition of progressive rock provided by the author. Here it is, from the fourth edition (published last year) and (barely) edited by me: Progressive rock is music that incorporates: complex arrangements usually featuring intricate keyboard and guitar playing; songs predominantly on the longish side, but structured, rarely improvised; a mixture of loud passages, soft passages, and musical crescendos to add to the dynamics of the arrangements; the use of a mellotron or string synth to simulate an orchestra backing; the possible inclusion of live symphony orchestra backing; extended instrumental solos, perhaps involving some improvisation; the inclusion of musical styles from other than a rock format; a blending of acoustic, electric and electronic instruments where each plays a vital role in translating the emotion of compositions which typically contain more than one mood; multi-movement compositions that may or may not return to a musical theme--in some cases the end section may bear little resemblence to the first part of the song; and compositions created from unrelated parts, i.e. Genesis' "Supper's Ready." I certainly don't agree with all of it (the mellotron reference is obviously outdated), but I think it's reasonably accurate and definitely broad. As far as my ten favorite artists (subject to change, in no particular order after the first one or two, and arranged in a way that they are not a top-anything list): Rush, Queensryche, Kiss, Van Halen, Aerosmith, Queen, Genesis, Bruce Springsteen, and Led Zeppelin, plus the somewhat obscure band Phantom Blue that I've mentioned from time to time (as if anybody would remember). Some of these might change next week (or this week, for that matter). Led Zeppelin is currently occupying a spot normally held by the Beatles.
