Oh, and never try and use an FZ quote against me. I'll admit that anyone who writes the music that they enjoy deserves respect, regardless of the genera. BUT there is such a thing as one type of music being fundamentally _better_ than another. When you listen to the piano, you don't want to hear an E minor chord repeated for 175 measures, you want to hear the Moonlight Sonata. I theorize with relative certainty that there are twice as many fans of DT-like music in the world right now, they just don't realize it. They pass it off as being too cheesy or too old. _That_, my friend, is what I hope to eradicate. And it works in both directions, too. I used to hate anything associated with rap, then Anthrax blew that away. I used to hate anything that didn't have a guitar, then I heard Tori Amos. I used to like regular music, then I heard Frank Zappa (Jazz From Hell, learn it, live it, love it). The list goes on and on. Believe what you will, but a majority of people buy music not because they like it, but because they don't feel like thinking for themselves. Bands like N'Suck will always repulse me, but I suppose it would be hypocritical to say that they have no talent and then listen to my Offspring CD. Listen to what music that stirrs up emotion, music that makes you sad or angry or violent or peaceful, whatever you wish. I'll continue to listen to the music I like and try and get other people into it, and I'll also continue to listen to the music other people want me to hear. So what's the list's take on Meshuggah? I just downloaded a few sample MP3's of them and I won't pre-judge. The ones I have all use the guitar as a percussion instrument, but I'm sure the whole album(s) have to be listened to before I decide. I asked you if someone could make me some mp3's of the DT Xmas CD 98 because I couldn't get it myself,=20 Nobody wanted to do it. (some nice guy is sending me a tape though...) I found this strange, Untill I read all the Posts regarding this issue on the Dream Theater Newsgroup. This really opened my eyes. You should read the whole post (The "New DT Boot CD-R Site" thread, under the title "Why do we not copy Xmas CDs? Why does DT=20 make them? And more.") For all of you lazy people out there, I have put some of it in this post. But you really should read all of it at once! -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- = -- -- -- -- -- This post was written by Mike Bahr (most of us know who he is) to the DT Newsgroup ( alt.music.dream-theater ) on January 13. Anyway in 1996 we got the first Xmas CD, a surprise if there ever was one, and it was there and gone in a heartbeat. We were told that the band themselves had made all of them, from their own funds, and that it was just a free gift to those of us hardcore enough to be in the fanclub. Now, as you can imagine, this blew our fuckin' minds! We were on Cloud Nine. The band asked that it not be bootlegged around, and because we weren't so stupid as to want the fun to stop, we immediately agreed. We didn't know that two more (as of this date) of the Xmas CDs were coming... we just didn't want the band to regret having given us that special holiday treat.=20 And that's what it comes down to. Every year since then we've had a Xmas CD put out (of which 1998's is by far the best, I must say), and every year we don't copy it, because we're so happy to have it and we don't want DT thinking that we're getting to be unruly, ungrateful fanatics that they need to shut out of their lives. We want the party barge to keep on sailing, not to put too fine a point on it. Whether or not we ever get another Xmas CD, we just don't want to take this good thing that has come about, and ruin it. Is it so difficult, then, to see why we would abruptly and harshly shout down anyone who acts "against" our efforts, even unknowingly?=20 -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- = -- -- -- -- -- Mr. Bahr, Thanx for opening my eyes! : ) To those of you who already have read this post: I appologize for taking up so much space on the Jam! Well, it's not entirely a crazy thing to do, at least on a guitar. On bass, yeah, it's nuts unless you've got super-hard nails. But on guitar, especially nylon string guitar, it's fairly common to grow out the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingernails on the picking hand. Steel strings are tough on nails, but nylon ones generally aren't detrimental or hurtful, and you can get a lot more tone that way. -- Craig Griffith: High school student, guitar player, King of Craigland http://www.geocities.com/EnchantedForest/Dell/8509/ "I may make you feel, but I can't make you think" -Ian Anderson ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jan 1999 08:30:18 PST From: "Trent Thornton" To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: New genre name? I buy it. I'm a recent DT convert. I bought the 'A Change Of Seasons' CD for the Zeppelin covers and no other reason, but I listened to ACOS and was blown away. I don't own all their albums, but the music I have heard is brilliant. >Believe what you will, but a majority of people buy music not because >they like it, but because they don't feel like thinking for themselves. >Bands like N'Suck will always repulse me, The thing about pop music is that it will always be there. Not all bands can be revolutionary like Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, Floyd, etc. And the bands that are probably won't achieve just tons and tons of success during their lifetime. It sucks, but it's true. Pop music is made to appeal to the dumbass in all of us and the scary thing is that it works for so many people. Don't believe me? Country music as most people know it today has been nothing but PURE pop for the last few years. I respect old school country as a music form (and that's just my personal taste), but this new stuff repulses me. In short, we need bands like Hanson, Celine Dion and N'Sync b/c they do something that a lot of revolutionary bands can't do- sell records. but I suppose it would be >hypocritical to say that they have no talent and then listen to my >Offspring CD. Listen to what music that stirrs up emotion, music >that makes you sad or angry or violent or peaceful, whatever you wish. >I'll continue to listen to the music I like and try and get other people >into it, and I'll also continue to listen to the music other people want >me to hear. I don't support that, but my opinion matters about two shits to you I'm sure, so I won't let this get to me. It is possible to turn people on to your music (I've gotten my brother into No Doubt, Cream, Collective Soul, Rage Against The Machine and a lot of others) and vice versa (my brother got me into DMX, Busta Rhymes, Merle Haggard and a LOT of other music). Music is such a beautiful thing b/c it can evoke so many different kinds of emotions from a person. It doesn't matter if it's acoustic country or the hardest metal ever, if the music is good and is performed by someone who deeply cares about it, it will always make people sit down and think. That will never change. Err, guys, sorry to disapoint you, but most of the folks out there think that the revolution is happening right now!!! And they love it! It's the techno, rave, GOA trans 'n stuff music! They all claim this is refreshment and something new! Might be true, some of all this sound may bring somehting more to the future music styles! I don't like it too, but why someone saud that it won't last if it can't be performed by a band? I don't see the connection? It doesn't matter if the stage has the machine and singer, if folks enjoy it - that's it! Maybe the live music won't surpise you with medley stuff like Moby Dick, Freebird or Nightmare Cinema, but who cares! :) If the audience like the song, they're cool! > But like I said before, something like DT or Fates or Yes is never > going to be popular because it's too strange for the average person. That might be our curse, but weren't Yes recognized enough in their time? Maybe some older fan can tell this, I can't speak about it! They are legends, according all encyclopedias 'n everywhere so I guess that's it! No one HAS to appriciate every style of >music, and if you dont, its not a problem, its a matter of taste. There is no genre of music without some musicians of immense talent, and without some creative use of musical elements. Everything is subjective, so it is always a matter of taste, but if you dislike all country (Steve Morse plays country songs) and all Rap (Bela Fleck and the Flecktones have some rap... so does Thal) etc, then I'm far more inclined to think you're just really sadly closed minded than I am to believe that you've LISTENED and decided that it's not for you. I didn't say you have to like everyone. I didn't say you have to do anything. I simply said if you close the door on a genre of music, you're closing your mind. There is no way to argue anything other than that point of view... you're not listening if you close the door on a genre. >only have problems with 3 whole styles or music - rap/hiphop, country, and >reggae/ska.
