I'm just one of the few that will accept the fact that it will never change. Simply because it won't change doesn't mean I can't fight it, though. heheheh. Actually, I have no gripes about the actual media forms that DO possess musical content. The Divas aren't bad, the Spice Girls might have had a decent song or two... It's all of the crap that flows from behind the scenes that bugs me. Each era has had their share of groups that make it big because a bunch of chicks think they're all cute n' shit. N' Sync, Backstreet Boys, NKOTB, Menudo, The Jackson 5, Orville and Wilbur Wright, etc. I would prefer to base my personal success on my musical acheivements rather than how many months in a row I was profiled in Teen Beat Magazine. If the jeans are baggy, the clothes are Hilfiger, and the music has a hip hop flavor (or as they would say, flayva ;-) its not metal, its merely hip hop with guitars, and IMO, it sucks. Another "band" the media calls metal but isnt is Maralin Manson. Message-ID: Cowdude is having problems with his guitar. Yup, adjusting the tross rod is exactly what you need to do. See, humidity and air pressure not only get your guitar out of tune, but they also make the neck "move" - which means it can "straighten up" - move back - or "losen up" - move forward. Moving forward is what me and my friends know as skate-ramp effect :) It can get really bad on cheap guitars or in some of those Ibanez guitars that have necks thin as paper. If you don't want to adjust the tross rod just take it to a guitar shop, that's common procedure. Might cost you anywhere from 20 to 50 bux. It's not a big deal though, if you want to do it yourself, just losen up the strings, remove the tross rod cover (in your guitar it will be at the end of the fretboard with the tuners), get the right type of key (it should come with the guitar) and turn it clockwise to straighten up or counterclockwise to losen it up. Since your neck is straightened up more than it should, you want to losen it up. To know if it is at the correct point, verify your first and 6th strings - hold them pressed at the 12th fret and verify the hight at about the 5th fret. You should be able to slip a business card under the string at that point - you don't want the string to be touching the fretboard at all, that means the neck is too straight or maybe even bent to the wrong side (to the back). You don't want it too far off the neck either because it would mean your neck is too lose. I set up all my friends guitars and basses cuz I get a much nicer setup than any of the guitar stores around :) It's not rocket science at all, it just takes a bit of time and patience. A guy doing 20 guitars a day probably doesn't have much of either. Good luck. Don't blame me if you break it :) Christian. _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? What he is probably doing is plucking real close to the bridge which gives that short, snappy sound. Deftones are not ska at all. They are very heavy. They are almost Emo. And about the truss rod... I have a Jackson ps-4 too. it still buzzes and I've had it for 4 years. But one thing is to lower or raise the bridge. If you've already done that, then play with the truss rod. The on;y reason people say not to touch it is that if you turn it too much, you can snap the neck. You should never have to turn it more than a 1/4 turn. Look down the neck and make sure its straight. left-loose, right tight. they more loose the more it bends forward, the tighter the more it bends back. This whole deal pissed me off so much, I bought myself a new guitar, My Carvin DC127c with flame package, which i love to death. I will never need another guitar, except a 7-string, but if anyone hasn't tried a carvin, do it now!!!!! You won't regret it!! And particularly the bassists! I just wanted to jump in with a question what do you guys think about active basses? I am currently using an Ibanez Ergodyne bass and like it more than my good old Yamaha. Ibanez has got active pickups system, and I always thought that it gives more opportunities for wider sound variations - and the Ibanez proved this to me, but recently I hapenned to be playing at a studio where the sound engineer complained alot about active basses, and said that this was total crap, not worth buying at all... Other people simply prefer the sound of a pic to their fingers (i.e. Frankie Bello used a stainless steel pick on 'Got the Time' because he got that much more attack out of it than his fingers, which he normally uses). Others prefer to use a pick because it does a halfway decent job of muting an aggressive right-hand method - slapping the strings can create a nasty popping sound (i.e. Steve Harris). I actually got kicked out of a band because I had too much oomph in my right hand. Pretty cheap of those guys. You are by far my favorite jammer. And now on to rebuttal: >Hell, I think AnthraX was the first to jump at the idea. Bingo. Very true with this one, all the mixes they did on the Killer B's and a lot of other records were way ahead of their time. But Anthrax has never claimed to me mainstream, not even in their genre. >A record company seeking profit will NEVER allow this. Talent is to Radio >as Mogwais are to Midnight Snacks. These are the words of a truely war-hardened prog veteran. I couldn't agree more in some ways, but I think you have to expand your scope beyond the last ten to twenty years in order to truly analyze this. Radio stations and record companies play what the people demand (for the most part), and in the late 70's during the era of disco, producers realized that people don't like stuff that's too complicated for them to learn. People were drawn to mind-numbing beats and repetative styles that just looped over and over until the listener had to buy the album to get it out of their head. This gave rise to the dawn of pop music as we know it today, and began the slow but steady fall of the broader deffinition of Rock and Roll. Gone were the days of Woodstock and the music of the 60's that EVERYBODY liked, gone were the hay days of the metal godfathers like Led Zepplin and Rush (even though they were by no means out of the picture). Music started to change, and dispite the efforts of many talented bands and musicians of the 80's, they were overshadowed by the "Girls, Girls, Girls" bands, the hair bands etc.. The steady demand for non-talent music was on the rise, and it was only given a boost when grunge-rock hit the scene in the early 90's. Here were albums going double platinum with every song consisting of 3 power chords and whining vocals. Now today, we are faced with the demise of the bands of that era (Nirvana, Soundgarden, STP, etc.), with nothing to replace them but the ever growing popular lust for Rap, Pop, R&B, and other songs to have sex too. What's the point? Well, the point is that if you look back 30 years, it wasn't always this way. Record companies and the public at large didn't always shun a shredding guitar solo, or a maddening drum beat. The public used to like bands like (early) Yes and Genesis, or the guitar wonders like (Cream/Yardbirds) Clapton and Hendrix. Everything goes in cycles, and I think its time we rose back to the top. That's my take on my very very abbridged version of modern music history. Please correct or expand if needed.
