If a piece of music sounds faster right after you wake up, it's because of the speed of your body, not the cd, and I'm not kidding. I've noticed this for years. Once I tried to tape a song in the morning with a tape recorder, to PROVE to people that music is faster in the morning. I think I was eight years old. But when I played the tape back later in the day I found that the song had magically slowed back down to normal speed, and boy did that piss me off. That was when I realized that the source of the changing pace was not the song itself, but my body/mind. Starting a song right after awakening might sound strange or distorted to just about anyone, and I often find myself marvelling at how much faster songs sound when my alarm goes off in the morning and the radio blasts out a faster- than-normal tune. This is because of the state of my brain after waking up, not because the radio station has a pitch-increasing knob on their cd player. ;) The real challenge is trying to play along with "Take The Time" right after getting up. Petrucci tends to get faster while I'm sleeping, and boy does that piss me off... Full of Stars Event is: Dave DeLuco: Vocals Shaun Michaud: Guitars, Keyboards Jay Rigney: Bass Matt Scurfield: Drums Event is a very talented four-piece band from USA, influenced by Iron Maiden, Queensryche, Steve Vai, Dream Theater, Led Zeppelin, Yes, Rush and Billy Joel? and that about says all about their sound and music. Their music comes fairly close to their influences. Maybe you could ad a little bit of Emerson Lake and Palmer, Allan Holdsworth, Kansas, Stravinsky and UK together with some jazz-fusion to the description too. They might as well be the next big group beside those big names, even though they only been around since 1996. They started under the name Mystic Fishook, and the cover of this CD also says Mystic Fishook, with a sticker on it saying "Event Formerly Mystic Fishook". Nowadays the CD has been reissued with the same CD cover saying Event instead. The music is a combination between progressive metal and techno, with many technically demanding finesses. The techno side of it comes from the programmed keyboards. The guitar solo sections are very influenced by John Petrucci of Dream Theater. The singer is very skilled and he's singing is very passionate and heavy with a touch of Bruce Dickinson. They can be very happy with such a great singer. Overall the music contains very complex arrangements with many intricate rhythms. An explanation to this could be that the band was formed at Berklee Collage of music. But Events music is very melodic too, with some catchy choruses. Another amazing thing is the clearness of the production. The sound is very crisp with very detailed separation between the instruments. This is very advantageous to let the music come to its full rights. The best songs are "Electric Skies", "Muddy Water", "Aimless", "Tundra", "Weatherman" and "Full of Stars". Yeah, that's right! It's almost every track on this CD. Event is one of the better bands coming out of the 90:s; they have taken the progressive music a step forward. Get this CD as soon as possible. It can be ordered through their website at: www.mysticfishook.com Rumors are saying that they will be in the studio again at the beginning of 1999. Unfortunately the release won't be before 2000. -Reviewed by Greger Ronnqvist- Email: email_address_removed.se Snail Mail: Greger Ronnqvist Risselasvagen 66 B 833 35 Stromsund Sweden ICQ No: 17275819 ------------------------------------------------------------------ Join the Prog-Reviews Mailing List: http://www.onelist.com/subscribe.cgi/prog-reviews ------------------------------------------------------------------ Recommended links: Sonitus (http://www.apm.se/sonitus/) Tarkus (http://home.sol.no/~prognet/tarkus/) Wanted (http://members.xoom.com/moriensis/wanted/wanted.htm) Prog Net (http://www.prog.net/) Fun News (http://www.funnews.nu/) Zeitgeist (http://members.tripod.com/~zeitgeist_scot/) Stormbringer (http://www.intonet.co.uk/~derekdaniel/) Midwestern Skies (http://www.angelfire.com/ms/MidwesternSkies/progressive.html) Through Different Eyes (http://hem2.passagen.se/caxen/index.html) ------------------------------------------------------------------ ---- 99-01-04 01.37 ---- S=E4nt till --------------------------- -> ytsejam(a)ax.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 04 Jan 1999 12:00:38 +1100 From: Graham Boyle To: email_address_removed Subject: Sorry to clutter up Message-ID: Can Charlie F from London and Brent R from NSW please email me with your mailing addresses to I can get your cd's sent :) Thanks GaZ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Jan 1999 20:18:05 -0500 From: "Thomas Forcier" To: Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 4537 Message-ID: Hello, Brian said: >I'll be just plunking around trying to come up with >something, and realize that the last two or three notes >remind me of a familiar song so I'll sound it out, and >it's usually on pitch if it's one I've listened to closely >many times This has happened to me on two recent occasions. First, I had just got done watching Last of the Mohicans and spent about ten minutes trying to figure out one of the musical pieces from it without listening to the tape at the same time. But in my typical laziness, I gave up and went back to just practicing. Not ten minutes later, it just hit me how to play it in the middle of doing some modes. The second was just this past week. I was watching Buffy as I have ever-so-religiously since the first episode and heard that "love theme" that is played in the episodes with Angel. I love the melody but always forget to tape the show to get a recording. So I wait for the show to end and grab my axe, but before playing, I hum the entire melody to memorize it. I nailed it on the second try. (Of course not having a recording means I'm going on memory of the pitch of the melody) I've always found it so much more satisfying to "happen" upon the riffs to songs this way rather than sit down and transcribe the whole thing. I figured out Xanadu, Creeping Death, and Reckoning Day (among others) this way and its so cool to just find the riff without all that silly work (Yes, I am a lazy sonofabitch, which would explain why music is my HOBBY, not my life :P). And to all who have made the smallest complaint about the Holiday Shows, you are encouraging those of us who missed them to flame you to high heaven. Be warned. Later! Then once they came out it didn't really matter what they did! I would have enjoyed the show if I had stayed, but I was going to pass out by the time they started, and I'm a huge DT fan. I just think the show was not handled correctly at all. It seemed very self indulgent and uncompassionate to their fans. And that's my 2 cents. :)~ Mike ----Original Message Follows---- Date: Sun, 27 Dec 1998 19:41:41 -0800 (PST) Reply-To: email_address_removed ]From: email_address_removed To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: 12/26 Birch Hill Comments Hey... I attended last night's show at Birch Hill Night Club in Old Bridge, NJ, and I agree wholely with what Chris and Damon said about the crowd. the vast majority of the crowd was rude, unappreciative, and cranky, just like a bunch of 5 year olds whining because they didn't get their way. So DT didn't put on a "regular" show with Pull Me Under and the other harder hitting tunes. I think EVERYONE was well informed beforehand about the type of show they were playing; there was even a sign at the door that clearly said that it was a pseudo-unplugged show, that there would be clips from the video, and that they would NOT be playing PMU. If you weren't too busy making a fuss about the length of the video clips, you might have noticed that they played all the heavier DT staples in the video clips to tide over the older diehards, AS WELL AS several clips NOT included in the video (so to anyone who bitched because they could have watched it at home: you're wrong; shut up!). Think about it... the clips, albeit long, were better than watching the boring kaleidoscope computer animation, a sucky opening act, or even worse... footage from the latest Poison tour or... (shudder) Blind Melon! As for the infantile sit-down protest of the length of the video or the chanting of "bullshit"... anyone that took part in that inane action should be ashamed of themselves. I proudly stood among the sitters, and I was appalled that more people did not remain standing. DT took the time to get together and put a show on for a five lucky crowds, and this is how you receive them? There are thousands of fans around the world who would do anything for a chance to see them in the intimate setting they offered. I'd like to end this post on an upnote, so I would also like to say that the show was fantastic as usual, and it was a nice change of pace to see a show that was a little out of the ordinary. I just wish that other people could realize how lucky you are to have a band like Dream Theater who cares about the fans and will come out to play, even when the natives are wild... hell, if I were in a band, I'd just say the hell with it, and not play for the ungrateful crowd... but then again, maybe that is why I'm not in Dream Theater. That, and the fact that I can't play 'Flight Of The Bumblebee' on my guitar, let alone as fast and clean as John Petrucci does. All comments/criticisms welcome. Me, and my friend Doug. Just for fun, we bought those tapes you see advertised in Guitar World, just to see if they would work, and what do you know, it did! We now can "hear the colors". The tapes just teach you what to listen for, and once you can distinguish and memorize - BOOM - you have perfect pitch. Now, maybe perfect pitch is easier to get when you have a parent who has it (my mother does), but it IS possible to get perfect pitch after being born without it. And, yes, having that floating middle C is called relative pitch. Before, I could find pretty much any note by its relationship to the upper or lower notes of my vocal range. That's relative too.
