Chuck Schuldiner, the guitarist for Death, a band that has upheld the extreme metal tradition for 15 years: "I still listen to my wall of vinyl-Kiss, Iron Maiden. I tend to listen to more of the old than the new, but of course I keep up with the new. I heard the new Slayer and it sounded a little like Korn, which worried me a bit, but I'll probably pick it up and give it a chance...also, Symphony X-they're getting no acknowledgment at all, but they're a terrific band." I almost filled my Depends when I read that. :) Trevor ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Dec 1998 12:45:02 +0100 From: Rob en Ellen Meijer To: email_address_removed Subject: Christmas CD 98 Message-ID: <3688C0BD.20FB6665@dds.nl> Just received the Christmas CD, wow what a collection it is!!! Brings back the fabulous evening in Nighttown, Rotterdam, just listen to the tracks, maybe you will get the same feeling that we had that night. It was damn hot there, but DT gave us cold shivers with this great performance!!! Thanks to anyone involved with the Christmas CD, what a gift!! Thanks to DT, thanks for the wonderful music you gave us and hopefully will give us next year!! We hope that you in the States who can visit the After Christmas shows get the same kinda show we had in Rotterdam, it will be a great night! Shame on the pitiful people still walking around that do not understand... (see the reviews of 12/26/1998 show). Have a great 1999! Looking for YOU! We were down on the floor for a bit before the show, up in the bar near the stairs for the first half of the show, then with Skadz and crew for the second half. Apparently we were the only ones to spot the almighty Tempus... we gave him a ride back to the hotel at his request (so yell at him, not us! ;), then came back to the Electric Factory to see if we could find you and Scotty and hung out behind the venue with the other jammers, where I finally got to meet the rare and mythical being known as Hairball. We left shortly after the Boston crew... it was chilly and it'd been a really hectic week/end, so I was pretty wiped out. It was great to meet all y'all at those three shows... it was good to finally put faces to names that I've known for as long as four years now... The funniest part of the weekend was AFTER the New Haven show: we stopped at a 24 hr McDonalds on I-95 maybe fifteen minutes out of NH to get a drink... as we were about to leave, John Petrucci walks out of the bathroom. :) I was too amused. It was a great weekend... I'm looking forward to seeing some of you again sometime in the future. :) Jaime (that Dragon person) --------------------- http://home.interpath.net/jkimpton/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Dec 1998 09:00:19 PST From: "Schnipp -" To: email_address_removed Subject: birch hill Message-ID: well, first of all I never thought there would be a Steve Vai album with a parental advisory explicit lyrics sticker on it. Then it was really nice to meet all you guys, although I didn't get all the names. To the guy with the bandana, who also likes/or dislikes the teaser of A fortune in lies, I realized I dislike the LitS teaser way more, because that's one of my favs. Now regarding the show I'll post something controversial. This was definitely my least faorite DT experience, based on several factors. Now, we are thankful that they play during the holidays. Me that is. Nobody forces them, nobody forces me to go there. Unplugged. Athmospheric - fine by me. But - after waiting for 3 1/2 hours I got tired. One point of criticism is the video. They didn't have to show all of it. Where was the merch, where were DTIFC flyers? I was just too tired after standing so long to appreciate a quiet and slow set (besides, the keys were not loud enough IMO). I wouldn't dare generalize and say that I only like heavy stuff, but I didn't catch the spark. Now Chris and I had a great time laughing about JP and Eve and thought at many points"well,ok he can play'(although I tend to find his fast repatative chromatic (when he improvises) a little too simple. I don't need lydian either, it just sounds boring to me. Just bend a note instead. MOre moody. shut up. get out... ) and I was banging my head although d-man said before that that'd be a nono, but hey, they are still my fav band. I think I've written quite a load of shit now and eventually proven to write incongruent and totally out of context, but hey, I just outed myself to not being a Rush fan, not even being able to recognize the voice of whoever sings(neil?) and embarressing myself with wearing a Budwiser cap with stickers on it. What the hell do you expect. seb"the hat" ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Dec 1998 12:24:41 -0500 (EST) From: Syrinx To: Schnipp - Subject: Re: birch hill Message-ID: > tired. My friend and I were going to go last night, but I was stuck in Massachusett's until yesterday afternoon, and there would have been no way for me to get everything organized to make it there. Needless to say, I am very peeved that what would have been my first DT concert was one that I had to miss. I wonder when DT will be touring after this. How come there aren't any Albany shows? My friend lives in Bennington, VT (I'm from Springfield, across the state), and we figured there'd be at least one Albany holiday show, but there weren't any scheduled. What a bummer. Hey Mike - if you're reading this, I WILL make it there at one point, and I'm going to meet you and praise you five properly as a new fan should! ------------------------------------------- Andrew Coutermarsh email_address_removed http://oz.plymouth.edu/~a_couter/ ICQ: 2513441 ------------------------------------------- "In the New Year, hold your right hand out always in friendship, but never in want." -- Irish toast ------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Oct 1998 13:03:01 -0500 From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Toad's Place show (some SPOILERS) Message-ID: Well, *that* was an experience - and not just the drive. I'm still not quite coherent enough to do a full review, but here are some random musings. - The pre-show ytse-gathering was interesting, even though the mighty Skadz didn't get there until the rest of us were done eating. Oh, and then there was Madsman, who wasn't told by the waitress that his plate was hot until *after* he burned his hand on it. Much hilarity ensued, unless you are the aformentioned waitress (who will probably never look at a Majesty symbol the same again). And before anyone shows any sympathy for the waitress, trust me - she deserved whatever she got. Her motto: "Service with a smirk". - The venue: it was an 18-plus show, but rather than using wristbands, they actually netted off an area of the club for the under-21's. The end result was that if you weren't old enough to drink, you couldn't get up near the stage, or even out in front. Personally I think that sucks, even though I was not personally affected. - Cool moment: The bathrooms at Toad's are downstairs, and you have to go by the dressing room to get to it. We heard a huge cheer from the crowd on our way back, and someone says "What the hell are they cheering for? It's just a fucking movie!". We turn, and it's none other than Mike Portnoy, poking out of the dressing room. - The show: Let me tell you, it was great to finally here some of these DT rarities performed live. My faves: Eve, Where Are You Now (first time performed live), TWIUTB (*how* did this song not get onto FII??), Hey You, and Paradigm Shift - which closed out the show nicely on an upbeat. All in all, an excellent show - exactly what I've come to expect from these guys. As I siad (to myself) in the car on the drive down, there's not too many bands I'd drive that far to see, but with DT, it's pretty much a no-brainer that you'll get your money's worth. ___Pat Sullivan_______________ Email: email_address_removed ICQ: 23499229 WWW: http://www.just-like.nu ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Dec 1998 10:08:53 -0400 From: Jordi Gen?
