Satch's That's what I thought, too. Anyone who's seen him live have a comment on this? Phil? Flamenco guitars rule. I've only been given the opportunity to witness one such player in action: Virginia Luque. Holy shit. This chick shreds as fast as Petrucci without a pick. heheh. Any guitarists who have an opportunity to go see her play, I recommend do so even if you don't like classical/spanish guitar. I left the auditorium with soaked pants when she was done. I wish we got more acts like that around here. (starts harping about how much Craig Chaquico kicks ass) Chris! :) I still like the dude, though, even if most of his songs sound the same. :P -- KorgX3 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Nov 1998 12:07 -0700 (MST) From: Edwin Voras To: Ytsejam Subject: RE: Dixie Dregs Message-ID: <19981125191853.OTYW5890@localHost> "Robert O'Doherty" Wrote: >Hello People, > >What can anyone tell me about The Dixie Dregs? Actually back in the 70's J.R. did not play with them, it was T. Lavitz (who is a kick ass Keyboardist) J.R. has only played with them in the last few years, after some of them got back together. Actually their music covers many styles ie: Rock , Jazz, Country, Bluegrass and classical. Everything was written by Steve Morse the founder and guitarist. I haven't really listened to their newest stuff but had all their "old" stuff and it was awesome. Yes for the most part it was "tame" compared to LTE. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 25 Nov 1998 14:18:47 -0500 From: Phil Carter To: The Divine Wings of Ytse Subject: Re: Jazz and stuff Message-ID: Greetings ye 'jamanoids... I knew I shouldn't have tried to beat Madsman to this one. Hell, his *life* is studying jazz nowadays. :) Brace yourself: Most of what Jesse plays is pure fingers (no plectrum visible). I saw him from the front row for a two-hour show last month and can verify that it is almost 90% pickless. Re: the jazz thing: okay, so maybe it's not pure jazz, but it has jazzy elements. Rob, The Dregs RULE, and Rudess only played with them for the reunion tour, normally the duties were handled by T. Lavitz, Mark Parrish or Steve Davidowski. If you like LTE, you'll like The Dregs, all instrumental (except for 2 tracks on Industry Standard) Kick-ASS fusion of Rock, Bluegrass and Jazz. One of the greatest overlooked bands of the century, I'm glad that after 23 years of being a recorded musician that Steve Morse is finally getting some recognition, even if it IS as a member of Deep Purple..... I called Toad's Place and talked to some complete idiot, who had no idea that Thanksgiving was tomorrow, and was informed that DT tickets are going on sale on Friday. I know the box office opens at 11AM. Rod Morgenstein (drummer extraordinaire of the Dixie Dregs and the Rudess/Morgenstein Project) was the drummer for Winger. Winger. This I was not aware of. Perhaps, if we ask nicely, he and Rudess will cover "Seventeen" when they tour again. .. Listening to Different Stages...I finally realized that Geddy sings "in the fish-eye lens" in Limelight. I'd never looked at the lyrics in the liner notes, and always assumed (and wondered why) that he was singing "in the fish islands." On a similar note, I'd always assumed that James Labrie sang "I feel elated; I feel depressed; sex is death. Death is sex." in Voices. However, listening to OiaL has revealed the true lyrics to be "Aaah eeel eeeated, Aah eel essessed..." (My sense of humor is running rampant. Labrie is great, and I enjoy his performance on OiaL) .. The production team for the next Dream Theater album should include Butch Vig and Mr. Doctor... .. Appending my previous statement about Labrie. Also enjoy his between-song/introducing band member statements. "Mike Portnoy on Druuummmsss!!" .. Alex Lifeson's next "Victor" project will include Edwin (formerly from I Mother Earth) and Sarah Mclachlan. Perhaps it will get heavy airplay. All right, I'm done. And! I must second what you said. >Hedningarna rocks so much that it can't be described. I have to back up these statements (and like Raivo, I certainly never expected to see Hedningarna mentioned in this forum!). Earlier this year the progressive label ESD joined The Artist Shop. In the course of our discussions they said, "Oh, by the way, we've got these other two labels, Northside and Omnium, that we'd like you to check out. Omnium is world music and Northside is Scandinavian roots music." To be honest, those rather plain descriptions didn't excite me all that much. I mean, what does Scandinavian roots music conjure up for you? But I figured it couldn't hurt to give them a listen. So anyway, this batch of Northside promos they sent me had a couple CD's from Hedningarna, one of which is called "Tra," Swedish for "Wood." The booklet's cover has this picture of some old log with metal spikes coming out of it - a particularly nasty looking device! When I put the CD on, I could swear I'd been hit by a bolt of lightening! The music was definitely giving me a very strong command to TURN IT UP, which I did immediately! Let me tell you, folks, THIS AIN'T ABBA! More like Vikings if you ask me! While Hedningarna definitely have deep roots in Scandinavian folk music, that description falls so short. This is progressive as all hell and unlike anything I've ever heard before. And does it rock? There is real intense rocking going on here! On a level of pure emotional intensity, I would rank it up there with groups like DT, Yes, Led Zeppelin. You know how some music just takes control of your body and forces you to move? It could be to dance, to sing, or to pull out that old air guitar (or any other air instruments you've got hanging around). This album does that to me. I simply can't sit still while I'm playing it. This album has definitely ended up on my top ten for 1998! Even just talking about it here, I couldn't help but put in on again! Excuse me, but it's time for me to MOOOOOOVE! If anyone would like to check out a couple Hedningarna soundbites, I've got them up at . I had Zappa in mind when I wrote about jazz+prog+nineteenthtuplets but according to what I've heard of UK it serves the same purpose. Prog bands like KC have some of jazz influences and early Yes had VERY strong classical feel. Metallers have always ripped off classical and now along with Apocalyptica and Waltari's Death Metal Symphony (Yeah! Yeah! Die! Die!) it's even more obvious. Mixing up genres doesn't necessarily produce anything new. Usually if you think you've got a new idea that's "your thing" look around and you'll see that it's also many other bands' thing. Like science music is all about collective course of development. Add something from here and there, rip off that guy on the left, mix up some own ideas and voila. But if you don't figure it out someone else eventually will. >Oh yeah.. you might have heard of this band too.. they're kinda low key >but great prog all the same.. the name's DREAM THEATER, and all the >members excluding Kevin James LeBrie studdied at the Berklee School of >Music in Boston which is one of the most prestigious jazz schools in the >world. needless to say these guys have plenty of classical and jazz >oriented training.
