What is their music like? Helloween, Maiden, Angra, M@#$%^lica, Megadeth or something? I can find Nightfall here, and some other album (live in Tokyo), so what do you suggest to get first.... Maybe it is better with private mail...... BTW, is the band DJAM KARET popular there? it's a Indonesian idiom though.... I think I have some of Magma sound clips on my music page. You can download them from there. Or if you like to listen some more I can send you the MP3 files. As for Magma stuff I would recommend: start with - Magma live (easiest album to get into for a new listener) - Attahk (more rock but you will be exhausted to listen to the first song, I bet.) Attahk is a very good concept album and it has an interesting cover. - Mekan=EFk Destruct=EFw Kommand=F6h (more operatic) - Kohntarkosz (very jazzy with some tribute song to John Coltrane) Very good concept album. - 1.001 degree Centigrades (another good one) - Udu Wudu - Kobaia (2cds) (first album. Might be weird if you are not familiar with Kobaian language yet.) Whatever you do, please do not start with "Merci" album. Most of Magma albums are short (around 40-45 mins). If you like to hear more try Christian Vander's solo works and the Offering stuff. Magma is going to release a new album soon. Might be only for Japanese and =46rench releases. I think that it's nice to see these not-so-popular bands mentioned here in the 'Jam (in fact, I love obscure bands, just for the sake of discovering different gems that might, otherwise, remain unknown). Djam Karet is very interesting, IMO. The song "Lights Over Roswell" (from the album _The Devouring_) is beautiful and has some interesting guitar work, reminding me of the jazzier moments of Andy Latimer from Camel. Also the bass is very prominent on the mix and gives an interesting groove to the songs and much of the jazzy feel comes from this element. Recommended instrumental music. []s, Roger... P.S.: Some moments of the band are similar to Echosilence's works (BTW, thank you Raivo for letting us know about Echosilence). -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Rogerio Brito - email_address_removed.br - http://www.ime.usp.br/~rbrito Undergraduate Computer Science Student - "Windows? "PFM" is an old Italian band in the same era as "Area", "Le Orme", "Devil Doll", "Divae", etc. They all are traditional progressive rock in the 70's. Old style. Except Devil Doll which is gothic prog with scary vocals by Mister Doctor. I heard that most of old PFM albums were released in cd format now. I like old stuff under the name Premiata Forneria Marconi than PFM. There is a very interesting new Italian prog band. It's Deus Ex Machina. They combine prog rock and jazz together. You know, AE, I always like to read what you write, because you have similar tastes with me... :-) BTW, I almost mentioned Deus Ex Machina in my previous message, but they are heavier than what I'd call prog rock (what I know, at least)... Anyway, Deus Ex Machina's vocals are indeed very cool. In the same way that power metal singers sing. Perform a home lobotomy on your roomate. Wait a minute, based up his/her musical tastes, the lobotomy may have already been performed. Anyone in Western Mass or NW Connecticut want to form a band? :) REQUEST: As ridiculous as this is going to sound, I ask, as a favor, that no one post any Star Wars, Episode One content here in the jam. I have spent the last three years trying to ignore any and all information about this film and it gets pretty damn hard as the release date grows near. And yes, I plan on leaving the theater if a preview for it should come on. Previews and articles revealing too much have ruined movies for me in recent years. You may all mock me now. Oh, and as for the comment I made about the basswood guitars, the luthier showed me two other guitars with Floyds that had the EXACT same problem as mine, but were in far worse shape (one he even thought was irreparable, the wood had given so much that the trem post was resting against the pickguard). One of them was an RG570. And if you ask why would guitar makers choose basswood if its *too soft* for Floyds? Three reasons: 1) manufacturers have an allocation of types of wood they are allowed to use, so once their allocation is up for the year, no more guitars can be made with that wood, 2) basswood is a very resonant wood, 3) if your guitar does have this problem, what are you going to do when it breaks? That's right: buy another. I also resented the comment that implied I both abused and failed to properly care for my guitar. But then again, with all the silliness in the last few jams, who am I to resent anything? In that vein, I've recently found that reading Jams goes much quicker if I skip past posts, regardless of topic, by certain people that have a tendency toward needless verbosity. Does anyone else do that? Oh, wait. Besides PFM there are lots of progressive bands: 1) empty tremors - this band has produced an album (apokolokyntosys) and it's going to record their second work.I've seen them playing and I've been astonished by their big technic in playing their instruments.it is not a legend that they played the Ytse Jam when they were only 12 years-old (now they are 20 - 21 years old apart from the keyboarder who is a bit older) and now they play many other DT songs (some part of ACOS, learning to live, the killing hand, another day,...).in any case i think that their principal aim is to be known by their songs that are really well-done. 2) mystere de notre dame - really progressive and melodic.this is one of my favourite italian bands.fantastic players ,(listen at the drummer)they can be sometime very hard, sometimes soft by many changes during their songs. 3) evil wings - this band is going to record its third album that it is said to be sold in march '99. I've seen them playing in the keller pub in bergamo where there has been the DT party organized by the italian dreamers and i must say they are one of the best italian prog bands.A part from the beauty of their songs i've been astonished by the bassist who has been playing many songs in the last part of his instrument (from the 12th to the 24th taste) using very often tappig technique.Really awesome 4) eldritch - they' ve just produced their third album. i think that it is worse than the other, mey be too hard. anyway they are a really good band. 5) athena - with their second album - a new religion ? - i think they will have a great success not only in italy. furthemore many people know their singer, fabio lione, because he sings in another well known band:raphsody (that ane not prog!!! but melodic medieval epic power).if you can find their album, please listen at the track number 6 and tell me what it makes you remember (may be the beginning of a DT song ?....) If you know other italian prog band or you don't agree what i think about them make me heard your voice! ciao da MORENO ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 4446 **************************
