Keith's playing is sloppy. I know this may be due to his arm surgery, but hell, on Ho-down, he is horrific. This guy is my idol, and he just seems like he is losing it due to age, injyury, or maybe both. I don't remember him soundding like that live. could it be that another star is falling? First, Rush, then DT, :), then this? I mean, it's bad enough that Yes and Genesis are on that downward spiral, now all this? I hopeDT isn't heading down this trail. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 21:54:25 +0000 From: Cyberwolf To: email_address_removed Subject: Peart and Double Bass Message-ID: Actually, I cannot name a definitive example, but being a fairly big Rush, Peart, and Drum afficiando as I am, quote the wolf, he HAS definately used double bass (and the pedal) before... But because most of us today are used to this HUGE sound of POUNDING bass drums, I think his was much more subtle, much like his INSANE cymbal work, which also is another trademark of a certain Mr. Zonder. The little subtleties sometimes force us to miss was is actually there. So there. ANyhow, I'm not pertinent to a specific example right now, but I'd bet your first born on it. Later. Scott M. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 21:14:09 -0600 From: Jeff Perrot To: Ytsejammers Subject: St. Louis Portnoy Clinic Message-ID: Well, Mike told me I had to write this, so here it is, and I know you're reading Mike :) Anyway, the clinic was incredible. I'll just go over some brief details: Taking my seat, the first thing I noticed was some new music I hadn't heard before. It only took me 2 seconds to figure out "Hey, this is LTE2!" And sure enough, when Mike started, he said it was some stuff they taped for the second album. I just have to say that it's gonna be an awesome sequel! Every bit as good as the first.... Mike started out by playing a few short solos, and then he stopped to catch his breath and take a drink, saying that we should clap a lot because it gives him a lot of chances to drink. Needless to say, we applauded so much I think he got tired of drinking. :) He then explained his setup (he was using a borrowed set), and played some more. He played along to Paradigm Shift and Kindred Spirits. Next he explained some theory concepts ("mathematics" as he calls them), and gave some examples of odd time signatures. After that he played the middle section of Metropolis, and we hummed the non-drum parts. He ended it off with a Q&A session and then played Erotomania, which I guessed right away from his description of the time signatures. :) Well, this is getting long, so I'll wrap it up. I just want to say that Mike is the greatest drummer ever, both as a person and a musician. He allowed us to take pictures, videos, audio, whatever. They also sold his set when he was done, and I bought a 12" Sabian Splash and had him sign it. Really cool. :) I highly recommend you go and see him if you can, whether you're a drummer or not. You'll definitely get something out if it. Jeff Perrot P.S. I met a few people there, but no one from the list. I was the short guy wearing the Awake T-shirt and sitting in the 2nd row. Let me know if you saw me.... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Nov 1998 19:42:09 PST From: "Max Verran" To: email_address_removed Subject: Fates Warning Message-ID: Pat Sullivan chortled Slick Willie's Copenhagen snuff: >>>I always find it interesting that Fates Warning went from being a metal band with a prog singer (Arch era), to a prog band with a more metal singer (Alder).<<< Cool that this is mentioned. Steve has been replaced with Deen Castronovo who is drumming monster LOL! I guess they should just go as Bad English again. heheh. There's more original members of that band present than of Journey! Well, then again, Neil and Ross have been the only original members of Journey since Gregg Rollie left in what? 1980? Cut me some slack, I was still reading Golden Books [tm] and playing with my Computron at the time. :) Nevertheless, they continue to rock, if not soothe, my nadz. And I will also give a hats off to Steve Augerri. I have the Tall Stories CD he sings on and he's great. He doesn't have that wicked wart/mole/conjoined twin thing growing south of the mouth like Steve Perry had either. :) >While it is true that neither Steve nor Steve is in the band, I have Weird when you think about it. Two wrongs make a right so I guess two Steves make, um... a Steve. Kind of like Michael Keaton in Multiplicity or something. Now if we boot Steve Z. and Bafu Vai off the jam, maybe a cool Steve would actually show up! (Screw you guys I'm only kidding.) Our luck George Farber or that "RUSH IS FUCKING TRASH! I'D PUT IT IN A TRASH CAN!" guy would return or something. :P >I hope you know that almost every single Ibanez guitar is basswood. All Yup My RG is and I'm pretty sure my Washburn is, too. I never have a problem with the Floyd on either of them. I hadn't even played the Washburn for like 6 months or more and just did the other night. Even through all the climatic and seasonal changes it was still in perfect tune although it has Tenderflakycrispycrusty strings. If most guitar luthiers think that basswood sucks for Floyds then it would amaze me as to why the major guitar manufacturers use it so much. I'm sure there are cheaper woods (not woulds, damn homonyms) they could use. :) Maybe I can have a special order Balsa or maybe even a sheetrock guitar. Mmmmm... particle board... >Re: Arch vs. Alder. Thought this read Birch vs. Alder for a minute. C'mon guys, we're discussing wood here, not vocalists. Aldur is most definitely the wood of choice because it gives better sustain in the higher registers, better tone, and while it is often compared to certain other woods (the Geoffery Cedar, for example) it tends to age better and hold its polish longer. The Birch on the other hand is generally used in second rate instances and cheaper fabrications. While many luthiers use this type of wood, most actual guitar players tend to discard it as it has a tendency to warble and warp unexpectedly. However, a few guitarists swear by it, claiming it writes the best lyrics or something... AS far as the Geoffery Cedar goes, it seems the most use that wood gets anymore is the manufacturing of hope chests for pimple faced adolescent girls to throw their stinky panties in. I hope to see it become a luthiers wood of choice again someday. Therefore the only one they are competing with is themselves, not anyone else. That aside I will list my Favorite (note I did not say "best") drummers. This is in no particular order.
