What I do agree with you on is that James uses his voice like an instrument in an excellent way! He is great. I am a drummer myself, but that doesn't mean I just listen to Mike and his part of the songs. As a matter of fact, I think James is a bigger reason for me to buy DT than Mike. Message-ID: Hey all, With the recent bashing of Springsteen and Joel, I had to comment. I am a Rush fan, I used to be a Springsteen fan, and I have never liked Billy Joel. Let those be qualifiers for what comes below. Rush's music has been very influential to a select group of people. They have never been consistent critical successes and have never gained popular recognition. By the latter, I mean that while you can still hear Van Halen's Jump and Frampton's Show Me the Way on popular radio, you won't hear Rush. They do have a dedicated fan base that has insured their financial success along with sales over the years. The people who vote at the hall are not concerned with what fans think, they are concerned with what their colleagues think. These are people in the media. Springsteen has made some incredible music over the years (IMHO). His music is driven by thematic lyricism and angst of many different levels. Springsteen's hits (Born in the USA CD) are often his worst songs, as are his attempts to gain critical approval (Tom Joad CD). His best work was his most personal and "stripped down": Tunnel of Love, Nebraska, and Darkness on the Edge of Town come to mind. But Springsteen was a media darling for one huge reason: the people in the media thought themselves the equals, and often the superiors of Springsteen. Its much easier for the media folks to deify someone they view as less than them are because it makes THEM feel more important. Keep in mind that many critics are people who aspired to be what they criticize and failed. Joel... I can't understand the appreciation of the man or his music. His songs, though catchy, are annoying, are so repetitive (not just within a song: his own songs sound too much alike), and his lyrics lack real insight. And yes, I've heard back album stuff that was mentioned. Where Springsteen's music was very personal at times, Joel never seemed to really feel what he wrote was important; it was just an instrument to gain popularity. As for the fella who mentioned the influence of his piano playing, I'm glad he got you into the instrument, but you said yourself that he was an influence befoer you heard prog-metal. To me, You seemed to be saying that had you heard prog-metal first, Joel would not have impressed you, and I think that's true. There's my take... Like anyone got this far. :) Stodgers ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Nov 1998 20:16:16 -0800 From: "Jon Case" To: Subject: prog-metal vs. prog. Well, in my opinion, I can't really classify them as metal. I think Megadeth, Metallica, and Slayer are the real metal artists. If any band plays a ballad, how can they be metal? Geddy Lee is scalping tickets in front of the Hammersmith Odeon. Alex Lifeson is in a straight-jacket and being taken away by two policemen. (At least, it looks a helluva lot like Alex.) The tinkertoy appears all over the Hammersmith Odeon ... on the jackets, posters, Geddy's T-shirt... On the middle flap, you see the band saluting...not the crowd, but the tinkertoy! All three tour shots on the flaps are indeed "different stages" (different tours) On the front of the booklet insert, the guy at the bottom left has the tinkertoy shaved into his head. The guy to his right in the white shirt has a tinkertoy tattoo on his arm and on his shirt. The guy next to him has the tinkertoy on his jean shirt. And, the inside of the booklet has various memoribilia from "different stages" of Rush's career. Hugh always seems to pack 'em in there, eh comrades? -Bogie >Date: Fri, 13 Nov 98 12:23:25 -0800 >From: Andrew Embler >To: "A daily dose of Ytsejam..." >Subject: Re: Geddy Lee is a scalper? >Message-ID: > > >>Doesn't that scalper look a little bit like....Geddy Lee? OK, Metropolis was good, but LTL, TTT, PMU are generally disappointing in any version except the studio version. Hey -- they're REALLY tough songs to perform! > with this again...! The reason James is not "perfect" on OIAL is > because he doesn't get to redo things in the studio (note the "Santa > Claus" effect that Derek mentions on his web page when discussing Kiss > Alive III). OIAL is a fucking awsome live album, it captures DT live, It's a very good CD, but I think fucking awesome has to be left for Fates Warning's "Still Life". Don't get me wrong, I'm still a bigger fan of Dream Theater than any other band, but I'm becoming more of a Portnoy/Petrucci fan rather than a Dream Theater fan. LTE is GREAT! Their instrumentals are GREAT! Even Sherinian is making me forget Kevin Moore now, especially after his performance on Explorer's Club. Way to go Derek!! Anyway, back to "still life". I have to admit, Ray Alder SETS THE PRECEDENT for live vocal performances on A pleasant shade of gray, live. He has developed his voice SO WELL since NO EXIT (which I couldn't stand and had to give it away). For anyone who wants to hear a superior prog-rock performance, please listen to A Pleasant Shade of Gray on "Still Life". > er...not in the studio. This band has the best vocals and instrumentals next to Images and > Words, IMO. OK. First of all, you're entitled to your opinion, and I respect that. Personally though, I'm rather happy with James' performance on OiaL. The thing that gets me, is that you say James' pronounciation is bad...... but you think the LV singer has good pronounciation? I think LV is pretty cool, and the music is very good - but it's the single worst pronounciation on a CD that I've EVER heard, IMO. I LITERALLY (not being a smartass here.... this is the truth) listened to the whole "Insights" CD once through without realizing it was in English. Seriously, I thought the CD was in a different language. Fortunately, I looked in the liner notes, and saw English lyrics listed, so I listened VERY CLOSELY the second time through, and I was able to make out a whopping 5 or 10 words through the whole CD. It's great - I never actually made the connection to ChromaKey, but it sure does sound like it. It's Jon Crosby (and only Jon Crosby) playing every single instrument on the album (and vox) except drums, which are sometimes programmed and sometimes played by a real guy, whose name escapes me right now. Anyway, it's basically a cross between CK and NIN, with a symphony, world beats, and Gregorian chant all over the disc.
