Although I am somewhat biased on this subject (being a drummer), just look at what Mike Mangini does on Fire Garden. Too bad he didn't have Gregg Bissonnette (are all the consonants in his name doubled except the B?) this time. Jeff Campitelli has good time but no feel, ya know? > Good call! I've been trying to figure out how to say that for a long time (ever since the '97 G3 tour), and you took the unformed words right off the tip of my tongue. Jeff can rip it up, but he NEVER does, except in the last two measures of songs (and these aren't on ANY of the recordings!), but he's usually just way too restrained for Satch's music. Crystal Planet would be a great album, but the drumming on it is really dry, and it detracts from the songs a lot (I'm used to MP throwing in those extraneous twelfth-note fills - I'm spoiled as hell). I love Mangini, Deen Castronovo, and all of Steve Vai's other drummers (especially his kick-ass (I mean cheap-ass) drum machine on the OLD shit :) ), and wish Joe would get a drummer that suited his style (NO MORE EXCLUSIVE HI-HAT/SNARE/KICK). Bissonnette did a much better job on "Time Machine"'s live disc... What the hell is it with you people who sit here and wag the dog over Metallica all the time anyway? Let me throw something into the pool here. Me: personally I don't like Load and beyond, but really enjoy everything in Metallica's previous backlog. My little brother: loves Load, and likes some old Metallica stuff. Me: I bought Load and didn't like it. Solution: I give my Load CD to my little brother, I feel good about supporting my little bro in whatever he chooses to listen to, my little brother scored big on a CD he kept borrowing from me, and my little brother turns it around and gets me hooked on the Dave Matthew's Band. Moral: What the hell does it matter where Metallica takes their music as long as someone likes it? Is it really worth it trying to enforce your opinion on another person even though you know damn well it will only reinforce their own? Rather, I feel it is much better to support others in what they wish to listen to and keep an open mind about it. You never know, it's likely that they'll do the same for you. -- KorgX3 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 5 Nov 1998 17:36:47 EST From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: New Metallica Review for Roger, Tyranny/CiS Comparison Message-ID: Howdy all - Well, it seems that the mighty Metallica debate has reared its ugly head again. Anyway, this whole big nasty mess started with Roger's initial question about the new Metallica album. Well, as someone mentioned, the album itself won't be released until the 24th, but as I type this, the brand new single is ending on my stereo (and you can bet that the tape player was recording!). It's a cover of Bob Seger's AWESOME tune "Turn the Page". Now, I have always loved this song, but 'Tallica's version is OUTSTANDING! They spiced up a relatively laid-back tune, and it really rocks. Anyway, I won't get into that whole "they suck" or "they don't suck" debate, cuz this isn't the forum for this. But, to answer Roger's question, at least the first new cover on the album is absolutely GREAT! :-) In regards to the "Tyranny" vs. "Carved In Stone" comparison/debate, my wife has always claimed Shadow Gallery to be "wussy" based on her exposure to CiS and their first album. However, she has since fallen in love with Tyranny and admits that it is worlds better than CiS. To put it in perspective, she is a big Queensryche, DT, Fates Warning, and Stratovarius fan. So, while it is a SAFE bet that if you don't like CiS, you won't like Tyranny, it certainly is not a SURE bet. For what it's worth, I say give "Tyranny" a shot. IMHO, it's the best album I've heard this year so far by A LOT. 'Nuff said for now. See ya.... Matt T. Dr. Mosh has crawled out of his cave and is now wildly swinging his verbal club, preparing for mating contests which will grant him prime territory near the stage in which to gather a herd of fine females. Unfortunately for the good Doctor, this particular form of mating ritual has not proven successful. It's approximately 40,000 years out of date. The song is about a child that has grown tired of having his freedom limited by his parents. BTW, this whole album (AJFA) has a very dark feel, since its first song, "Blackened". Hummm... I don't know. Some bands do sound like they have put some effects, but others don't. The more "screamed" vocals (At the Gates, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity) seem to be natural (well, at least I can scream like that for a good deal of time, while still maintaing the "quality"). The "cookie monster", deeper vocals are harder to accomplish (say, Amorphis, Deicide) and I think that they use some sort of effects. But after listening to Barney Greenway say that "Noise", I'm not so sure that all vocalists use effects. The man's gotta a real low voice (or there were effects involved since he started saying anything -- was this the cause he was testing the mike?) Anyway, other vocals which seem to be "true" include some of Dan Swano's on "Crimson" and Mikael Akerfeldt's on "Morningrise" or "Orchid"... Mikael *DID* use something on the first verse of "Demon of the Fall" (you know, the "Silent dance with death/Everything is lost/Torn by the arrival of Autumn/The blink of an Eye" part). At first, I didn't like it, but then I came to be used to it and now I think that it's essential to the feeling of the album, but one of my preferred parts of MAYH is, definitely, the instrumental "Epilogue". It gives me so many chills... > If you want fast and gutteral....check out early Kataklysm - > Temple of Knowledge....if you make it through the entire album your > a true fucking legend....the sounds like a dog barking!! :) Hummm... Nothing like being challenged. :-) I just went to check something about this band, and the most I could find was this: which is interesting, anyway. :-) Now, let's see if I can find some MP3 files, floating around the net... []s, Roger... P.S.: Well understood: some black metal shrieking is as humanly impossible as some cookie monster vocals... I'm just saying that the more shouted vocals are plausible without effects. -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Rogerio Brito - email_address_removed.br - http://www.ime.usp.br/~rbrito Undergraduate Computer Science Student - "Windows? Kickass!!!  The reviewer coulda trimmed down telling the whole damn story a bit - how's about not spoiling everything for the folks you're recommending the album to - but it was pretty nifty to see a Sava feature.  I must say :)  I'm very gratified.  So are all my albums and posters.  Anyway.  I thought the interview with Jon at the bottom was a great add-on, although can you say "suckup" as far as the interviewer was concerned?  Hehe, it may be genuine, it just looked so weird sometimes...

and that's folks!
