Message-ID: Greetings ye 'jamanoids... Brian H. wants an opinion on: >Eldritch - Seeds of Rage Not a bad disc, the guitar sound is a bit thin, but the keys are good. Pretty good and surprisingly unaccented vocals considering the band's from Italy. >Stratovarius - Visions Get this. Get it NOW. Neoclassical progressive metal with an incredibly tight musical web and a guitarist, keyboardist and vocalist who should be in the top 5 of their respective polls. :) >Payne's Gray - Kadath Decoded Get this. Get it NOW. Payne's Gray combines progressive metal with atmosphere in spades. Layers of keyboards, TWO operatic vocalists, beautiful flute and acoustic guitar interludes, and a kickin' concept story. How many bands do stuff based on H.P. Lovecraft? >Symphony X - Damnation Game Pure crunching in-your-face neoclassical heavy metal. Michael Romeo and Michael Pinnella (guitar and keys respectively) are MONSTERS and Russell Allen has one of the most amazing ranges around. Not just the range of notes he can sing, but how he can sound as well. Growls, wails, floating operatic vocals, and pure power. Great stuff. Taur remarked: >Shadow Gallery - Tyranny >Ok, so I've heard some people glorifying this album. I had "Carved in >Stone", and it blew. Any reason why this one is any different? As far as the music itself goes? No. More of the same atmospheric metal that makes SG great, as far as I'm concerned -- but taken to a higher level. And the production is much better, the lyrics are better, the concept story rules, and there are a host of guest stars including James LaBrie and D.C. Cooper from Royal Hunt. I count "Tyranny" as one of this year's top releases. As always, your mileage may vary. ta, Phil ================================================== Phil Carter -- Usefulware Tech Support -- email_address_removed "Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." -- Berthold Auerbach ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Nov 1998 09:29:40 -0500 From: "Metzger, Mark" To: "'(ytsejam)'" Subject: Royalties Question Message-ID: >> Freebird is at the end of Take the time, it starts right after >> take the time.... and Mody Dick is just a snippet of the >> main riff.. is ironically at the very end of take the time, after >> the freebird jam, just like 5 seconds, again it's the main >> riff.. not a part of the drum solo. I always had a question about the royalties of stuff like this. I guess that I have too much time on my hands. Say a band (call them DT) put out a six song EP of all DT-written songs. Say that one of the songs was Metropolis but they wanted to add about 20 seconds of "One" to finish the song (sadly missing from OiaL as this has become part of the song to me now !!!!!). While DT has to acknowledge that the 20 second riff was written by Metallica in the credits, how do the royalties work ?? Do they have to pay 1/7 of the whole CD's writing royalties to Metallica (because regardless of the length of the music, there are now 6+1 = 7 songs) ?? Of course, this would blow. Or, do they have to pay 20/720 of 1/7 to Metallica (because in one song, 20 of the approx 720 seconds were not written by them ?? Or is it something different ?? OiaL - definitely rocks. The consummate DT album for anyone who isn't fanatical like us here. One gripe - JLB going a little overboard, putting extra notes on holds and all that. A little too much for my tastes, but otherwise he was great vocally. The one thing that has constantly bothered me with him is his lack of enunciation on the higher notes. Just totally ruins the songs, especially Anna Lee's bridge section......ugh..... 5YiaL: quick things: 1.) Derek rocks. Plain and simple. He is just awesome, more as an entertainer than a musician. And that says a lot because he rocks on the keys. 2.) The "acoustic show" was awesome. I hate everyone who had a chance to see it live. 3.) Anyone notice how the "acoustic" show drifted away from being "acoustic".....I found that pretty funny.... 4.) "Speak to Me" - geeeeeeez......that song f'in' roks nadz... absolutely awesome. Not as awesome as To Live Forever, but very close. Would have definitely preferred that one over Anna Lee in a big way - especially the version on the video. Definitely reminded me of U2 as well.... 5.) What the hell was the other song they did at that show. Can't remember it off-hand, but just as good. 6.) Loved the "Hollow Years" video. Thought it was their best video yet. HATED the "Lie" video - way too cheezy. Saw it a long time ago, but now am reminded of how terrible it was. DT should definitely stick with non-performance shots in their videos, unless it's in a live setting a la PMU........."Silent Man" was pretty good as well, especially the first half of it. 7.) Wish there was more stuff off the FII tour, esp. them playing in front of the bigger crowds on the DP/ELP tour......and I liked that the songs they picked from the WOWOW broadcast were ones in which James' voice sounded good. He was definitely off that night from that cold or whatever. 8.) Derek rocks. and he can dance! :) -Al ===================================================================== b l i n d l a b o r s t h e b l i n d a n d I a m u n w i l l i n g t o u n c o v e r m y e y e s ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ email_address_removed OR email_address_removed OR email_address_removed HOMEPAGE:http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Towers/9280/index.html ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Nov 1998 10:26:00 EST From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: bass player perspective Message-ID: In a message dated 98-11-04 01:00:58 EST, you write: << I wonder if they will ever make a bassist's perspective mix, DS on the right, everyone else on the left, and of course bass dead center :) >> Wouldn't that be a wonderful thing?! Then, after you've recovered, skip Stratovarius, and buy Labyrinth - Return to Heaven Denied. Labyrinth is similar to Strato, but MUCH better, IMHO. Okay Brian, I recently got the live Strato "Visions" thanks to a helpful hint from a friend (have I paid my suckup dues now Skadz?:)) and at the same time I got Labyrinth "Return to Heaven Denied" Here's where I am gonna have to disagree with my friend Keeezy here. (sorry Keeezy) I like the live Strato better. I have tried and tried and tried and tried and listened and listened and listened and well the Labyrinth is just not moving me like other CD's I have bought recently including Visions. There is maybe one or 2 songs on Labyrinth that catch my ear, but not enough to make me stop what I am doing and concentrate on the songs. Labyrinth is kinda like elevator Muzak for my work day when I just need some filler noise in the background. The Strato however rocks me. It's real hard to concentrate and get work done when I have this 2 CD set in the CD player. Now the Vanden Plas, has been played enough times on Ytseradio that my appetite for this CD has been whetted thoroughly. Must have Must have Must have! Santa I have been a good girl all year this year and all I want for Christmas is The God Thing by Vanden Plas. Anyways...back to my work day. Shadow Gallery "Tyranny" - AWESOME!!! Way better than CiS, D.C. Cooper on "NWO" (wrestling fans get it) just Rules! Brendt Shreds the ass off Yngwie...still, Gary and Chris rip some mean keys...the melodies are killer, the slow stuff is very though out...the only down side is the stryper-esque cheesey background vocals...as with CiS. This Cd IS a must have!!! 3. Explorers Club "Age of Impact" - Here's where the war will start...Flame ME, and not the jam! For whoever said this cd is better than LTE...they need a new pair of ears! first of all...I didn't realize this was basicly a Magellan-based project, and I personally can't stand Magellan...so this cd has had a whopping 1 spin in my player, and was immediatly loaned out to a friend who might actually like it. I was SOOOOO disappointed with this CD I almost had to take it back for a refund. The only good thing was Petrucci...who gives a good performance, but the sound quality henders it. 4. Kiss "Psycho Circus" - For any Jammers that are Kiss fans and don't have it yet...just download the MP3's off the net, listen to it 5 times, and then you'll be bored with it. This CD is so patheticly formulated that it just insults your intelligence...go figure. O.k. that's all...just helping those of you who were thinking about some serious CD buying in the near future. Message-ID: A week ago I got pretty bored by the jam: a lot to read and not much content and I also reached a saturation point in DT's music, meaning I'd have to listen to some Poison for a while. Then I got the video and thought "ooh, baby". It's the thing I wanted(it was then when I realized that KM was not on the LIE and SM video). The SM video rocks, but I am not particular about HY's video. BTW, Puppies on Acid and JLMB is from the Bonn show, recorded by VIVA, for all those who are interested. OIaL?? "OOOOOHHhh, baby" Somebody mentioned he didn't expect much cause he listened to all the boots before. Another one that improvising is not that big a thang in DT shows. I was careful listening to the discs, not to make fast decisions, BUT I FUCKING LOVE IT !! With the keyboard audible and its sounds diverse, this is one of my favorite live recordings of DT. Keys add so much. My former favorite song LitS? Is still my favorite, this live version rocks my of. I just hope people don't look through the window, when the headbanging, dancing Au=pair makes pancakes w/ a bottle of beer and smiling broadly. JP's solo will convince all doubters, leave many guitarists speachless(calling him an asshole) and bring an invitation to the shredding hall of fame. Actually it reminded me a bit of a Paul Gilbert. Last line: I hate to break it, but I still get absolutely nothing from Speak to Me. Sorry. after reading 16 jams in row schnipp says Good-Bye Just fuckin' seize the fuckin' day... ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 4396 **************************
