I got my copy of OiaLT from Best Buy (they had 5 and I got the last one at 11:30 AM!) for $18.99. BOTH discs have the "For promotional .... the label can kiss maX's ass if they want it back ..." crap on it. It's just harder to read on disc 1. And there's no 2CD thing. It's the same kind of case as the Depeche Mode singles... I really doubt that anyone is getting screwed here. They just put that on the CDs 'cuz they are stupid. I really can't imagine a label trying to recall CDs. How would they know who has them anyway? -maX And some dude said when he asked the store about 5YiaLT, they asked who would buy that. Then he said the guy could fuck off or something. I cannot believe a couple people actually got mad at him for saying that. Well, I for one echo that "Fuck off". My impression is that a lot of people do not really take this that seriously, but to me, my music is who I am. It's a part of my soul. There are several things I felt sure would go here, but just could not fit (Robert Miles, Rush Counterparts, DT ACOS, TaDream Tangram and Rockoon, Eternity X - The Edge), but I think this is still pretty definitive. I have paid a lot of attention to what others quote as their top 20, because that music defines a lot about them. You can judge me by the music I have listed here, and PLEASE feel free to respond to me about anything you see. ThanX, -maX I have arranged them by year, and then alphabetically within the year. So here they are... Try one of the big on-line music stores (e.g., CDNow) or find the webpage for Roadrunner Records, and ask if you can order it from them directly. Focus was released on Roadrunner Records. It kinda surprises me that you can't find it. The last time I was in a DECENT record store (Rasputin's in Berkeley, Calif.), they had 3 copies of it sitting in the Metal section. > ------------------------------ > > From: Rogerio Brito > > BTW, be warned that you may hate the vocals -- the electonic parts > sometimes get on my nerves. If you have > restrictions about this genre of metal, you may consider spending your Aha. But not just "a death metal band." Among bands that play an ultra-technical style of music, or metal bands that play a style of metal combining jazz fusion and metal influences, Cynic is practically ALWAYS listed as a big influence (some examples that come to mind are Spiral Architect, Meshuggah, and Anomaly; there's more but I'd have to sit here and think of them). That one CD (Focus) really has had some awesome reverberations within this particular sub-sub-sub-genre of metal. And if you listen to the CD, it's no wonder why. From a playing perspective, this CD is one of the richest in my collection. There is so much shit happening on ALL instruments (guitars, bass, drums) throughout the CD. The last time I listened to this thing (couple of weeks ago or so), I made the mistake of listening to it while doing homework. I actually stopped doing my homework, stared at the wall in front of me, and just listened through the rest of the CD. The interplay between the instruments is really something somebody has to hear for themselves. Spectacular. Even after listening to this CD for 3 years now, this CD can still grab me like that. There's only 2 or 3 other CDs I have that grab me like that. Cynic really broke some ground with this CD. The only other band I've even heard of that attempted a similar combination of jazz and metal tendencies at about the same time was Atheist. I only have Piece of Time and Elements by them, but on these 2 CDs, if you just compare the chops between the Atheist and Cynic CDs, Cynic just wins out. Amazing stuff. Truly a special CD. So, to John Park, who was asking for help in finding this CD, make sure you do your damnedest to get it:).
