Nope the intro is sung by a Finnish choir boy named Cantores Minores. Destiny is without doubt Stratovarius best album to date IMO. The use of choirs and an orchestra is done really well, giving everything a more 'epic' feel, there's seem to be a little more depth with the songwriting. Jens also seems to be given more space to strut his stuff. Timo Tolkki's guitar playing is certainly more emotional, his solo's are full of feeling and melody, but he still shreds too :) Zero Hour self titled This is basically a quite superb packaged demo CD, that looks and sounds as good as any major progressive band could release. The music is heavy and powerful prog and they have a great vocalist too boot. Message-ID: Ya know, I don't have any formal training in music theory - just the little bits and pieces I get from the "teach yourself..." books. Now that I've identified myself as a total ameteur, lemme share some things I've noticed. Nobody likes whole notes. I dunno why, but instead of saying, "everytime the big fat hairy guy smacks the drum, I'm gonna say it's a WHOLE note", it's instead called a QUARTER note. Lookin' at my dream theater tabulature, I notice that a lot of times, triplets are used that break a QUARTER note into 3 pieces, or 12th (maybe "dodecets"?) NOTES. By saying a theme repeats every time 5 of these mutha fuckas pass by, isn't that 5/12 timing? Looking at my Yngwie tabulature, I notice that a lot of times, he takes a quarter note and instead of breaking it into 2 pieces (EIGHTS), he breaks it into 5 (TENTH Notes). Play these twice as fast (like our good ol' herring-choking buddy loves to do) and you have TWENTIETH notes. Be a completely self-indulgent prog freak and make a theme repeat every 9 or so of these notes, and you got 9/20 time sig. I fail to see how any fraction is un-realizable using this methodology. I guess it just ain't kosher to have something in the denominator that ain't a power of 2. As an Electrical Engineer - I run into this a lot...you get so educated at something that you can't see an idea unless it's explained using engineering geek parlance. Too smart equals dumb sometimes. I thought it sounded pretty cool, though not nearly as cool as the Japanese Hollow Years single (just ordered mine :-() ). P.S. #3: Does anyone else just love "The Way it Used to Be"? It has so many different styles wrapped up in one little song: The late-Floydish playing/singing on the second verse (1:20) and guitar solo (5:00), the Edge/U2-ish intro, the shitkicker rock section at the end (6:30), the kick-back keyboard interlude (4:40), the King's X riff (6:10), etc. I just think it's a great song (and James wrote the lyrics!). Also some very cool (not terribly difficult, but very cool) bass playing. Too bad it didn't make the album.... These should be recordings that you would call "the best of genre" or "desert island collection". Real high quality stuff! Any recording can be listed. It doesn't have to be progressive metal or even rock. The survey will run until Oct. 31, 1998. Results will be posted on the ytsejam and on a DT website.
