Someone asked: Q- Why hasn't anyone said anything about Still Life? A- Because those of us that have it are still in shock. Fates Warning's "Still Life" is a must have for all Fates fans. The recording is great. (a little hot on the high end) The performance is first rate. If I went into a full review, I would start babbling like a 16 year old school girl who's describing her "new" boyfriend. Get this disk!!! If OiAL is anywhere near this good, I'm going to lock myself in the basement and play it until the Police (Law enforcement, not the band) drag me away kicking and screaming. Displaying an unauthorized sign in a public place. (Dream Theater Rules!) The public place you ask??? Remember, I live in Minnesota. Can you say "Mall of America?" Because it was born in France? Its parents both Actually, this depends on the country. There are two basic rules for getting a nationality: 1) "ius solis" - you are -say- chilean if you were born in Chilean territory. 2) "ius sanguinis" - you are chilean if your father and/or mother is chilean. Not every country applies both rules. Per instance, Chile (and USA, too) apply both. Most european countries (including France and Spain) apply only 2). Argentina applies only 1). This leads to things like this: a) my father is chilean, I'm born in Spain ==> I'm chilean, not spanish (ius sanguinis for Chilean nationality, no ius solis for spanish). b) my father is spanish, I'm born in the USA ==> I'm both spanish AND american (ius sanguinis for the first, ius solis for the second). c) my father is argentinian, I'm born in France ==> I have *no* nationality (no ius sanguinis in Argentina, no ius solis in France). -- MIGUEL FARAH // miguel@webhost.cl #include // http://www.webhost.cl/~miguel <*> "Trust me - I know what I'm doing." - Sledge Hammer ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 10:07:38 -0400 From: Pat Daugherty To: Dream Theater Mailing List Subject: JLB on Tyranny Message-ID: I haven't seen much talk about it on here, but does anyone else think JLB sounds great on his short verse on I Believe from Shadow Gallery's new one-Tyranny? Well, thanks to the Ytsejam I finally lost my Operation:Mindcrime-virginity a month or two ago (can't believe it took this long for me to get O:M!). Also recently got my first Vai CD, PaW. Now it seems like it's time (ok, ok....long overdue) for me to check out Iron Maiden. I'm always hearing about these guys on the 'jam, but I've never heard any of their stuff, with the exception of "Can I Play With Madness" (I think), and I've seen the video for "Hell is From Here to Eternity" (or something like that). Here's my first question: The last few times I've checked the stores for them, I can't find ANY of their CD's except for Virtual XI, X-Factor, and I think one other one (and I'm not referring to ONE store...... more like 5 or so). I did hear something about re-issues, or re-masters or something, is this the reason I can't find their discs? Also, if this is the case, when do the new ones come out (been two weeks or so since I checked)? OK, here's Q #2: What CD should I start with? It doesn't necessarily have to be their BEST CD (I'd almost rather work my way TO the best stuff, than listen to the best CD or two - then be disappointed by the rest). For example: I might like Load/Reload if I'd never heard Master of Puppets, Lightning, Justice, or TBA. I'm actually thinking about grabbing Virtual XI (for the reason I've stated above)- I've heard very bad reviews of it from the diehard/longtime Maiden fans, but some pretty decent reviews from the less hardcore fans. Plus it looks cool. ;-) In advance I thank you kind sirs and ladies, - Joe D. email_address_removed Magellan on ICQ (# 1872723), and IRC chat ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Heaven must be more than this / When angels waken with a kiss Sacred hearts won't take the pain / But mine will never be the same He stands before the window / His shadow slowly fading from the wall And from an ivory tower hears her call / "Let the light surround you" - Dream Theater, from "Surrounded" (lyrics by Kevin Moore) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Oct 1998 10:00:30 -0500 (CDT) From: Mauricio Martinez Villarreal To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: JLB on Tyranny Message-ID: =09Can anybody compare (i couldnt find another word...) Only one little correction: track 10 is called "Die Eier von Satan" which could be translated to "The balls/eggs of Satan", the german word "Eier" has both meanings. The lyrics (if you like) are actually a recipe for hash-cookies (oh my god this is illegal - I hope the feds aren't scanning the ytsejam...) which does not include any eggs at all. hence the "...und keine Eier!" part (check my .sig) obDTC: I just got the new Shadow Gallery CD and it really rocks. The vocals are much stronger, the duets are impressive and the overall sound of the CD is excellent, comparing to CiS which sounded like it was recorded in someone's basement. This CD is one of 10 CDs i've purchased last week and it is one of the best. The rest are: Marillion - Clutching at Straws (which I like best) Fish - Sunsets on Empire Explorer's Club AoI, which I find inferior to LTE Magellan - Test of Wills - the weakest CD of all Return to Forever - the aniversery CD (double CD - the best of this amazing supergroup) Symphony X - The Divine Wings of Tragedy - also a favourite Angra - Angels Cry - not so good as I expected, and I can't listen to that Kate Bush song! Spock's Beard - Beware of Darkness & The Kindness of Strangers, of which I find BoD to be a bit better. Thoughts is a brilliant song! The best surprise was indeed CaS. I've heard bad reviews of this CD, and my CD dealer, which is a huge fan (the store's called 'Fugazi') said it sucks. Surprisingly enough, it has rarely left my CD player, and I listen to it at least once a day since I bought it 2 weeks ago. So, buy Tyranny, and if you are a Marillion fan and don't have CaS, get it! I have a two corrections about what people said before..................... 1. Track 10 is not really a recipe for pound cake, it is a recipe for hash brownies. I have a close friend that is German and i had her write out a word for word translation and I don't think "hashish" is an ingrediant of poundcake.... =) 2. Aenima (track 13) is about calofornia falling into the ocean but more specifically it is based on the book "Lucifer's Hammer" by larry niven and Jerry Pournelle. I highly recommend this book cuz it is unbelievable. Actually dream works ripped off a bunch of parts from that book when they made "Deep Impact" and are now being sued by the authors. Anyway, Tool is great, Check out the CD. I am a HUGE prog fan and this disc is in my ALL TIMME TOP 10 and when you have a CD collection of over 600 discs, it's hard to acheive that status. I think their most accessible CD is "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son." It was the most popular, and IMO, was their best effort. After that, I would pick Powerslave, Piece of Mind, and (yes, even) The X-Factor. Although I preferred Bruce D. in the band, Blaze is great if you don't sit there and ponder if Bruce could've done it better. (Two completely differently styled singers).
