It's great! >It has a lot of prog influence, too. It just really kicks ass. Plus, >these guys can be really funny. In the title song about wanting the >world to end: "I've a suggestion to keep you all occupied. Learn to >swim." And I just found out, for anyone who cares, that track 10, which >sounds like a nazi speech or something, is actually a recipe for >poundcake. This is a fantastic album. Tool has been one of my favorites since sober came out back when I was a freshman or sophomore in high school. But besides being really funny, they're all majorly into BUTTSEX!!! Prison sex, Stinkfist, and some other song on Aenima that mentions putting "your fucking finger up your aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaassssssss!" all have to do with being screwed in a very uncomfortable place (and not the back of a Volkswagon, either). Another funny part of Aenima is the little organ interlude that's all happy and carnival sounding. But actually, "Aenima" the song is about California falling into the ocean, and that's why they should learn to swim. The song addresses all the bad stuff in American culture that is usually magnified in CA: "Fret for your hairpiece and fret for your latte and fret for prozac and fret for your lawsuit and fret for your car it's a bullshit three ring circus side show..." although I probably didn't get all the frettables in the right order. Tool actually exemplifies more what I think prog should be. The Magna Carta sound just doesn't really seem that progressive to me. All the bands are very talented, but the operatic vocals, guitar-and-keyboard metal sound just seems awfully dated to be labled "progressive." When I hear the term "progressive" I think of more than just complicated music and arrangements in a standard setting. I think of new (or at least different) instrumentation, new sounds, and interesting music that takes a few listens to absorb. That's why I consider bands like The Tea Party, I Mother Earth, and Tool progressive, because they do more than play complex songs to expand the realm of rock music. Also, they take a more modern sound and progress upon it. Most of the Magna Carta bands I've heard tend to progress upon a style of music that was dominant a decade ago. I think to be truly progressive, a band needs to make progress with music that is more current (hmm, who'da thunk? Alterna-prog). I'm not necessarily saying make third eye blind progressive (I think that's impossible), but take I Mother Earth, for example. They are all wonderful, very talented musicians, they let their talent show, their music isn't just 3-chord pop (some of it is pretty complex, actually) but they definitely have a very modern sound. I listened to a Shadow Gallery album and had to re-check the publication date to make sure it wasn't from 1987. That doesn't seem very progressive to me. Let me end this by saying that I absolutely love everything prog stands for: having musical integrity, actually practicing your instrument to be a skilled player, not following musical formulas, etc. I just think prog should progress a little bit more. PS - I'd be very willing to hear some INTELLIGENT discussion about my little rant here, but let's keep the flaming to a minimum. I have a portable Sony recorder (the MZR-50), and so far it's been verrrry cool. It's not good for recording concerts (you can hear about 10 seconds worth of very quiet interference every 35 or so seconds when it's writing out its buffer to disc). But for recording from CDs or things like MP3s off the computer, it works like a charm. And you can change recording levels on the MZR-50, just not *while* it's recording like the Sharp can. If you have an analog soundcard, hook a minijack to minijack plug up from your line-out on the soundcard to the line-in on the minidisc recorder. Set the recording level on the minidisc unit to where the loudest passages nearly peak out. Then record. If you have a digital soundcard like a Zefiro ZA2 (around $400), all you have to do is plug a toslink to optical minijack plug up to the minidisc recorder, put the synchro-record "on" on the minidisc unit, hit record (which puts the unit on pause while it waits for a digital signal), then the instant you start playing the MP3 on your computer it begins recording. Purely digital, purely ahhh.. =) (not really pure pure, if you understand the compression it goes through on both formats) Whatever the case, the digital method of transferring MP3s sounds better and is easier. Nice portable, track-accessible way to listen to all these DT MP3s floating around. Minidisc is great.. I'm just waiting for the day when they release a non-compression-based version of it. Audio compression on a disc the size of a minidisc is pretty retarded when you compare it to the density of a DVD. So if a German couple spends a year in France and has a child there, the child is French and not German? Because it was born in France? Its parents both being German having absolutely nothing to do with it? What crack you smokin, Jeremy? (I know, I know, this phenomena only has validity to a newborn baby if such a couple travels to AMERICA. I still think it's about as weird as a presidential cigar treatment.) Nationalities. When I first met Derek I asked him where he got his hair. It's very thick, and very black, and can only be Mediterranean or Middle Eastern. He said it was from the Greek side of his family. Derek may have been lying, I mean he DID once say to an entire crowd of Japanese fans "I'M A HOMO," which was untrue, just ask the Chew brothers. So it's possible he has no Greek ancestry whatsoever. But James LaBrie's father is from Mars, which is the Roman god of war, which is why James enjoys cursing and being furious. And John Petrucci, well DUH, the last name says it all. He's Irish-American. Symphony X has a new bass player for four weeks now, Thomas Miller had to leave the band because of health problems. I've seen them live a couple of days ago, it was one of the best shows I've seen for a long time!! Incredible!! The name of the new guy is Andy DeLuca (he's only 22 years old!!) and IMO he fits well into the band. Apart from Symphony X he's working on a project with two Cynic members. If you're interested in news, show reviews and discussions (about how bad everybody feels about Miller leaving the band for example...) about Symphony X, just join the SX-mailing list "The Edge Of Forever" by sending an empty e-mail to the address email_address_removed ! Yea, I do that alot with my portable MD recorder Kenwood DMC-G7R. I never had any complaint regarding sound quality. This particular unit uses the latest ATRAC sound compression so it's supposed to sound even better than CD (I can't tell the difference myself). If this unit was lost I'd buy another one in a blink of an eye, regardless of the outrageous price! The best MD(+recorder) portable unit on the market! How to tape mp3 to minidisc? Just hook it up with your soundblaster, set the levels and hit play and red button, doh. I'm interested in taping a live show with it. Can anyone suggest a microphone for such a task (as small and portable as possible please).
