I bought two tickets and paid 10 dollars in additional charges. I think I will buy from the outlet on campus from now on, because it will only cost an extra dollar per ticket. On another, more DT related note, I introduced a friend of mine, who plays trumpet, to Dream Theater. He is mostly into Jazz, but when we took a midi file of A Change of Seasons and analyzed it using Cakewalk, he was blown away by the time signature changes, number of chords, and the chord progression. He didn't believe that any musician was able to accomplish this. He didn't even think that 17/16 time was possible until he saw the two brief portions of ACOS that are in 17/16 time. I didn't even fully appreciate the song, even though I already loved it, until I saw it broken down into individual tracks and I saw the staffs for the music. It was quite an awesome experience. --------------------------------------------- -- Kevin A. And sensibly, if your name's not Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteen, please don't post in their defense. :) Quick albums reviews for the day: Shadow Gallery's "Tyranny": Although some people thought this CD should come with a gift certificate for Hickory Farms, I can't say the same. Although it contains lots of soaring, well-blended vocals, I don't think any of it's cheesy at all. It IS one of those albums that I might have to listen to a couple of times to really enjoy (because there's so much involved), but I have good feelings about this disc being hailed as a top acheiver for '98. Surprise of the album: Chris Ingles' new look. Bruce Dickinson's "A Chemical Wedding." This one reminds me of taking a trip to the dentist without feeling the pain. It massages the gums, has jagged, broken teeth, performs extractions, rows you down a root canal, and ends with a nice refreshing flouride treatment with all the slobber involved. Maybe not as great as "Accident of Birth" but is an excellent follow up. And to answer an unasked question... Yes, Adrian is playing on thie CD as well. Do you really think that Steve Vai OR Yngwie could have gotten where they are today, without 110% dedication, and 110% heart and soul devotion to their music and their instruments? Just because someone has technical mastery of their instrument dosent mean they have no soul. It means they practice more , and they are more dedicated then the average schmuck who wants to be a "soulfull" notalent wannabe. That shit is just an excuse and everyone on this list knows it. Facing the Animal is a great album , Fire Garden is a great album. And both have tons of soul. Listen to "For the Love of God" and tell me Vai dosnet have soul, or listen to "Id Die Without You" , and then tell me Yngwie wasnt inspired when he wrote that tune. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 6 Oct 1998 01:57:45 EDT From: email_address_removed To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: YTSEJAM shirts rock!
