(it's not even mine) I just use it to read my mail, thats all, and if you don't like the fact that i use email, get a life yourself. This must be about the most pathetic thing i've ever heard. Besides, I really think that YOU are the one spending too much time in cyberspace. It makes you feel safe, right? You can say anything you want, do anything you want, and nobody'll ever know who you are. Yeesss, that is soo easy isn't it? Insulting people you don't know, knowing they can't hurt you... I bet you wouldn't dare to say these things to me and/or all the other people right in the face. Think about this and grow up... Okay... Now for something completely different. Just picked up the last Ayreon album, which is their third, after The Final Experiment and Actual Fantasy. I don't know if this project has been dealt with before on the Jam, in that case I missed it... Anyway, this double-CD, called Into the Electric Castle - a Space Opera, is exactly what it says it is: a magnum opus in opera style: it has several lead singers who each have a different role/part in the story... The singers are really a bunch of different and very talented (and famous) people: the "cast" includes: Fish (!!!!!!!) as the Highlander, Damian Wilson (Threshold & Landmarq) as the Knight, Peter Daltrey as the Voice, Edwin Balogh (Omega), Anneke Van Giersbergen (The Gathering), Sharon Den Adel (Within Temptation) and others... The "Instrumentalists" are also a strange group of people, including Robby Valentine and Clive Nolan of Arena and Pendragon... The "brain" and main composer (and one of the singers as well) is Dutch all-round guy Arjen Lucassen, who's also the producer... Anyone I'm only listening to it right now, so I can't review the album yet... To be continued... EVIL!!!! i THINK mpm wrote: >>but I still can't picture a guitarist like Petrucci or a drummer like Portnoy doing mainstream or commercial stuff and no prog.<< i cant agree with that one. i would say that id RATHER they not go completely mainstream and that they keep playing prog, but i can definitely picture anyone in this band doing any number of styles, because i feel they are some of the most well-rounded and versatile musicians out there. THAT is why i like the band, not because they are virtuosos playing at the speed of light. rob wrote: >>Why can't we just view FII and LTE as different sides to the personalities involved? Couldn't it be that the band members also like a little variety for their palates?<<< and Dr. Teeth said: >>>Wow - what a statement: LTE is what keeps DT together.<<< I must agree with Rob and disagree with "Dr. Teeth" (what a *wrong* statement, IMO :). I think DT do indeed want some variety, and I think that's where songs like TAMP, etc come from. LSOAD and maybe even Another Day might be other examples. One dimensionalism is even more boring than having an album with a couple of songs like HY on it. I don't believe the side projects are what keeps DT together (and it would have to be more than LTE because only two DT members were involved in that); I think that the side projects serve several purposes: 1) they're probably loads of fun to do 2) they provide opportunities to work with, and perhaps learn from, other great artists [eg. "Wow, I got to work with stick-king Tony Levin!" 3) the creative ideas of some may likely inspire new ideas in others ...I'm sure I could go on. It probably helps in getting the members of DT some time away from the band they spend their lives with, which may help keep the band together (in that sometimes if you spend too much time with the same people you get sick of them), but I DON'T think the side projects serve as the surrogate lovers that holds the marriage together because the married people aren't gettin' enough lovin' at home [that's an analogy folks, albeit a poor one]. Dave said: >>>...there is not one song I don't like/love (including AL and TAMP, which are both beautiful...<<< This is where opinions will vary. I love LSOAD, TSM, and AD (which I think fall under the same 'category' as HY, TAMP, and AL). Those are beautiful songs. HY, TAMP, and AL just don't move me the way those first three do. I think a 'ballad' can be really beautiful and moving, and some that DT have written have been just that (I think SDV falls in here, at the top of the list for me, and I think people might have complained about it being commercial if it didn't have all those sampled quotes in there). For me (and it seems as though for a number of people who tend to skip those songs) the ballad-type songs on FII just weren't all that great--I mean, you win some, you lose some. Take, for example, the latest Spock's Beard album. The fourth song on _The Kindness of Strangers_ is entitled "June" and it's a ballad with probably the most commercial potential of any of the Beard's songs. And it's an incredibly beautiful song. It really moves me. It alone is worth the cost of the album. But they weren't writing it to have a commercial song, but rather to write a beautiful piece of music that happens to be considerably different than most of their other songs. It's the same with DT; I don't think DT were writing the so-called "commercial" songs to be more commercial (except for YNM; that's a toss up), but rather writing them for the sake of writing a different type of beautiful music. [I must also add that although the FII 'balads' don't move me a lot, they're still DT songs, and much better than most of the other 90s stuff that you'll here on the radio, and therefore I usually listen to them when I play the album and I get pumped to hear even YNM on the radio]. Ernesto said: >>>Why cant a band just write simpler music because they want to, or because they find a new challenge in writing good short songs? Why must it always be a compromise or a sell-out?<<< I totally agree. And there are some great short(er) songs like CiaW and 6:00 and Surrounded. Fantastic songs, but not long songs. Again, SB had a larger number of shorter songs on _Kindness_, but they still kicked: "In the Mouth of Madness" kicks as much ass as "Walking on the Wind" on _Beware of Darkness_; it's just a more concise piece of music. Time to go. Just 'IMO' Thoughts. I think that was a real low blow to all the musicians out there. Sorry all us lovers of music are stuck in a sick world where music (or whatever we want to call top 40), is judged on how well you can dance to it. Basically I would play for free. Why? Because I love to do it. I'm not in a famous rock band nor am I going to put my efforts to do so. Sure the money is nice :) but thats not why I do it. I have another job, but if I'm not playing I'm not happy. I love to play stuff like DT but when you look at a crowd bored off their ass nothing diminishes your ego so fast. I love to play songs people are going to dance to (oops I said the D word), bob their head to and cheer for you. That is what playing in a cover band is about, right? If I wanted the general public to listen to what I want, I would be playing original tunes. So I say again I don't do it for the money, and I think 99% of all the musicians out there don't. I didn't wake up one day and say hey I need to find away to make money, oh yeah music. Thats horsepucky crap. So even till the day I die I'll play music it's what I know it's my first and only love (try telling that to a woman). I will agree that a paycheck for your services is nice, and by all means I'm not going to turn it down, but that is not why I do it. Sorry to vent, but for the money is a real crappy thing to say to a musician. If you know what I mean ;) Well, after listening to Younique for a solid few weeks, I can definitely say that it was well worth the wait. Im not saying it is the best CD of the year, or even better than Behind, but it is well worth the money I paid for it. Each of the songs on there is strong, and Superior really stresses one of the strongest attributes of some of my favorite bands: variety. There is nothing more I like about a band when it decides to throw another style or another idea or perspective into their music. It keeps music fresh. And that is reason I think "Free Minded" is the best track on the album. It goes through everything...Sitar at the beginning, heavy thrash, jazz...Variety is like a preservative for music, preventing it from going stale. I cant say I like the last track...Kind of repetitive, but the first track, "Not With Me" just rocks. I love how Tangerman is distorted, and then comes right to the forefront with the line "Don't need your well meant orders." It is so direct, so clear, and the guitar groove behind is so damn strong. That just rocks my nads every time I listen to it. As for whether it is better than Behind? Apples and oranges I think. This album is so completely different than what Superior did with Behind that they are very hard to compare. I think Superior's best songs, like "Why" and "Until the End" are on Behind, but I think Younique will pass the test of time. If it werent for the fact that I have a TON of new music to check out, Younique would probably be in my changer for a few months, at least. I know this wasn't a review in the truest sense, but I had been reading about other people's opinions of Younique, and felt I had to add my own. I hope what Ive written might influence others to try out Superior. With Symphony X, Angra, Spock's Beard, Echolyn and Fates, these guys are in my second tier of favorites. DT of course, is number one :) I tried listening to Lemur Voice again to try to get into them again, and I just couldnt do it. I just cant listen to their singer. I need a strong singer in a band, and the guy for LV just doesnt do it for me. The music is nice, but there is no drive behind the vocals. Kinda the same reason why Enchant, and to a certain extent Vanden Plas dont do all they could for me...Vocals are KEY. There are tons of guys that can play as fast as Romeo and Petrucci, but how many singers are there like LaBrie, Matos, Allen, Tangerman, and Morse. THOSE guys know how to sing with some fuckin balls. I just cant get into the vocalists in Vanden plas, Enchant, and lemurvoice... Anyway, Im really starting to like King's X...These guys can write some serious tunes...They are different. Not as complicated, but that is a good thing sometimes. Im getting Galactic Cowboys soon and from what I hear, I will probably like those guys too. Just more CDs to buy...What a shame :) Later Jon ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Oct 1998 17:41:41 -0500 From: email_address_removed (Bruce Forst) To: email_address_removed Subject: MUSIC: the phantom menace!!! People who like music passionately have a hard time understanding that for others music can be such a small part of their lives. I know this one girl who confessed to never listening to music and how she only owns two cds and doesnt even have a car stereo!. I dont think that I could live like that. I have to get a new cd every so often just so I can have something new to listen to. I usually have a cd playing at all times when I am in the house. I always pack up my little portable cd player to take with me in the car, even if that means that I might be a little late because I took a few minutes longer that morning standing in front of my cds trying to find the perfect one to match my mood that day. Its very important to me... music. But I also have friends who have their own passions. One girlfriend likes painting and photography so I had to explain how I get the same feeling from an awesome piece of music that she would get from seeing a nice photograph or a Rothko painting (and how many people like Rothko here? huh?). Another friend just loves animation and computer graphics and from listening to people that have other interests I've learned to appreciate things a little more.... Hanging around with someone whose an expert on a particular subject can be a real eye/ear opening experience. What really disgusts me sometimes are the people who can't understand how other people don't like their music and never seem to "give it a chance" they say then probably turn around and wonder why someone else keeps trying to get them to go out looking at rocks or something. It works both way... nothing gives people a better vibe than the feeling that you're listening. I also bet than for alot of people here music is a real stabilizing force in their lives. No matter how depressing or hectic life can get I know I can jump in my car put in a great cd and feel a little better. bruce forst email_address_removed ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Oct 1998 15:55:34 -0700 (PDT) From: Ernesto Schnack To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 4314 Message-ID: > Stryper's sales didn't come close to that of the other bands in the top > 10 videos, in fact, MTV at first rejected Stryper's video for "Honestly" > for being "too patriotic" (whatever that means), but the loyal fans > rallied together and voted, and voted, and voted..for their favorite > band! > Yeah, but, where is Stryper now? :) > > Did anyone catch Conan the other night? but Conan actually played > > 10-15 seconds of "Somthing For Nothing", around the part where Geddy is > > shreaking!! > > > > I forgot the context, as I was really wasn't paying close attention, but It was basically that some baseball player had played some 2,112 odd consecutive games, and Conan played the album as a tribute.
