Here's a couple quickies: 1) general consensus is that Racer X was "first" to use the X as a part of a band name. "Racer X" actually comes from an old Japanese animation called "Speed Racer", where Racer X was one of the characters in the show. 2) Eternity X added the X in their name to keep from being sued for copyright infringement (a Christian band already had trademarked "Eternity"). 3) King's X: this expression actually dates back to medieval times where it was more often used as "King's Cross". Anyone marked with a King's Cross was under the protection of the king, for one reason or another, and was to be left unmolested. 4) Symphony X: to the best of my knowledge they just did it because it sounded cool. :) Ta, Phil ================================================ Phil Carter -- Usefulware Tech Support email_address_removed (work), email_address_removed (personal) "I should never have written all those tank programs." -- Kevin Flynn, "Tron" Currently playing: Rush -- "Hold Your Fire" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Sep 1998 11:32:22 -0700 (PDT) From: Ernesto Schnack To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Jen Message-ID: > Jen: I can't belive it is really you. Nice job Ptacek:) Anyways, just to add to your chord primer, I know a very practical way of learning chords: Learning to do walking bass w/ comping on the guitar. Obviously since your hand going all over the place playing bass, you have to know your chords well. I'm taking a class on that this semester, and in the first five minutes, I pretty much knew D-7 up and down the neck, I shit you not. For Yes, go with Close to the Edge, Fragile, The yes Album, or Relayer. From 80s Yes, go with Drama, or 90125. Also look into YesSongs, YesShows, and both Keys to ascension albums. If you are into coilations, go with The Yes box set, I forget the name of it right now, or a little bit cheaper is YesStory, a two cd set that has somne good stuff. For Genesis, definitely pick up Foxtrot, Selling England by the pound, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. Also, Seconds Out, and Three Sides live may be cool, but 3sl has more commercial stuff on it. Look into Win and Wuthering and And then there wer three, too. Duke is good, but it gets a little commercial from there. If you don't care, then go with Duke, abacab, genesis, invisible touch, and we can't dance. The way we walk are two live albums from 1991, so try them, too. Calling all stations is one I would avoid right now. HOpe this all helps. Hope this even goes through, I am trying out Outlook Express at work. Cross your fingers. Message-ID: (Lurk mode = off) Howdy everyone, I'm new to the Jam (lurking for a couple of weeks now) and a fairly new DT fan. The first album I bought from them a few months ago was Falling Into Infinity and I was totally awestruck by the complex rythems and JP's and the whole group's playing style, but I guess you all were too when you first heard them |-). Anyways, I've always been a huge Rush fan and I didn't think music could get any better or more complex (without going into the classical stuff like Bach and Mozart) then Rush. Not that Rush is inferior by any means (my 2 new favorite albums are Rush - Test for Echo and DT - Falling Into Infinity), but now I've been opened up to totally new genre that I though only existed with Rush. Being a musician myself (Bass in my band, Guitar for 15 years) I can fully appreciate the complexity and effort it takes to write and play progressive songs like that. Well, now that thats done... Yesterday I bought Fates Warning - A Pleasant Shade of Gray after seeing some people talking about the group on the Jam. This album kicks major booty (IMHO) and I was wondering if some of you guys/gals could point me in the direction of some other Prog Metal groups like FW and DT. I may have to sell some of my Madonna CDs to support this new habit! |-) I've got most of DT's stuff but I was wondering where I could get some of the boots and foriegn(sp?) stuff? Also is the "Live in Tokyo" video any good? I appreciate the help and feel free to flame away if Ive asked something that should already be known or offended anyone. Message-ID: Their chord progressions. They're strange! Like, they'll take standard chord progressions, and do SOMETHING to them so they sound different. Also, the same holds true with bass lines. Take your typical bass line which just walks from the key note down an octave. King's X will play it, still eight notes, but somehow manage to make it sound COMPLETELY DIFFERENT. Consequently, all of their songs sound the same. Because I don't understand their chord progressions/rhythm patterns/etc., it's tough for me to distinguish between them. So the songs all sound very similar. (They all sound VERY GOOD... but very similar.) Someone want to enlighten me on this? I don't have good enough pitch to tell what they're doing different. Also... is anyone in the Washington (D.C.) area going to the King's X show at Jaxx on October 7? Anyone able to give a lift to a couple of college Ytsejammers? CD-R boots are usually better sound quality (cause no one would pay for a 2 disc set of someone farting, even if it was of the night that the singer's hair caught on fire and the bassist sang "I'm a little teapot" as an encore) and the medium tends to be much less prone to degredation over time.
