OK, they play = the same instrument, they play (played) in DT - but there's no more = likes between them. They have totally different styles. Kevin Moore is = more of a keyboard player than Sherinian. Sherinian is more of a "guitar = player" on keyboards, and he does a great job with that. To me, Kevin Moore is more of Dream Theater. Derek Sherinian represents = everything DT isn't to me. But I like the things he play. E.g. I just = LOOOVE the keyboard solo on "Deep in heaven" part of ToT. I LOOOVE the = song concepts he comes up with (NM, LitS, AL)... but it's really not DT = to me... I can't find a good way to explain myself. Jim Shields: > Kevin's parts in some of the older songs, esp. on > Awake, really annoy me now. For example, on CiaW,=20 > that main keybd theme is a pretty cool part, but it sounds=20 > pretty lame with that string sound. The organ on the intro=20 > of the Mirror is pretty tame, too, Don't you think that has something to do with the producer? I bet that = David Prater and John&Duane suggested that Kevin should have those = sounds. When DT began their cooperation with Shirley, I guess they must = have had some sort of discussion what sounds to use on that and that = instrument and the likes. Maybe Derek was stubborn enough to win the = "choice of sounds" debate. Correct me if I'm wrong, 'cause I don't know shit 'bout this, it's a = wild guess. > Anyway, all you people who like Kevin Moore better are on crack. HIM - Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666 This album was recommended to me by my CD dealer (damn him and blast his eyes), knowing full well that I would buy it. HIM (apparently the abbreviation of His Infernal Majesty) hail from Finland, and that is all I know about the band other than the fact that I haven't fallen for a new band so much for a long time. Gothic hard rock would be a possible description of the general style, sort of like Type O Negative mixed up with Joy Division and rounded off with a goodly portion of Moist. The most striking thing about HIM are the stunning vocals by singer Ville Valo - a flawless performance throughout the whole album. The songs are essentially simple in structure, solid guitar riffs supported by driving bass lines and soaring keyboards that form the canvas on which Ville paints eerie pictures. There are three tracks on the album that stand out - the fuzzed guitar riff that weaves in and out of "Our Diabolikal Rapture" is so fat that is carries a cholesterol health warning, and the cover versions of Chis Isaak's "Wicked Game" and Blue Oyster Cult's "(Don'tFear) The Reaper" show just how much music is in the originals. Perhaps some of the list members from Finland can shed more light on this promising new band. Well worth 9/10. stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: Monster Magnet - Powertrip ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Sep 1998 18:43:41 +0530 (IST) From: "Balaji K. Some of this isn't really pop, but it is not really prog either. These are a few albums I would reccommend. I Mother Earth - Scenery and Fish (they thank "Dream Theatre" in their liner notes) a few years old, but still awesome Screaming Trees - Sweet Oblivion Big Wreck - In Loving Memory of ... Gov't Mule - Dose Sarah McLachlan - the best of the "neo-alt-postfeminist-femrock" singers Fiona Apple - don't like her beliefs (ie 'spare the turkey's life'), but at least she makes some enjoyable music Better Than Ezra Live Well, I think that is a good start on the world of non-prog music. I probably am a little bit out of the loop myself, although I occasionally flip on eMpTyV just to see if they will have real music videos on. There is some other stuff I know of, but I think it reeks. Later, --------------------------------------------- -- Kevin A. The style is more like "Angels Cry" than the incredible "Holy Land". The production is not very well. The album has less keyboards and latin percusions. "Holy Land" is more progressive than "Fireworks" (IMO) "Lisabon" and "Metal Icarus" are the best songs. To tell you the truth, I expected a better album than this after the outstanding "Holy Land". I don't know if "Fireworks" is a step forward ! But it's still good. Some of you may have noticed that I've been MIA for a while. I had some hardware problems going on at home, but now that they're resolved, I'm back on line (so stop talking about me behind my back :). A thousand monkeys in email_address_removed's basement typed: > 3. most critical..i've always wondered..about DT..HOW DO THEY REMEMBER ALL > THIS STUFF? (i've been asking myself for years now..) I often asked myself this about Rush songs as I was learning them, back when I was a beginning bassist. "There are so many *parts*! How do they remember where everything goes?" Needless to say, as a more experienced bass player, I once again considered quitting after hearing I&W for the first time. However, I then remembered something that has always struck me as odd. My good friend Frank (whom many of you know as Mojoman) is a rather accomplished guitarist, and was quite the EVH devotee for many years. Yet it seemed that every time we played "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love," arguably the simplest in the VH repertoire, Frank would forget where the second guitar solo started. Yet the far more complex stuff we wrote on our own, Frank (almost) always played flawlessly. The moral of the story is that, as far as I can tell, when you have written a piece yourself, there is so much of you in the music that you don't have to think about what you're doing. It sort of "just comes out." When playing a cover, however, I always find myself saying things to myself such as "OK, that's the second chorus, so four more bars of this and then we have to go into the bridge," etc. When we listen to DT (or Rush, or whoever), it's someone else's music to us. Yet to the members of the band, it's their own music, and they have a personal attachment. Also, I think the process of writing becomes so firmly entrenched in the mind that when playing the song years later, you can still remember the first time the band jammed it in rehearsal. (Mike? Derek? Opinions?) Sorry to be so long-winded, but it's been a while. :) -d ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Digital Man \|/ ____ \|/ "640 K ought to be enough email_address_removed "@'/ ,. \`@" memory for everyone." -Gates email_address_removed /_| \__/ |_\ "He won't need a bed http://www.dreamt.org/d-man \__U_/ He's a digital man" -Peart ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 4276 **************************
