I was just wondering if this was because both films are in some way related to Dream Theater. Since nobody else has mentioned my all-time favourite, here it is - "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife And Her Lover". You probably won't find this masterpiece in a cinema, but good video stores should be able to find it for you - very weird, very wonderful and an excellent production. There is also a musical link (albeit somewhat tenuous) - Ian Dury plays the chief pimp. And finally, some new releases to look forward to (for those that don't listen to just prog) MESHUGGAH - Chaosphere (October/November) THE GATHERING - title unknown (November 5th, double CD) MY DYING BRIDE - 34.788%...Complete (October 19th) stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: Kyuss - And The Circus Leaves Town ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 Sep 1998 16:09:46 +0200 From: Dushko To: email_address_removed Subject: Crossroads classical piece/Jazz recomendation to Totikus Message-ID: > Date: Sun, 06 Sep 1998 08:41:47 PDT > From: "Gabriel Fran?a" > Subject: Fav movies > > About Crossroads, the classical piece plyed in the end of the > movie is Paganini`s Capricho 5, isn`t it?? Yep, Pagannini - Capriccio No. 5 ! I have it played from Leonidas Kavacos. > From: Totikus > Subject: Jazz > > Music Blvd is offering two free jazz cd's that were mentioned here - > DiMeola's Elegant Gypsy and Mahavishnu Orchestra's Birds Of Fire. > Which one would be a better purchase for a jazz newbie? Hi Totikus, what's up? :) Well, it's certainly a difficult choice, really! You choose what you like most: - Al DiMeola's album is maybe his best known and acknowledged stuff, and certainly become popular with it. Great album, great playing, Spanish music influences all over it. Jazz Rock shredding, awesome percusions work. - Mahavishnu: Also best known album of the band! Crazy stuff! But MUCH, MUCH more weirder music than Al. Folks call it jazz fusion music, and Mahavishnu were one of the pioneers in that style. If you never heard Mahavishnu music it might be difficult to get use to it, but once you do, it's great! Great playing all over it, crazy guitar solos, crazy Billy Cobham drums... Hope it helps at least a little bit! :) If you want more infos e-mail me privately. Dushko \|/ _____________________________o_o_______ <| \ / |> <| "Chuck! Chuck! Perhaps whoever said he has an advance copy can answer them. 1. Are all the songs taken from the Paris show? 2. Is it the Fasten Your Seatbelts version of the YtseJam? 3. Do they play Caught in a Web or Caught in Alice's Nine Inch Tool Garden? 4. Does Peruvian Skies include the snippets of Have a Cigar and Enter Sandman? 5. Do they actually play all of Metropolis Pt. 1 and Learning to Live or do they shorten them significantly into a medley? 6. What are the trackbreakdowns and times? Catching up at work after Dragon*Con Thursday-Sunday. I met sooo many cool people and saw lots of cool stuff. You should go next year. Anyway, the point of this little note is to remark on the Wyzards concert late Saturday afternoon at the 'con. In a word: in-fuckin-credible. One of the best concerts this year (and after the 'tage show a couple months back and the two Buffett shows in July, that's saying something). The soundcheck and setup went on for about 45 minutes (par for the course for Dragon*Con). (sorry, Pellaz, but it's true). It was kind of interesting, actually, watching them zero in on exactly the right sound for each instrument. Mark Peters (the Big Swifty) rolled in about twenty minutes before they started playing and we spent the time chatting about the con and music in general. Good to see ya again, Swifty. Then the show started and I forgot everything but the music. Absolutely astounding playing from all concerned (I saw a lot of surprised looks in the audience when I could tear myself away from staring at the stage, like "good grief, I had no idea that they were *this* good!!!!" Trust me, folks -- they ARE. Second note: The show was loud. Very loud. Very very very loud. :) All the instruments could be heard clearly and each of the four vocalists could be heard just fine (yes, all four of the bandmembers sing), but overall it just slammed you like a sledgehammer. Not that I minded this, during the show; the wall-of-sound thing is very impressive. But after the show....well, my ears are still ringing a little bit, two days later. :) The music itself: Very impressively executed. They played four Glass Hammer songs ("Morannon Gate" from _Journey of the Dunadan_, "Lliusion" from _Perelandra_, and "The Conflict" and "On To Evermore" from _On to Evermore_), and several Wyzards songs including the epic masterpiece "All of the World" (over 19 minutes). David Carter can shred with the best of them on guitar, while Steve Babb keeps a thunderous low end going on bass, Walter Moore's complex drumming pounds relentlessly, and Fred Schendel bids fair to outdo the mighty Keith Emerson with his searing keyboards. Steve handles most of the lead vocals, but Walter sang lead on "The Conflict" and David took lead vocals for parts of "All of the World". Incredible show; I was wishing they'd been given about three hours to properly showcase all their material. The band is very friendly and is always willing to hang out and talk to their fans. I see them every year at Dragon*Con (usually as Glass Hammer) and they always put on a great performance. Go to http://www.glasshammer.com/ and check it out. Wyzards rules and their show alone was worth admission to D*C. For all the other stuff I saw and did....well, let's just say that Wyzards was the best of a very enjoyable Saturday. If they come anywhere near you, GO SEE THEM. You'll be glad you did. Im not so surprised to be honest. They are excellent musicians and so should not have any timing troubles, huh? But, have you compared the length of Lie on Awake and the version they did on this tour. Due to the fact they want to be "groovy" which attracts a wider crowd they slowed it down awfully. I loved it still, but it was hell slow. Or was i really that drunk? ;-) I had the general feeling that they do the songs live now a bit slowed down. Just a feeling, though. UAGM was as it should be, fast, ass kicking and rockin. but dont get me wrong now, i have nothing against slowing down songs (too much), especially since its only a feeling i had. Well, yea, this can really occur. It always depends on the factory that produces the final discs. David Gilmour could tell you loads of stories bout that. Producing the live PULSE abum they had serious troubles with pressing the discs. They were just sounding like shit. Then they sent the same glassmaster to another factory (which than made all for Europe) and he was very pleased with the result. And i remember in an interview he said: "In the US the band are on Sony and Sony have done their own glass over there and that was a whole other can of worms." (Guitarist interview, 7/95, p.38) See what i mean? So there are reasons why your FIIs might sound a bit different. ytsegreetings Dryheat (...in Houston they say that?) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Sep 1998 16:52:29 -0500 From: Jim Shields To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Therion / movies / my sig.
