As it is now, he *used* to be a bootleg operator working under the company name Prism Records. He offered a number of Dream Theater boots (most of which were collections rather than whole concerts) with demos and live stuff and a lot of etc. material many of us go nuts for (like John Arch singing WDADU songs). He also had an extensive Rush and a growing Ryche catalogue. This is all in the past tense. He's closed to orders and is concentrating on his legal pursui -- a gaming shop in Arizona. I guess the answer now is Mike Bahr's just another jammer. I don't remember hearing about any other FII singles, and it depends on which version you get of the HY single as to which tracks are on it (the Euro version has 4, while the Jpnse version has 5 tracks). I have neither, so if there's anyone out there willing to give an answer (is it in the FAQ yet?) Message-ID: Hey guys and gals, I'm listening to Relayer right now, and am wondering, was any of the album recorded live? The liner notes give a credit for "tapes by (so and so)" and there's a reference to mobil sound equipment being used. How much of the album was recorded outside a traditional studio, and did they play it for a crowd when they recorded? Sorry for the lack of DTC, but I gotta know, and I don't have access to the a.m.y group (who'd probably kill me for asking), nor can I find it in any FAQ I've read. And i dont think i will ever run into john on the street, so the only time i meet him is at gigs, where i was pleased to talk to him for a while thanks to Jordan Rudess who smuggled me into the soundcheck. Petrucci signed my guitar and took some time to tlak about LTE and stuff. hes a cool guy. so when i say John is God, man dont take it too seriuosly, and i wonder how this can really ennerve anyone? Okay, I know this is your OPINION - but I have recorded and mixed "lo-fi" recording/demos of bands and getting something to sound good on EVERY system is impossible. This is kind of the reason for a REFERENCE system. It takes a FLAT EQ look at the situation. That way it takes an AVERAGE look at everyones system. Let's say it was mixed on a NON-REFERENCE system and that system has a overly emphasized BASS RESPONSE. Well, they are going to make sure to demphasize the bass to make it sound good on this NON-REFERENCE system. Then you buy it and your system happens to have a LOW BASS RESPONSE. So now the album sounds very tiny on your system. By mixing it on a REFERENCE (Flat EQ) system, they find a nice area that won't OVER emphasize or demphasize any frequency. However, some systems just plain suck. Should they tailor to those shitty systems so you can be happy and the people that PAY for good sound go "What the fuck is this shit?". Screw that, anyone that doesn't buy something better than an AIWA minisystem has already said "I don't care how it sounds", so they shouldn't be complaining when it sounds like shit on their system. However, I don't think the complaining on the mix of FII is worthless. If you have noticed something and can specifically point it out, you are atleast giving the band feedback on what you (the buying public) like and don't like. I don't see anything wrong with that. But if you are just going to say "FII sucks dick - its not as good as Awake - Shirley did a terrible job", you aren't really giving anybody anything to work with except a headache. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Aug 1998 17:16:44 -0700 From: Carol Dellinger To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: I'm confused! please advise! Okay, I'm not gonna argue if posture makes or breaks a good/bad drummer. I am a guitarist and it took me a good 3 years to realize how I slumped over my guitar when I practiced. I didn't realize it until I moved into an apartment with the sliding closet doors that are huge mirrors. I noticed then and at the same time was going to MI where an instructor gave a VERY good lesson on posture and technique for guitar. He found out the hard way (surgery). I did notice a big improvement in my playing by doing what he said because my mind didn't have to worry about "pains" anymore. My question is this: Can someone tell me a book or website that they have found gives a very detailed look into the posture of drummers. My little brother is starting on the drums and I want to make sure he doesn't find himself with pains before he is even 20. Reading some of the previous post, it seems there is quite a bit to it. Try playing 2 or 3 45 minute sets a night with bad posture and I'll bet you'll have a hard time getting out of bed the next day. I have gone to a drum throne with a back support on it and I've found it has greatly improved my posture at the set. Now (mainly on double bass sections) I find I'm pushing myself up into the back support. If you can afford one, I suggest you check it out. I will offer my opinions and thoughts though :) I use different postures depending on what I happen to be playing at the time. ie: slow steady double bas grooves, I sit nice and straight, for times when I'm playing quick accents, 32nd, 64th note type double bass accents, I tend to lean forward and yes, slump a bit, because I use ankle power rather than the complete set of legs... A good practice to help with strain is to raise or lower the throne an inch or so periodically. I have treid this when a while back a doctor suggested it that I know... It has made a difference:) hope it helps!! I like all of the "eras" and I think the use of the term "mature" to describe music is gayer than a hootenanny (TM).. Your use of this term could be translated to "I like the music they played with Sammy better than the music they played with DLR and Gary." >but let's face the real truth >(Eddie) Randy Rhodes did it first!! I am a fan of both Randy and Eddie but IMO Eddie is clearly the better and more inventive guitarist. I think Randy had the potential to be his equal, but his life was sadly cut short as he was approaching his prime. Watch Ed's solo in, for example, the "Live Without a Net" video. There wasn't a guitarist then or now who could play like that (except Ed). While he is not the fastest or most technical guitarist on the planet, Ed's style is inimitable. >but I must say that III sucked I disagree - I think it's a pretty strong album, albeit shocking at first listen (to someone who has listened to all the other VH stuff in the past).. >Eddie looks burnt I just saw 2 shows on the "III" tour and Eddie (and the whole band) were absolutely on fire.. Totally psyched, Eddie was jumping all over the place and showing no evidence of hip problems. His guitar playing was also top-notch (as expected). Alex looks aged with the neck brace and all but hey, this is music not a fucking fashion show.. >Overall, VH isn't the same. Nope, they're older and the music that Ed is writing is definitely a little different. >VH was better with a musician at the helm instead >of a vocalist. Are you implying that Gary is writing all the music these days? Ed is, and always has been, the music writer for VH. Attribute any change in style to him, for better or worse. I guess it will always be the case with any long-lived band that has distinct musical phases that there will be fans who prefer one phase to another and who cast negative aspersions on the less-preferred eras. I can get a lot out of each phase of Van Halen, and appreciate the differences as well as the similarities (Ed's ass-kicking guitar). I encourage anyone who is a fan of the guitar and who can be open-minded about hard rock music to give III several listens. It won't hit you immediately, but there is a good deal of depth on the album. Its diversity may also make it hard to comprehend on first listen. I don't have an Aiwa Minisystem, but I do have a Sony Mini. :-) And I assure you that I only have this one because I don't have enough money to buy a better stereo. In fact, I think that I should win the lottery to buy the sound system that I really want. :-) And given that I live outside the US, things here cost a great deal more than what they cost for you (approx. two or three times the price you'd pay -- including CDs, unfortunately). But I do try the CDs I have on many different stereos/CD players to know how they sound before claiming that the production is bad (and to see the differences of imaging).
