It's meant to be extremely good and some people on the jam have it so maybe they could say more since I am interested in either buying it or trying to get a local library to get in, even though I don't play drums I'm interested from a composing point of view. But the latter has nothing to do with the former. I am a HUGE Extreme fan, but Gary's voice has none of the dynamics on "3" that it had on any Extreme album. It's flat, raspy, and one-dimensional. Musically, this album sounds like it could have been released right after VHII, which is NOT a compliment. The songs show none of the maturity that was apparent on the last two albums. As for seeing VH live, I've seen them four times, and only on one of those occasions was it a noteworthy performance. The F.U.C.K. tour was great, with excellent song selection and some interesting covers. But on the Balance tour, it was like hearing VH's greatest hits, plus some new material. Plus, due to the band's injuries, there was little movement on stage by either Eddie or Alex. I have never been to a worse concert by a major name band save one, Aerosmith. After seeing VH at Great Woods in 1996, I vowed never to pay for a concert ticket of theirs again. BUT: Then Gary joined the band and before I heard the new album, I had high hopes. Then the band said on the tour they would play a lot of old stuff. I thought, maybe it would be worth it. One listen to How Many Say I solidified my earlier stance. This band is not worth a $30 ticket. As for Eddie being the reigning king of rock guitar: no way. I was an ardent fan since my early teens, and looked forward to every new album. That is far from the case now. I haven't played that disc since the first month I had it, and unlike past albums, I never bothered trying to learn any songs on this disc. The reigning king is a title I wouldn't hand out easily anymore. While Eddie may be fun to watch on stage, his playing is far from inventive anymore. Petrucci may be an incredible musician and songwriter, but he's like a statue on stage. My pick? Joe Satriani. This guy is all over the guitar and has fun doing it onstage. Its almost like he amazes himself sometimes by the way he laughs. I've been near the front at three Satch shows and still can't fathom half the stuff he does. Plus, his albums feature constantly inventive work, as in the implementing of a whammy pedal on the last two albums. While Diamond Darrell and Tommy Morello just play notes and rock the treadle, Joe actually uses it to harmonize rhythms at upper octaves (see Raspberry Jam Delta V). This is downright amazing. A near second is of course Steve Vai. His studio work is consistently progressive, but his live shows are pure primadonna work. I liked seeing him the two times I did, but if he weren't on the G3 bill, I wouldn't have paid for him a second time. But he still blows Eddie away. This was quite a mind-blower. Just an FYI. And as for the Met 1 intro being played live, I saw DT in early July of 1993 and the intro was pre-recorded. They played this as the concert opener in Agawam, MA (Riverside Park), and proceeded to play every song off I&W, plus To Live Forever, Eve, and A Fortune in Lies. Another FYI.
