The fact that Derek responded so defensively is perhaps a little unprofessional, but this IS a rock band we're talking about and he gets major style points in my opinion for having the balls to make some of the comments he did. ANYWAY, I think it was Steve Vai who said "We all have a spark of divinity in us and even if we don't outwardly display it, it can sneak into the music we make." Perhaps we should reflect on that. I think Christian was very right in his appraisal of the situation. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------- On UK: Uk is not exactly the easiest band to describe. They strike me as being both "fusiony" and "King Crimson-like." Listen and decide for yourself. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------- On FII: While I&W is no doubt a better album, I would definitely rank FII above WDADU, which in comparison seems like a cartoonish self-parody (as does AOI, unfortunately). As far as LaBrie's voice goes, I think the differences in his style are all for the better and almost relieving to hear. While DT has definitely released better examples of guitar and drum playing, I thought the keyboards (especially the solos) were outstanding and the bass playing, though less technical, had improved from previous efforts. I also doubt anyone will disagree when I say that the production is far superior to that of any previous DT albums. As far as the songs go: NM: Am I the only person who actually loves this song? YNM: Great song, if not typical DT. I admit a lingering preference for YOM. HY: I love this one. Some of Petrucci's coolest tasteful playing. JLMB: I'm lukewarm on this one. I hate MTV too, but this song is less dynamic than it could've been and the guitar/keyboard breakdown should've been louder in the mix. AL: Impressive, especially in terms of the arranging at work. BMS: Good, but perhaps it could've been more dynamic. HK: Amazing. Should've stayed part of BMS. LITS: Alright, but not striking. I've never been a KX fan either, so that might be it. TAMP: One of my favorites. Excellent arrangement, great vocals. TOT: Good, especially on a rainy day. The instrumental sections here, as on the whole disc are somewhat less riveting than on other DT stuff. (Funeral for a Friend is my favorite DT instrumental at the moment) Just my 2 cents. Should've stayed part of BMS. Here is a topic that I was waiting to be discussed here, but apparently wasn't (unless it was discussed when I was unsubscribed from the list). It seems that a lot of people prefer BMS with HK in the middle, right? So it seems (I'm *NOT* saying that everybody prefer the old version). Ok. So, why don't DT play BMS with HK in their current live shows?? I can't see problems with performing the song differently from the album version. And the fans who know this older version would be happy, I suppose. And the fans who haven't heard this older version of BMS (let's remember that not everybody is fortunate enough to have access to bootlegs) would be exposed to some "extra", different version of a DT song, giving them some diversity. And this would also be a way for the guys to avoid the "auto-pilot mode" discussed in the past jams. Another benefit of this form would be that tapers/traders would also be happy with it. :-) Just some food for thought. Or, like you Americans say, that's my 2 cents. :-) []s, Roger... -- =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Rogerio Brito - email_address_removed.br - http://www.ime.usp.br/~rbrito Undergraduate Computer Science Student - "Windows? The best CD stores are usually the most obscure. . .and have LOTS of used CDs and LOTS of metal CDs. Yeah, yeah, my point is. . . is when shopping at these stores always, always, look in the bin where they keep your favorite band's CDs. You never know what you might find. A brand new ("used" but never opened) copy of Majestic Harmonies. Recorded Live in Stockholm 10/27/93. The first 8 cuts are live and run similar to Live at the Marque only in Metropolis Pt 1, and Pull Me Under *different because of course it is live*. The other 6 are Mission Impossible, Afterlife, UaGM, WfS (inc. keyboard solo) and TtT. If this isn't enough. . . the next four cuts are from Majesty 1986: Vital Star, Another Won, Your Majesty and A Vision. The latter of the four runs for 11.16. Oh yes. It was a great day to shop for music. Did I mention that this is an absolutely awesome CD? It is. Now I can stop bugging for Majesty stuff too. This disease (if not treated properly) causes enough abdominal pressure to completely immobilize the victim from the resulting pain. Masturbation was out of the question because of the potential of over-developing his arms to the point of pushing the Korgs through the floor. I'd be a little apprehensive about shaking his hand had he chose to take matters into his own. Just kidding Derek! Hehehe I'm sorry kids, I have to defend Derek here.. If I was in the same position as he (don't get sick on me, jammers) I would do the same. I can remember in my younger years during the 70s, humping from hole to hole like a three peckered rabbit. Hell, if I was DTs keyboardist, they would need an additional tour bus just to haul the condoms! I do think a little more discretion was in order though... I think Korg echoes my opinions best on the morality issue, though Calvin had some very valid points, as did others. I think about my daughter (two weeks from her 16th birthday) dating someone like Axl Rose and think... Not a chance, bub. He would quickly join the Cobain ranks. The headlines would read "Axl Rose chokes on own testicles" Would I let her date Derek? Not a chance. And I like Derek. :) I have a great deal of respect for Derek, as I do with every member of DT. (Ahhh huh huh, I said "member") I do hold them to higher standards than most musicians. Is that fair? Damn right! I have the ultimate choice on who I listen to, and if I think a musician is helping to degrade society further by using music as a vehicle to reflect their own lack of moral standards, I WON'T BUY IT. There is enough dickheads out there supporting maggots like (insert lame band lame here)---------------------- I know what you're thinking... He just contradicted himself with the morality- vs.- "I'd do the same as Derek" statement. I was in my teens back in the 70s, I grew up. Besides, that was the decade of "free love." It's no surprise to me that there is a shit load of lava lamps on stage. I'll shut up now :) -- See ya, AL... I found this to be an amazing question. Every CD DT comes out with is different from the one previous, I can't find trend in much that they do. WD&DU was hard to listen to. . . then it grew on me. I&W was just incredible, technically incredible, that CD makes you listen to its intricacies. Awake just shattered me within the first two songs, I stay pretty much dumbfounded throughout Erotomania, Mirror, Lie. . SDV, and love every minute of it. Does anyone know what to expect from them on their next album? Not a chance!!! Isn't that the greatest feeling? I agree completely FII has some seriously tough competition as will all of their new releases. Personally, I think they do very well on their own and don't need any help on their courses. _____Nikki_______________________ ~~Through Nature's Inflexible Grace~~ ~~I'm Learning to Live --J. Empty Tremor have produced the album by them self and it's amazing because they where young teenagers. Look at Dream Theater. How much money have they spent to work with Kevin "suckman" Sheirly and what's the result ->> pure alternative sound. Falling Into Infinity is the worst DT album. Here in German magazins it becomes the lowest notes, Dream Theater ever have become. Actually, I'm in more than 6 maling lists and every one is flaming about Dream Theater's SELL OUT WITH FALLING INTO INFINITY and that's the truth. I always thought, Dream Theater are agianst confirmity but Falling Into... sounding total 90's like, the songs are not complex and this sucks. When Dream And Day Unite, Images And Words and Awake are much much better than Falling Into Infinity. The same gose to Rush. In the 70's they've made great music. In the 80's they went to radio commercial songs. In the 90's (Test For The Echo) they went alternative. But you all rave about them because you are blind and will love eveyrthing they make. What about if Rush will play on a Nirvana tribute ? >The band itself...eh. It's hard to be too harsh because they obviously >have talent but I get almost nothing out of listening to this music. WAKE UP. 1994 (Awake) is over. Now you have prog killers like You Not me, Burning My Soul, Take Away My pain, and Anna Lee. Ha ha ha. You can't compare Falling Into Infinity with masterworks like Symphony X's Divine Wings Of Tragedy or Empty Tremor's Apocolokyntosys. Bands like Empty Tremor, Power Of Omen or Symphony X are making much better music than Falling Into Infinity. I just hope that DT will not end like Queensryche or Metallica.
