AL might have been composed. depends on who was the true influence for the song in the first place. if it was DerShe (that abbreviation sounds like some sort of wussy synth-pop 80's fantasy movie character name. then again, i liked those movies) that came up with the vast majority of the ideas for the song as far as the music goes, then methinks that it would have been something that might have been dropped. if i remember correctly, labrie came up with the lyrics. so at least the whole concept of the song was there. however, whenever i ponder the possibilities that i pull the ...wait, that's primus. whenever i think of what would happen if KevMo (a much cleaner abbreviation, but no cheesy movie association. damn) wrote the song, i instantly think of wait for sleep. anna lee is perfect as a 4/4 elton johnesque thing. FII would have been drastically different with Moore (damn stupid abbreviations) on the keys. worlds different. i cannot imagine the intro to new millenium with string pads or sawsynth leads or any of the other four patches that he used. the ripping samples in lines in the sand ... rhodes pianos in hells kitchen and peruvian skies ... bloody hell, son, do you realize what you're suggesting? a complete u-haul cross-country move of the entire album. the album might have even been differently named. holy cow. a revolution. let's change the time line, build a time machine, sleep-induce Moore into staying in the band, check out the future, find out what happened, and THEN go back and put it the way it is (the way it used to be?) because gosh golly i like it. i don't think the keys would sound a lot better. i think they would sound different. i like what derek does for the group. i LOVE what derek does for the group. not just in the studio, but on stage as well. lava lamps and such. so he look like he's glam-rocking his keyboards. he has feeling and stage presence. now it's not only mike portnoy who gets all the stage attention. i first saw the video for pull me under years ago and thought "damn, the only person smiling is the drummer. the guitarist gets close but that's more of a 'i'm ripping a lead' mouth-grind than a smile'... the vast majority of the group were very serious into their music. even live for the images and words tour. so, derek comes into the picture. audience rapport. jokes on stage. and the final blow: john myung spoke to me after the concert. i say to you this: his influence is essential to making the group work. (: did i like kevin moore? yes. did he rock my socks and blow me away with his work up to and including awake? oh yeah. do i like derek? unquestionably. can i wait till the live album and the next studio album? oh hell no. You're the first to get on the "everyone has the right to their opinion" bus and drive it around telling people to be nice to each other when using battery operated love devices... so I was shocked when I read your last post. I know you have an unreasonable hatred for all things rap, to the extent that you won't even give them a chance (at least, that's what you said on IRC one night) but I think it's going a bit too far to say that someone remixing a song is bullshit, by default. I will agree that what Puff Daddy does to the songs he remixes is not a complex process, nor do I think it requires a great artistic zeal to achieve. I still disagree with those of you who say that what he does is wrong... that's YOUR little ego/pretension thing going on. If someone else, educated or not, likes it, then it's fine by me, musically. This Rush thing isn't even the same thing. This ain't that easy. What did you say when you heard the remix (if you heard it) of the second track of APSoG? You're a good player... I think one listen and you will agree that you couldn't have created that if you wanted to right now. I would appreciate it if you would chill a little bit. I don't like it when people tell me that I'm wrong for the music I like... I suppose, though, that it at least proves I have my own tastes and I'm not just sucking the dicks of those who feel qualified to set their standards for me. One last thing... some numb-nuts decided to respond to Calvin's post that LitS is by far the best song (I totally agree, BTW) on the album, by categorically explaining why it isn't... and some other butt-plug decided to explain how LTE is infinitely superior to AoI... do you people recognize that people can have legitimate musical tastes that don't directly coincide with your own? I have that, and it never fails to blow me away. I got the released version when it came out, i've listened to it a lot, but there was always something about it, almost JAZZY, that I couldn't really get into. I never understood what the huge deal was, until I got(thanks kai) a copy of the vocal audition tape, with a much older version of the song. This version of the song was so powerful it didn't just kick my ass, it actually ripped my head off and crapped down my throat. I have no idea how much of the old version kevin was responsible for or how much of the new version derek is responsible for. My understanding is that mike wrote the whole thing either way. I suspect kevin didn't have a whole lot to do with the song, but it wouldn't surprise me if derek played a big part in the revision. it definitly has his style. I would love to find out who is responsible for how much of both versions, if anyone knows. ................................................................. "The One Who ..." is also incredible. Even with Charlie's voice, this song is superb. About Derek vs Kevin : Both are great players. I don't think you can really compare them to each other because of different style and also the fact that DT are making different music than Images And Words back 1992. The problem with Derek is that he always is too low in the mix (FII). If you listen to the making of FII CD, you can hear Derek all around without using headphones. Just listen to track 13 (Lines In the Sand) and compare it with the end mix. Live he kicks ass. Anyway, Kevin Moore has left DT because he wanted to do something else. Actualy, I've read that he wanted to do aynthing by him self and making easier music and less difficult. His work on APSOG is good but nothing special with the exception of Part 8. And Chroma Key is not prog metal at all. I've heard 2-3 Platypus songs and there is song called "PlatOpus" which is awesome. Derek is god. If he only wouldn't use the same lead sound agian and agian. I was in a bad mood last night and got carried away (we can all do that once in awhile can't we?) :) Poor Puff was just a scapegoat to vent my frustrations. Next time I'll pick on someone omni-abhorrant like Bill Gates. :) My whole point was not about my conjured dislike of remixes ("?" I don't hate remixes, well, not all anyway). My whole beef was that Neil got all P.O.'d when he'd heard about Dream Theater, Fates, etc. doing an honest tribute album, but it's alright for this guy (bravo to him if he DOES even like Rush) to go ahead and do his own tribute/remix and the band's OK with that. I just don't get it. They said that they didn't like Working Man because Magna Carta marketed tribute albums (although the players were sincere), but for all I know, Puff doesn't give a shit about Rush and just thought the song had a cool beat and used it, but that's OK. :P I did listen to the remixes and thought they weren't bad. They just added a new dimension to an old favorite. Nothing wrong with that. It's Rush that I'm bitching about. "Shake what yo mama gave you...
