Even some Gilmour - led Floyd had some time changes in it. On the Turning Away has measures of 3/4, 4/4, and 5/4. I'm >thinking of Symphony X and Empty Tremor, but I'll have to order them through >CDNow and they are imports. Well I have not heard Empty Tremor, so I can't talk about them. But I can talk about Cliche X, err I mean Symphony X. Yes, this band is talented, but I feel they represent pretty much everything that is wrong with the progressive/power metal genre. The lyrics sound like they came out of a Castlevainia video game. They use the word, "t'was" on numerous occasions. And who could forget song titles like "Of Sins and Shadows," "The Witching Hour," and "The Eyes of Medusa." While Symphony X has technical ability, their use of it is horrible. Michael Romeo is superfuckin'fast on his axe. But his articulation, phrasing, and accentuation are horrible. Not to mention the songwriting is weak. I own the 'Divnine Wings of Tragedy' and if this CD had any more holes in it, it would taste great between a few pieces of bread and ham. All of the previous is IMHO. /me puts on flame retardent suit and throws more fuel in the flame thrower. Oliver is currently touring with Blind Guardian in Europebut only as a session musician. Grabbing the opportunity to talk about my second favourite band of all time: If you are a JRR Tolkien fan and have especially liked "Silmarillion" get NiME. The music is more than excellent, and most importantly the Guardians managed to get the book's atmosphere out greatly and dress it with melody. The drumming is excellent and so are the vocals/choirs. Flemming Rasmussen is the producer and generally I can find no flaw inthe album. I managed to find an album that made me take LTE out of the CD player at last!:) Careful though...It is not DT stuff. It is power metal from Germany kinda like Helloween for those who dont know, only a bit more progressive, heavier, more melodic and excellent sound... A must buy for metal fans,Tolkien fans.... The TriAxis "recto" channel sounds NOTHING like a recto. If Mesa can't get a pre/power amp combo to sound like a Mesa head, there must be something to the whole HEAD thing. I asked a Mesa rep and I received the best "theory" from him so far as to why a head sounds different from a pre/power amp. I want to say why a head sounds better, but that is a matter of opinion. His theory was a head sound DIFFERENT because the power amp and pre amp section of the head share the same power supply - as opposed to a pre/power combo. This to me has been the only thought out reason of why a head sounds different. This Mesa rep also does some amazing amp modification work so he is more than just a SALES GUY. I was wondering what others have heard as to the reason for a difference. The basic difference I always hear is that heads seem to have better definition - especially for lower string fast picking. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1998 22:05:54 -0700 (MST) From: Mad dog To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Boredom and an excel spreadsheet can yeild some strange results... You say that as if it's a bad thing... Four band families account for 24.8% [1] (by CD running time) of my CD collection. Each of the parent/main band is **'d below. ABBA - Tori Amos - Bad Company - Bad Religion - The Beatles - David Bowie - The Chemical Brothers - The Choir - The Crystal Method - **The Cure - The Dandy Warhols - The Eagles - Peter Gabriel - Garbage - The Jesus and Mary Chain - Mike Knott (etc) - Led Zeppelin - Live - Love and Rockets - Lush - Moby - Nine Inch Nails - Oasis - Beth Orton - Pearl Jam - The Prayer Chain - Queen - Radio Head - Ride - **The 77's - Simon and Garfunkel - Smashing Pumpkins - **Spacemen 3 (etc) - The Violet Burning. Actually, now that I look at it, I have more Marillion + Fish than any other band family, but they're prog, so they're not listed. For those interested (ie no-one) DT would be number 5 by CD running time (I think), but probably would be #6 if I counted cassettes. A "Mad dog shaven head bottle boy Freak" aka John Haveman "Im Anfang war das Wort?" ... "Nein. Im Anfang war die Tat." Goethe's Faust I - Scene III - as quoted in Phillip K. Dick's _Valis_ [1] This number is actually now a bit outdated. I've recently gotten a few new albums (one each by Curve, LSU and U2) but haven't had a chance to update fully. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Jul 1998 00:13:25 -0500 From: "Brian Hayden" To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Deep Purple, Savatage Boots, OAN Message-ID: Responding to the message of from email_address_removed: > > > >That would be Parallels, and it's actually not their latest. Sorry to resirect this thread, but you guys have the > knowledge. Wellness. > Matt B I can ABSOLUTELY tell the difference between a TriAxis and a Dual Rectifier. So much so that I went into the Mesa Boogie store to buy the TriAxis - and after MUCHO testing - walked out with a Dual Rectifier. When it comes down to PURE TONE - the Dual Rectifier (to me) is far superior. When it comes to flexibility (changing to many different preprogrammed sounds), the Triaxis is superior. I am a tone first, flexibility second type of guy. To me, if I don't have the tone I want - I don't care how many different versions of "almost good tone" I have. I think the Dual Rectifier is a superior Crunch rhythm machine to just about anything I have ever heard. And let's face it - most of what you play is rhythm - and usually crunch at that. I haven't been able to achieve a "perfect" solo tone, but that doesn't mean I can't get a very good solo tone out of it. In reality, you can coax just about any tone out of the Rectifier - it is just done through toggle switches - so it isn't exactly the DREAM live amp if it is all you have. I would like to hear some others opinions on what type of LEAD tone they are getting from their amp. BTW, the Triaxis does have an EXCELLENT clean tone. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1998 23:07:10 -0700 From: "Alex Smith" To: "YTSEJAM" Subject: RUSH Message-ID: <01bdafb6$cd92caa0$message_id_removed> hi, what are the tracklists on the Rush Cygnus and Critical Mass albums? thanks, Alex Smith email_address_removed http://www.azstarnet.com/~bacchus/rush/ "Out for my own, out to be free One with my mind, they just can't see No need to hear things that they say Life is for my own to live my own way See them try to bring the hammer down No damn chains can hold me to the ground." -Metallica ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Jul 1998 03:17:03 -0300 (EST) From: Rogerio Brito To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Deep Purple, Savatage Boots, OAN Message-ID: On Tue, 14 Jul 1998, Brian Hayden wrote: [Geometry on your Jam] > > I guess you are referring to Purpendicular and their latest Abandon. > > Okay, ignore me, I'm stupid. :-P Parallels? Yes, I think we are. No one asked what our fav's were, they asked what our "non-Prog" fav's were. I primarily listen to prog so a trip to the CD rack was necessary to refresh my memory. I have 374 discs to go through, I don't have them all committed to memory. My vinyl collection tops off somewhere just over 1200. Some of those have not seen the platter in over 2 decades. Just be thankful I didn't dig out those. That alone would have toped Alan Estrada's characters per year in one post. I have a lot of great music. I also have a fair share of stuff that flat out sucks. You just don't always know until you buy. I only keep the stuff to maintain a (I hate this word)> diverse collection.
