Put down your flame throwers full of Deer Park's napalm. Kirby's got an idea! Well, not the parakeet Kirby, but... well... I know, I know, someone (several someones?) brought the idea up a month or two ago, tossed it around, and never organized anyone. Well, for the Texas Ytsejammer organizer, I thought, hey! I can do this! So here's the deal. Everybody send one e-mail each day to MTV requesting the HOLLOW YEARS video. Anyone reading their digests today (or tomorrow) should e-mail them and start the trickle of requests going, but let's shoot for Thursday being the mass onslaught of DT reqests. After all, it's all about popularity. When you request the video, mention something about DT, what a great show Total Request is (ha!), *anything* to get DT on there. >:-} Also, tell your friends to request it, and don't forget about multiple e-mail addresses that you might own. Hell, if a bunch of ppl on the Internet got Hank the Angry, Drunken Dwarf voted as most beautiful person of 1998 (beauty is, of course, on the inside!), then we can get DT on MTV. E-mail them at email_address_removed or call them at 1-800-DIAL MTV. Def Leppard was a fav several years ago. I just couldn't admit to that. Well the cats out of the bag now. I seen DL live on TV a back about 1988, I thought they were horrible. The ol' lady (AKA The Warden) is a huge Def Leppard fan. Back in 1990 or so she talked me into taking her to a DL concert at the Minnesota State Fair. I just assumed they would suck, much to my surprise they were really good. As an added bonus the supporting act was Ugly Kid Joe! They were fun. The other band (?) I failed to mention was LTE. Forgive me if I assumed that everyone on the jam universally agreed that LTE was AWESOME. I just felt like that would be like saying "Dream Theater Rules." Redundant? OK, here goes... ahem. Having finally given it a full listen, I find it to be better than any of my expectations. I would have thought that getting together four such musicians, they would have just made excuses to have big solo opportunities and written some really drawn out virtuoso pieces. Not so. There is quite a bit of "soulful" playing on here and evidence of real songwriting. I really underestimated these four guys. I can't say I have a favorite track, though Osmosis stands out the most to me. The album is so unified and flows really well. Chalk me up with the amazed-this-was-done-in-a-week group. The thing I'm most amazed with is that an album done in this manner usually contains at least one song that is "filler", or not of album quality (i.e. You Not Me...:) ). There isn't anything like that on here, and Three Minute Warning is the first jam track of its kind that I can actually listen to all the way through. Overall, this was definitely worth the $15, even at a time where this type of music is secondary in my interests. I truly believe that any DT fan would appreciate this album. Unless you like DT because you think KJLB has a cute ass... :) Andrew ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1998 16:50:57 +0100 From: NGA To: "'email_address_removed'" Subject: Solitude Aeturnus Message-ID: Hi all just the usual reviews and a couple of comments about what's been going on here lately. SOLITUDE AETURNUS - Adagio So American bands can play world-class doom, after all! This is almost the perfect doom album that would also make metal purists and prog freaks sit up and listen. The typical doom elements are there - down-tuned axes, depressing lyrics, slow grinding riffs, but these guys also demonstrate how to use a very solid and precise rhythm section in conjunction with two excellent guitarists, all topped of by an excellent clean vocal performance - no cookie monster stuff or grunts here. Touches of Morbid Angel come through, but these guys are leagues better. Some nice tempo changes keep you on your toes. My favourite track "Mental Pictures" makes me think of old Metallica - you could easily imagine James Hetfield singing. The cover version of Black Sabbath's "Heaven And Hell" is good, but the acoustic song "The Fall" isn't, which means one point less than top marks. Also nice to hear a doom band that doesn't use bombastic keyboards or a violin for a change. This album is a must for those of you with darker souls. 9/10 I also got the mini CD by Within Temptation yesterday. Three new songs so far, and if the whole of the new album is like this, then I will be a very happy camper later. Overall, this Dutch band has become harder, especially the riffing and the drums, although the music remains very symphonic and majestic - sort of like Orphanage meets Theatre Of Tragedy. And, of course, Sharon den Adel's crystal-clear angelic vocals continue to give me goose bumps in places where I never had goose bumps before. AS Oliver Twist said - please sir, I want some more! (Compulsory minimal Dream Theater content: three members of Within Temptation list Dream Theater as one of their favourite bands.) To the guy who complained about Tool mainly standing around when they play live - go see a cock rock band like Van Halen if you want to see some Spandax-clad fairies pirouetting about the stage. However, if you want to hear some of the best music I've heard for years being played excellently and very intensely in a live situation, then go and see Tool at an indoor venue. I caught them at Cologne, Germany last spring and it was one of the best and most enjoyable gigs I've been to in my 27 years of going to concerts. stay safe and happy listening Neil Gallop (nga@software-ag.de) Currently playing: Frank Zappa - Strictly Commercial "Evolution did not end with us growing thumbs" - Bill Hicks ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1998 12:04:46 -0400 (EDT) From: Christian P Kremo To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: YTSEJAM digest 4061 Message-ID: > > Would anyone (Marcel, Nick, Bahr, Felix?) care to post > > comparing and contrasting the currently available FII cd boots > > both for sound quality and track listing? Nicky B's Fasten Your Seatbelts > 3. Bahr's Welcome to the Wasteland > 4. OAN's Static Progress > 5. In Germany 4/18/97 > 6. Others??? 1. I traded with Marcel for this show and like all of his recordings, 'De Maaspoort' is very clean sounding, and if I recall correctly, it also has Trial of Tears from the 4/16/97 performance. (I think it also has Anna Lee, with Mike singing the first few lines, but that might be another show I'm thinking of...) It's good to have. 2. My Fasten Your Seatbelts can be sampled at http://web.mit.edu/bogie/ I took 3 songs (JLMB, NM, & Ytsejam (FYS debut)) off this show and made MP3s out of them. I will let those speak for the quality. The show was recorded with Core Sound Stealth Cardioids, so the quality has to be good. :) Also, I threw on demos of 5 FII songs, which are the best sounding versions I've heard. (Not the quality of those MP3s floating around on the net.) 3. Bahr has the only soundboard show out of the bunch. (Just wait until I make the House of Blues show available [possibly on silvers, bwahahaa :) ]) I'm assuming the quality is that of the HoB show originally broadcast in May, which means that it's great. 4. & 5. I haven't heard OAN's Static Progress or In Germany, so I can't give a review for those, but from what I've heard, Static Progress is a great show to have. If I were you, I would buy all of 1 through 4 because you would get a taste of all of the FII tour. :) (Of course, that might take a chunk out of your wallet...but if you were a _true_ fan, you'd do it! (j/k) I would also like to clarify something here: Adam Pye stated: > A couple of notes. "FYS" isn't a full show, but I've heard the sound >quality is excellent. Fasten Your Seatbelts _is_ a complete show. The fact that it was only 100 minutes long doesn't make it incomplete. The owners of the Roxy (the club DT played on) made DT shorten its set so that they could get their Saturday night clubbers in at 11. So, in order to compensate for the lack of Scarred, ACOS bits, & Nightmare Cinema (yes, there were going to play it in Boston - fuck the Roxy owners), I added 5 FII demos. The 2 CDs are packed with material. Ok, hope I helped. Take care, Nick Bogovich 31608 Records PS - The set list project is coming along nicely!
