Thought I'd mention I might be slow on updates over the next few days. My ISP has been under attack by so called "nukers" for the last two weeks ! The first week was ok, but the last week has been fucking unbearable... They're attacking all of the users through the routers or something. I can only browse websites for 1-2 minutes before I start to get timeouts all over the place ! So much for checking sites for information. I can't even get on IRC anymore these days. Same thing for AOL's AIM and ICQ... Today it took me over an hour to get all my email... Things kept getting stuck, after which I got every email all over again (and I get a *lot* of mail). So if it seems like I'm being a slacker, you know what's up. In the meantime, check out Elektra's DT page... Someone just told me it says the 2CD *and* home video will be released in October ! Can't go there myself, for reasons stated above... Hmmm, I wonder how long it's going to take me to succesfully email this note... Well, the reason is obvious...they don't sell as well as popular recordings, so they don't spend as much time with the sonics as they might. The rule of thumb is a good one, but, in addition to the two mentioned above, you can mention the LA Philharmonic, the Cleveland Symphony (under Szell, in particular), and the Boston Symphony. You can make a good case for a few of the other larger symphonies -- San Francisco and Houston, in particular, have made a pretty credible case for being a part of that first tier. Though with a lot of more modernist pieces, you may want to simply find what group recorded the piece first...there's generally a lot of involvement with the public premere of a piece, and it isn't always with one of the big 6 or 8 groups. Message-ID: If you ask me what the best DT boots are, they are few and far between. Many of my own don't qualify because IMHO a top-tier boot must come from the soundboard, at least predominantly. Here's my (brief) listing of the DT boots no DT fan should be without (in no order): 1. Lost In the Sky/Milan '93 version - soundboard, Images tour 2. Mind Control - soundboard, Awake tour (PPV broadcast) 3. A Kick Into a Dream - soundboard, Awake tour (FM) 4. Stream of Consciousness - soundboard, FII tour (webcast) 5. Acoustic Dreams - (unplugged in Europe, from master tape) 6. When Dream and Today Unite - various soundboard + 2 audience 7. Precious Things - various soundboard + 1 audience 8. Spinning Years 2 - MP3 comp of some of the best sb boots 9. Perfect Dreams - two Images sb shows, very clear, but boring. X - hon. mention - Uncovered, but a lot of this is available legit. X - hon. mention - Lords of Sound (FM, slightly less clear than LITS) If I were to then list the best audience boots of all time, which would arguably make up the second-tier of great DT boots (in no order), they would be... 1. The Dance of Eternity (NY '93 with ACOS) 2. Static Progress - FII tour. Clear is clear. 3. Carpe Diem (Marcel Berkhout version) - ACOS tour. 4. Caught in Amsterdam '97 - FF96 tour. 5. The Darkest of Winters - HFTH tour. 6. A Kind of Homecoming - FII tour. Don't pass up these just because they're audience. Audience DAT recordings can be QUITE listenable on a good stereo. It's not the same as a direct board feed, but it's usually as good as it gets. There's also "another" second tier: the demos/outtakes/oddities discs. These are neither better nor worse than the audience shows. Content is the main attraction. Again, in no order: 1. Subconscious Gold 2. Antiquities 3. Scenes from a Memory 4. Mosaic 5. Guitar Talkin' 6. Falling into Obscurity 7. Seven Wonders - MP3 disc full of this stuff 8. Instru Mental 2 9. Instru Mental 10. Majesty 1986: the Official Demo And there you have it. Discuss. I contend that virtually every other DT boot is skippable. Including such soundboard shows as Tap the Rockies, which is not only incomplete but unnecessary since Mind Control and AKIAD are readily available. -- - Mike Bahr - Prism Records - remove ANTISPAM in my address to reply - Hardcore fan of Dream Theater, King's X, Rush (the band), and more!!! - Magic: the Gathering "Duelists' Convocation Level 2 Certified Judge" - d u r n i k @ g o o d n e t . c o m - http://www.goodnet.com/~durnik/ - If it's nae Scottish, it's CRAP! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Jul 1998 14:35:54 -0700 From: "Pat Reyes" To: Subject: Mesa/Boogie for sale Message-ID: <000d01bda926$22de7e60$message_id_removed> This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_0008_01BDA8EB.61691720 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable If anyone in the SF bay area is looking to buy a used Mesa recto head = and cab, please mail me. -Pat ------=_NextPart_000_0008_01BDA8EB.61691720 Content-Type: text/html; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

Mary QoS was held under house arrest for many years by one Tudor monarch [Elizabeth I?] because that monarch feared that rivals would use Mary QoS as a vehicle to take the throne of England. the whole catholic [Mary] v. protestant [Henry VIII, Elizabeth] thing was important also as each religion fought for dominance. I've got the FII tab book and aparently all of the album version of LITS is on a 7-string which explains the growl of that song. Oh and by the way tuning your 2nd string to "h" does sound cool as you already know since you already have your 2nd string tuned to "h". "h" is the german name for the note B natural and B is Bb, don't ask me why. But because of this JS Bach was able to spell his last name in notes in one of compositions, clever eh! On a different note, in the DT FAQ I notice there is still no mention between the links between Just Let Me Breathe and TTT and WFS/LTL. The Just close your mind etc (opposite to TTT) and the musical reference throughout and use as the last phrase of the JLMB which although note the same notes is very similar to the main theme of WFS. In WFS the pedal note is B where as in JLMB it is E (well in the upper guitar part it is). Simon Christie ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 4042 **************************
