Message-ID: >If you didn't notice, Damon's point of view on the current topic was >totally valid. Sounds like you're the one who has a problem with Damon >being blind Jon. I promised I wouldn't get back into this topic, but I lied. :) Yes, Damon's point of view was very valid, but the way he presented it was not. Basically he called people that don't make sure their web pages are perfectly Lynx viewable assholes and that they "have a problem." (I can't believe _web pages_ are such a damn big deal. Jeezus.) I'm sorry if my level of political correctness is not up to standard, but had he vented his opinion in a somewhat reasonably mature manner I would have said "you've got a point" and left it at that. It's not gonna make me design two versions of web pages, but yes, it's valid. But "take (insert modern web technique here) and fuck it" sounds like a reply from a whiny junior-high kid. That's what I took exception to. That and the fact that apparently since I make modern web pages with graphics I either can't read or am too lazy to read. I mean, that's just ridiculous. I did have respect for Damon since he seems to do extremely well with his blindness, but when I see a post like that it really reduces that respect. So here's my bottom line on the subject (since I appear to have started it by saying I didn't like text browers - you'd think I said blind people should be outlawed on the net or something). Yes, Damon's point was very valid (once you got rid of the cursing and name calling), but I (and I think most web authors) simply dont' have time to cater to every unbelievably small faction of the web going world. I wish I did, but it's just not feasible... That was my last word on it. If you'd like to bash/flame/whine/name-call at me anymore please do it in private email so we don't all get yelled at by Skadz... Take care all... __________________________________________________ Adam Pye alpineone(-at-)mindspring.com ICQ: 9382967 http://www.mindspring.com/~alpineone/tapelist.html ^ Above URL for bootlist w/ setlists __________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jun 1998 19:44:42 -0400 From: Adam Cook To: email_address_removed Subject: Berklee Summer Sessions Message-ID: Hey, Anybody else on the jam going to Berklee summer sessions in July? At first I wasn't sure what the author (Edward Macan) meant by "progressive rock" so I look at the back and see such names as Yes, Genesis, ELP, Pink Floyd, and King Crimson.I've only begun reading the book today but it sounds quite interesting giving the reasons for the formation of prog rock, and the cultural implications of it. It covers as well the many elements of prog rock such as the lyrics, music, and cover art. There's also a chapter dedicated to the analysis of 4 prog rock pieces: ELP: "tarkus" Yes: "close to the edge" Genesis: "firth or fifth" Pink Floyd: "wish you were here" Has anyone mentioned this book on the jam before? I've been off and on so I may have missed someone mentioning it when it came out in 1997. First, Simpsons are the shit so I can't ream you too badly. ;-) But, saying 'a picture is worth a thousand words' is a bullshit argument. If there's a point to the picture, sure. But if it's there just for visual interest, as 99% of web graphics are, without contributing anything meaningful to the content of the site, then they're not worth much except extra download time. -Brian ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jun 1998 21:26:07 -0400 From: "Andrew Forcier" To: Subject: Corey Glover and more... Message-ID: Hello, Hey, whoever saw Mr. Glover on Monday, I saw him this past Saturday! Was he opening for Liquid Soul when you saw him? With the decline of Geoff Tate lately, Corey would have to rank as the best voice in rock music to me. Mike Patton's a close second though. His show was pretty good, but both keyboard player were way too far down in the mix. And his guitarist was humorous, in a bad way, IMHO. I've been stuck listening to one of those "Hits of the 70s, 80s, and 90s" stations at work and have sickeningly noticed how I know the words to too many of these songs. They've been ingrained in my head from youth! I'm growing particularly of that song whose chorus goes "There's a cold wind blowing the stars around, and I'd really love to see you tonight..." But then those Survivor songs still kick ass! I remember Jennifer Love Hewitt singing The Search Is Over on "Kids, Inc." Pre-teen years were so good... And for anyone who might care, in the depths of utter destitution, I have been enjoying my new JS6000 Custom quite a bit. Now if I can just sell my Boss ME-6 to get that Midiverb! I hate having to trade for wholesale value. Oh, and by the way Damon, I was taking that shot at America all in good fun. :) But I really do despise Seinfeld. It used to be you could see Cheers re-runs all night, now I'm stuck watching Seinfeld and Home Improvement before Prime Time rolls in. But don't worry, Melrose is back July 21!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! No, he didn't. Maybe Jon could have worded his post a bit more nicely, and made it a bit more clear that this is a serious subject, but I think his point is very valid. Let me cite an example before I get to that point: Consider Matt B. I met Matt at the pre-show party for the DT show in San Francisco last month. My friend Shawn met Matt also. There was a good group of DT fans there, and we spent quite a bit of time talking about music and other items of interest. But it wasn't until we were there for a little while that Shawn and I both realized that Matt is blind. And guess what. We both thought Matt was a cool guy before we knew he was blind, and we still thought Matt was a cool guy after we knew he was blind. Matt's blindness didn't change our opinions of him as a person. Matt didn't introduce himself by saying "Hi, I'm Matt, and I'm blind", nor did he need to. The point is, if a person has a physical handicap (whether it be blindness, deafness, or whatever), they shouldn't have to constantly remind people about their handicap in order to be treated with respect. Damon, I like reading your posts. Based on what you write, you seem like a cool guy. My opinion of you is based on your posts, not on your ability or inability to see. Therefore, you don't need to constantly remind me that you're blind, because your blindness doesn't change my opinion of you, nor does it make me more or less likely to do a favor for you. For example, if I lived near you, I would have given you a ride to the DT show simply because you needed a ride. It wouldn't have mattered WHY you needed a ride. Yet, when you asked for a ride, you said something along the lines of "please help a blind guy get a ride to the show". When you say things like that, it sounds to me like you're asking us to take pity on you because you're blind. This may not be your intent, but you sometimes can come across sounding this way. Anyway, I'm sorry if I've offended anyone. I meant this as a defense of Jon's opinion, not as a personal attack on Damon or on anyone else. I'll shut up now. But he only mentions it when it's relevant, as it was in discussing graphical vs. text-based browsers. When he was discussing keyboards with people, I don't recall him mentioning blindness. > For example, if I lived near you, I would have given you a ride to > the DT show simply because you needed a ride. When you say things like that, it sounds to me like > you're asking us to take pity on you because you're blind. I think it was a valid way to ask that question. He can't drive, so he's asking for a ride. And yes, maybe people could go a little more out of their way than they would with a person who does have the option of driving themselves. It seems reasonable to me, anyway. -Brian ------------------------------ End of YTSEJAM Digest 4008 **************************
