I would love to hear how others came to know and love DT as well. I went to college in the mid 80's and followed all types of heavy metal, Tesla, Queensryche Metallica, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, and all the other popular metal bands during that time period. I was intrigued about a "new" band called Dream Theater. The radio stations played PMU quite a bit, so I purchased I&W on cassette. I never really went past that song and passed them off as a 1 hit type of band. I didn't get into the rest of the songs on the cassette. In my job, I came across a pre-release version of Awake. I listened to it but again at the time it wasn't my cup of tea. A year or so later, I came across a pre-release version of ACOS. Something must have happened in my musical tastes or there was a calling of sorts which drew me to this music. I absolutely loved this song. I listened to it day and night, non-stop. These guys were amazing. I went back to I&W and Awake and was again amazed. How did I miss this before. I waited and waited and waited (like everyone else) for FII to finally be released. I instantly love the cd. I saw them in concert at 1st Avenue in Minneapolis in November. They were incredible! I also was able to meet them. I thought I had died and went to heaven! Thanks to everybody that attended and also to the Theater of Dreams guys (Roots & Denis) as well as all the other fan club dudes. It was all captured on tape (beautifully, I must add) by Kevin Shirley for the forthcoming Live album. A film crew was there as well, so hopefully we will be able to include it on another possible long-form home video.... Tomorrow, we will also record & film the "extra long DT extravaganza" in Paris (3 hrs, 4 hrs???) for the live album & possible home video.... I'll post a set list list for that in the days following the gig... In a more detailed fashion: you own the medium that carries that intellectual property, but you don't own the intellectual work itself. Only the author does. Wouldn't this show in and of itself make a great video? And here's the pitch to sell it to the record company - think about how many bands break by releasing an acoustic version of one of their songs. The Black Crowes didn't really get huge until they released that video version of "She talks to angels"... Tesla got huge publicity for that video version of "Signs"... so wouldn't it stand to reason that releasing a video version of "Take away my pain" (or hell, maybe even "Bad") would do wonders for our boys? Plus, the video footage is already shot, so production costs would be lower than for a normal video (I'm assuming). It might be a great way to get "the masses" turned on to DT. And besides, given the fact that there's an existing strong fan base, it's not like the video won't sell enough to be profitable even if any singles from it aren't hits. Just my 2 pence. See if you notice the ACOS reference. While "Don't Drink the Water" reveals a newfound declarative power, "Pig" offers the fullest realization of the most enduring theme in Dave Matthews's oeuvre-what he refers to as his "seize-the-day songs." This gather-ye-rosebuds-while-ye-may trope goes back to the first album's DMB army battle cry "Tripping Billies," with its chorus "Eat drink and be merry / For tomorrow we'll die." But on "Pig" he manages something surprisingly stirring and eloquent, with buoyant dynamics and William Blake-esque lyrics like "Looking at blood...deep and sweet within / Pouring through our veins...moving wine to tears." "The earlier records were more Lollipop Guild," deadpans Matthews. "This record is more Oompa Loompa." Thought that was interesting. Exactly! Every time somebody sees my CD-collection, they pity me for my "materialism". Sure there is some satisfaction in buying new stuff, BUT mainly for the joy of hearing/feeling new music! I consider my CDs the soundtrack of my life, and so my collection is something like a photo-album to me, full of memories and feelings. Me? Expert? Thanks. Anyway, I would recommend any of the following, and I will give my reasons as well. Firstly, for More. I think I would have to give Take the Time or Metropolis some nods, and let's not forget Wait for Sleep. In fact, I would do Wait for Sleep first. You may also consider UAGM or LTL. That is under a glass moon and learning to live if you didn't know. From wdadu, definitely Ytsejam, and Only a Matter of time. Oh, light fuse and get away may work as well. From Awake, Space Dye Vest, 6:00 or Scarred. Now, onto the Derek years. you could try ACOS, but I think Lines in the Sand, Just let me breathe or Burning my Soul may work. Trial of Tears could be cool as well. New Millennium could work as well, but not as well for Derek. No real solos there. Anna Lee may not be a good idea, since n that song, Derek sounds too much like a regular pop pianist. Not that I am disrespecting that, because every pianist needs to be able to do that. But, that is my definitive word on this subject. -- Damon Fibraio, email email_address_removed Keyboardist, vocalist, and looking for work "I can see much clearer, now I'm blind."--Dream Theater, Take The Time, Images and Words ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jun 1998 10:58:21 -0700 From: Carol Dellinger To: email_address_removed Subject: Re: Blindness and being more politically correct.
