With all this talk about pot and DT, I am surprised no one has noticed or
mentioned Mike's screen name "portnoy420".  420 is known as the Official time
to smoke pot.  That is why if you ever go into a head shop or "drug
parifinalia" store, you can find tons of stickers and such with 420 written
all over them.  Well guys, if this is your secret to making amazing music, I
might have to move to Amsterdam.  Of course, why isn't there a bunch of
amazing bands coming out of Amsterdam?

Besides, I think someone already mentioned the 420 had nothing to do with

about the topic, i just happened to send in for the Savatage "The Age of 
Discovery" set that Volodya advertised the other day on here from Open 
All Night Records a couple of weeks ago, and that happened to be copy 
#01 (out of only 75, so order NOW!), and it happened to arrive on 
Wednesday, and I've been listening to it whenever i've been home 
(between periods of the WIngs/stars and the caps/sabres games, of 
course).....

(and no, i ain't affiliated with these guys in any way, I'm just in a 
gushing mood)

first thing, the liner notes: a cool painting of some semi-prehistoric 
types out on a lake exploring something, apparently (i don't have it 
with me, forgot the exact detail)......the disc itself has pictures of 
the band, as does the back cover, and inside front cover, nice glossy 
stuff......
about the show: as volodya's ad said, the show was recorded last 
november in paris, so it's a twom tour show, and the setlist reads 
somewhat like what Matt Teiper described earlier today, with certain 
changes (no sirens, couple of other differences).....

highlights in the boot abound, from very sweetly clear vocals 
(especially when Zach Stevens sings, Oliva's vocals are rough, but 
that's a symptom of his vocals rather than the recording)......to a 
mostly great recording mix, to the bonus track from a late 96 DWD tour 
show which include starlight, one child, mozart and madness and DOESN'T 
MATTER ANYWAY (which happens to be my favorite savatage song)

as for the vocals.....chance, the hourglass and the wake of magellan are 
all included on the setlist, and the counterpoint stuff is beatifully 
represented on chance and twom.....for some reason, i can't quite recall 
that part of the hourglass, but i'm sure it's there.....

this has been one rough and tumble review, but take with you this bottom 
line....basically, "The Age of Discovery" is a damn fine $29 spent, I 
tell you whut.....

I would also rave about OAN Records intro disc "Into the great unknown", 
which feature a coupla track from DT, 'deth, 'tage, hammerfall, gamma 
ray, vanden plas, and some more, but that's not being offered anymore, 
so I won't rub it in......let's just say that i'm gonna grab me some 
vanden plas sometime really soon......if anyone would care to suggest a 
particular disc for me (private mail, please, i'm sure it's been done 
before), I would be mighty thankful....

oh, and one more thing about OAN.....after I'd received the boot, but 
before I'd had the chance to inform them that it had arrived, the guy 
wrote and 1)inquired about it's arrival, and 2) informed me that their 
was a printing error on the liner notes, and a replacement was in the 
mail already.....speaks for itself, I'd think.......

Yeah, these Cosmic Credit, RAM , etc. programs are quite a good deal...
you don't need to have anything for it, not even a web page (they
will give you a URL and you can just type it in/bookmark it)...btw
other non-music stores also do this type of thing (e.g. amazon.com).

On synth modules:

The TR-Rack can play 32 samples simultaneously.  Each voice in a patch can
play up to 2 samples at once, so your minumum polyphony is 16.  You can
velocity switch another sample for each of the 2 in a voice, so you can
have up to 4 samples in a patch, but only 2 triggering at once.  It has 16
parts multitimbral, so it can chew up a whole MIDI port easily.  Drums can
be on any channel, and obviously can violate the only 4 samples per voice
restriction.  48Khz sampling rate, so it has some nice sparkly highs.

The Roland 1080 and 2080 have 64 voice polyphony (I think) and each patch
can have up to 4 samples triggered at once.  So your minimum polyphony is
again 16, but can sound richer cause of the more voices.   You can do
velocity switching within your 4 voices if you want, or use less than 4
voices per patch, but you get the idea.   Only 8 parts multitimbral, and
one part is dedicated to drums.  In fact, you can only have drums on that
one channel.  Each part can be set up to receive on any MIDI channel, tho,
so drums don't have to be on channel 10.

The Yamaha EX5R has 128 voice polyphony (so the brochure sez) and can have
up to 4 samples per patch, or some combiation of 3 samples and one of the
other waveforms (anamog model, physical model, DSP model) -- I don't know
if the other models chew up more voices than a sample does.  I haven't
played on this yet, so I don't know too much about it.

Just trying to point out that it's important to remember how many voices
the thing can play, how many voices make up a patch, and how much _real_
polyphony and multi-timbral capabilities you get before you buy.  They
throw lots of numbers around, and it can be confusing, so don't hesitate to
ask.  :)

Aye yai yai.  Adam agreed with me, why wont you? : )  I would love to see
those six sources that say Berlioz wrote parts of the piece under the
influence of opium.  As for me, here are my credible sources.

Edward Downes, program writer for the New York Philharmonic for fourteen
seasons and conductor emeritus of the BBC Philharmonic, wrote a book
entitled _Guide to Symphonic Music_.  It contains programs for all major
orchestral works, and is 1000+ pages long.  Here is what it says.

"Imagine, wrote Berlioz, that an artist gifted with vivid imagination first
glimpses a woman who embodies the ideal he has long carried in his
heart...[cut for brevity, no context is lost]...In a fit of despair the
artist poisons himself with opium.  But instead of killing him, the does
induces horrible nightmares.  He believes that he has killed his beloved
and has been condemned to death."

Note that from this quotation, Berlioz is writing about an _imagined_
artist.  So the imagined artist took the opium, not Berlioz.

Also...

"In our own time Berlioz's program has been widely attacked on the grounds
that it is inaccurate as autobiography.  It has been solemnly pointed out
that Berlioz never took Henriette [his love, and the basis for the idee
fixe] to a ball, that he did not poison himself with opium, and that by the
time the Symphony reached performance he was wooing another woman."

That is from Downe's _Guide to Symphonic Music_.  Pretty clear cut as to
whether Berlioz used opium or not.

Michael Steinberg, current program writer for the San Francisco Symphony
and New York Philharmonic (after Downes), and former program writer for the
Boston Symphony Orchestra.  In his book, _The Symphony: A Listener's Guide_
he writes:

"[Berlioz began work] on the symphony whose design he described in detail
to his friend the poet Humbert Ferrand. 

In brief, 'an artist, gifted with imagination [falls in love with] a woman
who embodies the ideal of beauty and fascination that he has long been
seeking.'"

So Steinberg makes it clear in the same fashion as Downes that Berlioz and
the fictional character depicted in the symphony are two different people.
Later, Steinberg quotes Berlioz's concert notes, which Berlioz intended to
be handed out at every performance.  These are the words of Berlioz.

"Having become certain that his love goes unrecognized, the artist poisons
himself with opium.  He dreams he has killed the woman he had loved, that
he is condemned, led to the scaffold, and that he is witnessing HIS OWN
EXECUTION."

Berlioz capitalized those last words, not me : )

]From reading these texts, it is clear to me that Berlioz himself did not
poison himself.  The artist of his symphony, Berlioz's imagined and
fictional character, did.  Some aspects of the symphony do reflect
Berlioz's life, but as for Berlioz being on drugs while composing the
piece, there is no evidence that Ive seen to support that, and quite a bit
of evidence to refute it.

If you really do have six sources that say Berlioz poisened himself, please
post them.  I would be eager to read them.

Hey Folks!

I was just watching MTV and Matt Pinfiled (one of the VJs) said to email
or called between 12:30-1:30 pm (or was it 1:30-2:30?) during the week to
get your videos on TV. 

I was thinking about it, and I'm not so sure that everyone emailing MTV
onb a specific day is such a great idea. They're not a bunch of idiots.
It's not hard to figure out that if you get 10,000 emails on friday and
they all say "play Dream Theater's 'lie'", they're probably gonna assume
that all the die-hard fans agreed on this particular day to write them.

I have no idea if this would work, but what if we agreed on a month where
maybe 50-100 people write them each day asking them to play a Dream
Theater video. Maybe even less than that. If we funnel the emails in
gradually, they might actually believe that it's not just the die-hards
writing them. 

Just an idea.

BMS is actually the song I was voting for until someone told me it 
wasn't a single (?).  (I have no clue because I don't buy singles)

As Im sure you guys are aware, Hyperion, Australias only "proper" metal
band split almost 2 years ago. The magic vocalist,"Jimmy Georgopoulos"
has joined another band here in Melbourne by the name of "Eye Fear".
They are very progressive and have released a cd called "Edge of
Existance".   This however, does not feature the new vocalist.  The new
album we'll be out in two months.  If you have the some previous
"Hyperion" albums I'm sure this new Eye Fear album will allow you to
remenise.  Eye Fear is nothing without "Jim Georgopoulos", and Hyperion
were only the greatest because of him.................................

Now, as many of you can tell from my sig, I'm a big QR fan, and let me
say this, that anyone who says that great music can't be created using
drugs(if anyone said that), is a total idiot.  DeGarmo has been on
drugs, as any QR fan knows, yet he's done some marvelous work.  I
personally love Promised Land probably more than any other QR album, and
I can say this about it(and I can't say this for most albums), there is
not a SINGLE song on it I don't like.  Now, you look at other musicians,
as I've read, it seems as though a few DT members smoke some, although
it's not proven and I don't want to say that they definitely do.  You
look back at the Beatles, Sgt. Pepper's and the White Album, two of the
greatest rock albums of all time, were written while they were drugged
up.  You look at the jazz world, same thing, Charlie Parker did some of
his most incredible solos while he was high on heroin.  Does this mean
that I'm advocating drug use? Not at all, though it may sound like it. 
Even Charlie Parker got SEVERLY pissed when he would see them follow
what he did, using drugs.  All I'm saying is don't put down someone for
using them when they are still writing and performing some great music.

and I read a review about an album by John Wesley, the review says it is
considered the male tori amos, and that he has opned for progressive bands,
