Towards the front of the mag. (page 15 or something, I think), there's a page on Progressive Rock. They have mini reviews of FII, Marillion "This Strange Engine" and a few others. It was a pretty favorable review, and concluded with something to the effect of "DT is at the head of the class of progressive rock" or something like that. Also in the progressive review, they mentioned some other prog. bands (Rush, etc.). They also mentioned Hawkwind (They're actually more spacerock than progressive, IMO). Have any jammers ever listened to them? I have one CD, "Chronicle of the Black Sword", which is OKAY (nothing spectacular). I actually picked it up because it's a concept album based on Michael Moorcock's Elric books (if anybody's into relatively deep fantasy/sci-fi.... check out Moorcock). On the classical note, I went out and bought Mahler's 5th today (by the New York philharmonic w/ Leonard Bernstein). I've listened to a little of it: So far, so good! The only weak thing is the vocals as usual, but the music is excellent. Roland and Korg. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that only Roland and Korg offer a "joystick" style pitch bend & mod, or it may be other facors, but that's why those two win my support. Other board I;ve noticed: A lot of folks seem to like Ensoniq. I'd never play one as a controller cause it has these big ungainly PB & Mod wheels instead of a stick, but both Fates shows had ensoniq boards (prolly Jim's that he makes the keyboardist use) and the guy from Enchant uses an Ensoniq. I'm a Roland and Korg guy, and here's my recommendations for boards: All in one workstation board: If you want just one keyboard to do it all, I'd say go for a Korg Trinity. I'm not familiar with the current crop of Roland's workstation boards, but the Trinity has great sounds, if you go for the 76 key version you get the Prophecy solo synth built-in, and you get a ribbon controller, which is a nice bonus. Master controller: If you don't need biult-in sounds, here I favor either the ROland A-70 (76 keys, non-weighted) or the A-90 (88 key, piano weighted, can add in a piano sound board to it) -- really nice master controllers with 4 (I think) MIDI outs, both a joystick _AND_ old-style wheels for PB & Mod, plus assignable sliders, and a good keyboard feel. SOund Modules: Here's really up in the air. Want Trinity sounds? TR-Rack. Want Roland sounds? JV-1080 or 2080. Want Alesis Sounds? Go with one of those. Basically find one with sounds you like and get it. Specialty keyboards: There's lots here, like the Korg Z-1, Prophecy (physical modelling keyboards) Roland JP-8000 (like an old analog keyboard with knobs & such for editing the sound as you play) Roland VK-7 (best darn Hammond organ emulation this side of a Hammond Organ -- just ask Keyboard Magazine) and various others. I think Yamaha has a new line of boards out. Seen em (blue!) but not played on one yet. Don't get these unless they have just happen to have that elusive sound you can find nowhere else. And, you'll most likely still needa another board as your main one. Samplers: Don't own one (yet) but I'd say go with E-Mu. They were one of the ones who started the whole sampling thing, and it's still their primary market. Amps: I recently got the Roland KB-500 150 watt amp. I chose it over other considerations (such as a similar Peavey) because it can mix up to 4 stereo channels (i.e. total 8 channels) -- most of the others are 3 or 4 mono channels. and has handy wheels on the bottom. :) Hope that's enough for prospective keyboard buyers. I don't have tons of specific boards or recommendations, but it really depends on your needs. Ask yourself: 1) Do I want an all-in one board or a controller plus sound modules. The latter is more versatile, but the former is cheaper in the short run. 2) How many keys? 61? 76? 88? Weighted or not? (actually, it's pretty much 88 =3D=3D weighted, less =3D=3D non-weighted) 3) Do I have any special needs? (really want analog style sounds, really want the best hammond organ sound, really want physical modeling) There ya go. I shut up now about this until the next time. :) ~Chris __../\..__ Chris Oates: email_address_removed __\/__\/__ +---- .\_||_/.. | "Still awake, I continue to move along, cultivating my | /__||__\. | own nonsense" -Dream Theater, "Trial of Tears"=A0=A0=A0=A0=A0= =A0=A0=A0 | //.\ |..\\ ----+ ...\|.... http://www2.ucsc.edu/people/aspect/=20 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Jun 1998 09:20:02 +0100 From: NGA To: "'email_address_removed'" Subject: Classic stuff Message-ID: Hi all I'm afraid I can't keep quiet on this one. Try almost anything by Wagner, especially the Ring cycle. This guy was writing metal 100 years ago. OK, the early stuff isn't too hot, but anything after Der Fliegende Hollaender is simply brilliant. The Ring cycle is also a must for all "long song' fetishists here - it's so long that it is usually split up over four evenings. Nicholas Gunn is a >flutist (very southwestern style), and David Arkenstone is sort of a >"fantasy" musician; two CDs are musical stories that he co-wrote with >fantasy author Mercedes Lackey. Good shit all around. I'll second that. David Arkenstone is the next step, or maybe even a step ahead of Yanni. His music seems to migrate from style to style as his albums progress. In the Wake of the Wind is a rather typical fantasical new age album, Quest of the Dream Warrior (my fave) has the same with a Middle Eastern blend. Return of the Guardians has a bit more of Tribal feel to it, but all three retain the same fantasy feel to them. Spirit Wind has more of an American Indian vibe that melds well with his style, and his latest, The Celtic Book of Days is rather self-explanatory. The Celtic stuff rokz nadz. As far as his earlier stuff, I haven't listened to much of except for a Best of album named Chronicles which I think is pretty damn good. He's got about 12 albums or so, so you have plenty of exploring by to do by wading through his material. He has a newer compilation album out calles Celestial something or other that might be a good starter into his music. I love it. OK, the Yanni MP3's are done. I made two. The first is the song, "Tribute", after all of the compositional/classical discussion, seemed to most closely fit into that area. It's not really showy but is a great orchestral demonstration. The second is Keys to Imagination from Live at the Acropolis. It's a long standing Yanni favorite and basically shows off Yanni's most contemporary songwriting skills. I'd even go as far to say this could appease alot of you "prog or die" guys. On his solotour for Sunsets on Empire last year, he jumped out in the crowd during Internal Exile and danced some Scottish (I think) dance with members of the audience. Fish also took pictures on stage with a fan's camera and gave it back, he had "real" discussions with the crowd between songs, and all that.
