I don't think targeting the setlist will work, but I'm willing to bet that if they just play a set that represents the band's work as a whole, they'll impress *everyone* at the show. ----- Another thing I think all the setlist suggesters should consider: Don't forget what the #1 complaint of no-DT fans is about the band - that they "overplay" (you know, the old "it sounds like a bunch of guys showing off how good they are"). If you are going to target the setlist (and I'm not suggesting here that they *should*), as much as it may offend *our* sensibilities, you'd have to tone down the musical histrionics. The danger there is that if you do that, you are no longer presenting DT to the crowd, you are presenting some watered-down version of DT, and I don't think anyone really wants that. That's why I believe they should just do what they do best. If they impress the crowd, fine. If not, it's the crowd's loss. _____Pat Sullivan_____________________________________________ E-mail: (psull)-(at)-(ici)-(dot)-(net) IRC: DDictator WWW: http://www.just-like.nu/ ______________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 May 1998 09:29:34 -0500 From: Dave Ware To: "'email_address_removed'" Subject: London Gig. Get the train, that's what we did in December, the Tube Station is real close, so there's no problem. If you have to drive, get to a quiet Tube on the outskirts of London somewhere then get the Underground. That gig's gonna rock you in a big way, it's a pretty small venue so it feels nice and personal. Cheers, Dave (a UK Jammer now in Alabama). PS. If James ever left DT (hope not), I think the best replacement would be this incredible vocalist by the name of Charlie Dominici. I'm not sure if he's ever been in any band, but take my word for it, he's good. Although it would definitely be a change for DT, since his vocals are more in the death-metal cookie-monster direction. But, he couples that raw and unbridled growling with the mindblowing power of Russel Allen and Geoff Tate among others. Plus there would be an age difference between him and DT, since he is 73 or 74, I think. :) Matt Smith the next Vanilla Ice ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Album Currently Playing: Symphony X--The Damnation Game ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matt Smith "We say revolution... email_address_removed With a cast-iron fist" -Mustaine ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 28 May 1998 14:13:25 -0400 (EDT) From: Damon Fibraio To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: Re: Subdivisions Question Message-ID: That small keyboard geddy had on the test for echo tour could be a nord lead or a roland jp8000. As for the show of hands version of subdivisions, I think it is weak precisely for the digital keyboards sounds. And the solo? Geddy, what were you thinking? muddy, string sounding crap. I like the minimoog solo and I think the song was built around that sound. And I still think Geddy should've kept the oberheim and taurus pedals and minimoog. I just point out that elp fans will love the overplaying, if you want to call it that. Look at Keith Emerson. You tell me he doesn't have a flair for the dramatic? And Deep Purple was for its time, a real hardass band. So, the fans of DP may enjoy the heavy side of DT. This may work out great. And they are from different countries. Doesn't that Fripp own 5 mellotrons?
