Well, I'm exhausted, a little bruised, and very dehydrated and hungry, but it was so fucking worth it! I don't think life can get any better. :) The Ft. Worth show was something out of this world! I just got home from the show, and here are my initial thoughts. Ytsejammers: You guys were great! We all met up around 4 p.m. outside the club and had a seat to figure out what we were going to do next. Well, the next thing we knew, someone else walked up with tickets in hand and sat down next to us. Within 15 minutes, a healthy line had formed behind us, so we were stuck. No Billy Miner's... after all that planning. Anyway, all of you guys were great to talk with. Special shots out to Ryan Webb (our "weasel"), Chad Allen Klunck, Anna, Cory and the other guy whose name I forgot... (Was it Wade? I told you I don't remember names well), Mauricio, Alan, and that other girl (sorry if I crushed you during the show), and ScottH and his brother. You guys learned how to speak slowly really well! ;-) Sorry if I've missed anyone, but I'm really tired, and my head hurts a little. We also got to see Derek come out and buy a coffee from a stand outside the club, and he and John P. walked around Ft. Worth for a while. (shopping?) Venue: Decent-sized. We wound up on the front row (Ken actually was right behind me protecting me from the surging crowd) and slightly right of center. We were right in front of James and JP for most of the show and RIGHT in front of Mike's small kit. More on that later. :) FotM: They were OK. I was a little afraid the singer would jump on me or hit me with the microphone stand during the show. :P But the weird thing about him is that he kept rolling his eyes back in his head while he sang. The music was decent, and the crowd was rather responsive, but at the end of their set, the drummer decided to -- get this! -- surf the crowd. And he landed right on top of me, kicking me in the head. Well the crowd nearly dropped him (haha!) and he kicked me again on his way back to the stage. fucker. :P DT: Kicked ass! Flawless! Awesome! Some of the highlights were when James grabbed my banner (that said Texans Love Dream Theater and had lots of signatures by then) and held it up in front of the crowd. I got some nice applause for that. :) Then, when Mike sat down at his smaller kit for Anna Lee, etc., I showed him my fingernails. Yes, I had the letters Ytsejam and several Majesty logos on my fingers. He looked and looked, and finally said, what is that? I yelled "Ytsejam!" and he got it! :) Anyway, after he was done there, he HANDED me a drumstick. I mean, he looked at me and put it in my hands. :) Some of the downers included nearly breaking a rib as the crowd pushed forward to reach James' hand, having an asthma attack right there in the middle of their set, and getting kicked in the head once more by a FUCKING IDIOT who started crowd surfing. Security literally pushed him back into the crowd. You just don't do that, guys! After the show: Ken met up with some of his old friends... Brian Cox who he used to room with in college, and also a friend of his from elementary thru high school, Derek (who plays with Haje's Kitchen). Anyway, Derek got us into the aftershow, which included signatures and pictures with DS, JP, and MP. Meeting Mike again was the coolest because he recognized me as the DT in Texas person. (He said to me, "I got your e-mail," and I about died!) Anyway, he signed my drumstick and tourbook and posed for a picture. All of them are really a class act! Well, I think I've gone on long enough this evening. Thanks, DT for a wonderful night! (minus the bruises ;-) More on the SA show tomorrow night! -Nicole/Kirby -- Nicole Stachowicz McWatters : Assistant Editor of Dateline Kirby on irc.dreamt.org : a student publication of the Undergrad Professional Writing Major : University of Houston-Downtown email_address_removed -or- email_address_removed http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/5039 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 May 1998 03:41:16 -0700 From: Michael Bahr To: email_address_removed Subject: I'd like them to keep James for the foreseeable future. Message-ID: This is just my opinion of course, but I really, REALLY would not like to see DT replace James at this point. You know, early on we all had our gripes about the guy. But let's look at how he's come along lately... 1. James doesn't just blow his voice out during Metropolis and Glass Moon right as the concert's starting anymore. He actually saves some for the end! And better yet, he's getting more power into those lungs and throat consistently just from experience and practice, it appears. James is 1000% better right now on this tour than he has been at any time in the past... and I have the tapes to prove it! (Well, the past part.) Instead of two songs of fireballing vocals followed by fifteen songs of growling, coughing, and letting the crowd sing the chorus, we now get a good solid couple dozen songs of James at 100%. Much, much better. 2. James was, along with John Petrucci, one of those in the band who was originally very upset and offended by bootlegs. As he started to perceive the hardcore-ness of the fans and how much they cherish each boot, and the absolute devotion both to DT and to his own craft that represented, his opinion relented and while he ain't a Portnoy, he isn't Mr. Stiff anymore either. 3. James was the band member who had the hardest time dealing with the zealot fans throughout the world, initially. Stories abounded about how he was rude, curt, short, confused, or just plain upset when dealing with fans during the Images tour and early in the Awake. Boy, has this guy made 100% turnaround from this!! Somewhere, somehow, he turned a situation that frustrated him into a situation that he could shine in. I see this guy deal with some of the most slack-jawed moronic fans, and also some of the most persistent watching-him-while-he-defecates hardcore no-lifer fans, and he gets along with them like they were old buddies or something. I'd say he borrowed a page from the Holy Book Of Portnoy, but he didn't; his attitude and method of mingling with the fans is a type entirely his own and not at all reminiscent of Mike's. I'm still trying to figure out how he changed from being deer-eyed at DT's cult status to reveling in it. 4. Finally, after the equivalent of five studio albums, the latter four of which featured him at the helm, his voice has become a better and better complement to the songs themselves. I could imagine Charlie singing Metropolis... partly because he has! But the TAMP Demo, Peruvian Skies, New Millennium... would NOT be right without K.J. LaBrie shoutin' into th' Shure. So take that opinion for what you will. Me, I vote we keep the guy. Besides, it's getting to be a pain to get these guys trained and then watch them disappear. Message-ID: If DT had to get a new singer, my vote is for Tom Araya. That guy can sing. He has a range like no other. DT would have to play all the songs in Eb though. But if they ever cover In a Gadda Da Vidda - WOW. What a sight. But since Tom Araya is too good for DT, we have to get serious. I would love to see DT do a rotating door thing on just one album. I think James has a hard job being a ballad dude, a metal dude, etc, etc. Everyone I think of doesn't quite fill every niche. I think it would be cool to have Ray Alder sing on a moody prog songs. Phil Anselmo (Cowboys from Hell days, not now) sing on a song that allows him to sing and shout. Devin Townsend would be amazing on just about anything. Geoff Tate of course. But it would be cool have Tori Amos sing on a song. Tori on a song like Space Dye Vest. Yup I'd pay to hear that. And why didn't anyone say Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell. And lets see - Doug Pinnick and Ty Tabor (Ty cuz the Beatles don't really exist anymore). But let's get real - Mike Portnoy is already training to take over. Bye James. Just don't let John P. take over. Unless John Myung is holding back and can sing but just too damn shy to show off. But I can't name one singer to replace James. I do however think having a different singer for every song as an experiment would be really cool. Or even mix it up - Ty on Verse - Doug on Chorus. I've got the DTIFC photo signed by everyone but Myung, (signed with a Sharpie marker). I just got to thinking about this because I'm looking at some old signed stuff I have where the signatures faded away (for example a pic of me and Bo Schembechler - former Michigan football coach). And all the stuff that's faded HAS been in a frame the whole time...... Also, a question about the Detroit show that was on the 12th. *************************************************************************************************************** *************** A brief mention of a few things from the setlist ******************************************** **************** READ WITH CAUTION (no big SPOILERS or anything..... but just in case....) ****************** ************************************************************************************************************** What was that thing that JP briefly played called that sounded like a Russian song (kinda sounded like the Tetris theme or something)? Christian mentioned that he thinks they played a part of "Cupid's Dead"? One, did they? And two, is this an Extreme song? Thirdly, I keep hearing about JP playing part of "Flight of the Bumblebee" at alot of the shows. Did he play it at the Detroit show? (I didn't catch it). Lastly, the Nicky Lemons song "I Don't Like You", is this a cover of an old punk tune, or did DT throw it together? Ummmm I think the whole point of DT is having musicians that excel in their respective instruments... if yer gonna go "commercial" you might as well replace Petrucci by one of the guys from Matchbox 20, John Myung by Michael Inez, Mike Portnoy by a drum machine and fire Derek..... And I'm NOT saying it's not possible to make great music with such a team, I'm just saying it is kinda going against what I think DT is about, which is creating great songs with great musicianship... With all the Steve Vai talk on the 'jam lately, it's about time I pick up something by him. What's a good CD to start off with? note-- I did see Vai live in '96 with the G3 tour..... he was good, but I wasn't familiar at all with his music. 2. I have Queensryche's "Empire". While I think it's a good CD (I mainly bought it for the commercially successful tunes I was familiar with..... like Empire and Jet City Woman), it doesn't strike me as VERY progressive (although admittedly it's been quite awhile since I've listened to it). What should be my next Queensryche purchase (which is the most prog-ish?)? I hear alot about O:M. 3. I've been inspired :-) by LaBrie's Vanden Plas shirt (he's wearing it in the Motown show pics I had developed today) to check them out. Could someone tell me what they're like, and which CD to start with? Thanks is advance, - Joe D. GO WINGS ****************************************************************************** BEEP! BEEP! That's very true. People do judge that type of band by their fans. Tho' 99% of them are just there to dance and have a good time, the bands have very good musicians. I don't like Phish myself, but Widespread and Galactic (I've seen WSP 12 times this year) are quite capable with their instruments. They aren't particularly original (about 1/3 of WSP songs are covers and the solo/jams tend to get monotonous), but they put on a good show. The best, and most original, band of that nature is the Grateful Dead. Most people won't give the Dead a chance, and I was one of them until I started hanging out with people who listened to it 24/7. Prog fans should try songs like Terrapin Station (14-25 minutes depending on the jam and very complex musically) and maybe Dark Star. After I gave them a chance I realized that they're really worthy of a listen, even tho' alot of their fans don't know squat about music (and tend to smell). :) __________________________________________________ Adam Pye (Alpine/Alpineone/Alpione) alpineone(-at-)mindspring.com ICQ: 9382967 http://www.mindspring.com/~alpineone/tapelist.html ^ Above URL for bootlist w/ setlists __________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 May 1998 19:27:09 -0400 From: "earthblind, starbound" To: email_address_removed Subject: Music that Kicks Ass - Vernon Reid Message-ID: "You Say He's Just a Psychic Friend" - by Vernon Reid http://www.afn.org/~afn39111/psychic.zip "What's My Name" - by Vernon Reid http://www.afn.org/~afn39111/name.zip from MISTAKEN IDENTITY Everyone here knows who Vernon Reid is. He was the guitarist for Living Colour. With Living Colour I found him messy and random, but now he's much more controlled. With this album we have Vernon and Masque, his band, which brings some wicked clarninet blowing. "Psychic Friend" is a very minor sort of song here, is it jazz or hard rock or hip hop? Can't tell. Guess it's 'prog.' Anyway, Chubb Rock guests to rap a verse at the end, so I guess it's rap music. "What's My Name" is a completely insane high speed heavy sort of jam. Great clarinet and some of vernon's old shredding so fast it should be against the law. These are mp3s, which means you need the right player. They're zipped to stop stupid browsers from cooking it. Psychic is 2 megs, 5 minutes. Name is 1.7 megs, 4 minutes. There are 587 days remaining. These files will exist for 7.
