Looks like I just made the executive decision to not go to just the San Antonio and Ft. Worth shows, but also the Lubbock! I did a little 'driving directions' query on the Yahoo map service, and it turns out the Lubbock show is only 345 miles away from me (Dallas). Averaging 70 mph, it should take me a little less than 5 hours to make it. Time to start making minidiscs for the drive. =) I called Ralph's Records in Lubbock, and the guy told me to not worry about reserving a ticket because there was a ton left. Doh! Anyway, my question for the Lubbock show is this: I'm coming in on I-20 from Dallas. Somebody please e-mail me the exact directions to the club from I-20. This would make life a lot easier. Special thanks go to Nicole Stachowicz McWatters and her informative site about the three Texas shows. Her URL is: http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/5039/dt.html I'm bringing my DAT machine to all three shows. So if you talk to me during one of them, I'm going to take you to the ground. =) Mike Portnoy promised me soundboard feeds for all three shows, but I declined, as I prefer the ambient feel of an audience recording. pshaw.. I'm outta here for now. See you all at the shows! (L.A. + Tour Books for sale) Message-ID: Well, just got back from my Great L.A. adventure about two hours ago (and spent the last hour reading my waiting email) I won't post about how absolutely kickass the Monday HoB show was -- Mike P, If you are reading this: Thanks so much for the alternate setlist! I'm the guy who talked to you about in in San Fran when you mentioned you would do it Monday night. What a blast. Sorry I didn't get to meet all of the L.A. area Jammers. My friend Ruth and I ended up parking in a garage that closed hald an hour after the show ended, and I didn't want to end up with my car in prison :) so we had to leave right away. Still, it was good seeing Dino (Mosh) and Rick again, and meeting John K. Perhaps next time ... ? And, in general, the House of Blues is an amazing place to see a show. We need one of those up here in the Bay Area. As I mentoined before, I picked up two extra Tour books at the San Francisco show. I got a possible buyer for one, but have one more open. It'll be $12 + shipping (my cost) -- lemme know if interested. I'm still trying to figure out why my sig gets munged in the jam, so I'm leaving it out of this post for your viewing pleasure. :) ~Chris ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 May 1998 02:34:35 -0700 From: Michael Bahr Subject: Review: Arizona show 5/20 [NO SPOILERS] Message-ID: That's right, no spoilers so don't worry, you don't have to skip this if you're still waiting to see Dream Theater. The nutshell review for those in a hurry: it was real good. The long review: Why is it that "event staff" people all over the world have to be obnoxious glandular freaks? Allow me to add detail to this vague hypothesis. I show up at Club Rio at around 4pm, since I know the band will be way too busy later on, and I basically just walk right into the venue with a pile of CDRs for Mike Portnoy under my arm, and the band crew asks who the hell I am and that I'm not allowed there, but I showed them that I had some stuff to drop off for Mike, and they were cool with it. DT's crew is definitely a lot friendlier now than in the Jim Pitulski/Todd Confessore days. Their tech/effects guy (the guy by the side of the stage with the laptop) is one cool fellow, and we shoot the shit for a while as I wait for Mike to get done with a photo shoot for a distinguished lady of the local press. FXguy gets a little testy when it looks like I'm sneaking a peek at the setlist, but I assure him that I have no desire to spoil the surprise, and that he has nothing to worry about. Then, over walks the Portmeister. If I don't mention it later, before I forget, I gotta say this guy is the ultimate fan's musician. He himself is DT's biggest fan, and I've never met a person with as good an attitude as his that has to meet and greet as many strangers as he does every day. Mike was holding a little bundle of joy named Melody Portnoy, and I can't remember seeing a cuter baby in the recent past. Marlene Portnoy was there looking blonder than I remembered her from back in New York in '95, so either she dyed it blonde or she's an actual blonde who had it dyed dark the last time I saw her. Mike himself had "frosted"/highlighted hair... overall brown and almost blond in spots, over the base black. James, as many of you know, now sports short hair with Black Black Black Black Numbah One!!! coloring in it. I don't know why I remember this stuff, but I do. Anyway Mike and Marlene are both downright jovial, they're so friendly, and Mike and I chat about a few things in the few minutes he has before he has to get back to work. I manage to somehow mooch aftershow passes from him. I don't think I'll ask for them next time... I think Mike has done more than enough for me already, and I'll be content to enjoy the show from here on out, I think. This doesn't mean I'll refuse the passes if offered, of course. I ain't stupid. :) So it's time to get into line. My wife Melissa and my brother in law Joe are at the front of the line, where they had been waiting since the moment we got to the venue (way ahead of pretty much everyone) but the lady working event staff tells me that if I'm on the guestlist, I'll need to wait at the side door. No problem, says I. So I wait there. As the hours go on, the line grows LONG, and then they start letting people in, and I find out from the nice lady at the side door that I was supposed to wait in the normal line all along! Argh! She tells me to just go up to the front and explain the situation, and that they'd let me go right on in. So I get there, and this gigantic staff asshole decides he's gonna get right in my FACE and tell me to go to the END of the line (behind the 700 people who got there ten minutes ago) or I can just go right on home. Any attempt by me to feebly explain what happened is met with a thunderous, "No, you're going to GO to the back of the line, or I'll have you dragged right out of here!" My sole comfort came from the fact that I saw the guy get reprimanded for it when the nice little lady asks him "if you let in that nice guy who was on the guest list that I sent over to this line." Apparently SHE was the boss. Good for her. I know most of you don't care about this sort of thing, but you might as well have a laugh at my expense, since it's already over with. :) So in I go, my folks have already staked out a nice plot over by the right-side column (those of you at Rio know what I mean) with a nice direct view of the stage. Little did I know HAIR-MAN would stand in front of me, obscuring my view throughout most of the show, starting later when DT's set began. Full on the Mouth... ain't too bad really. They depend too much on prerecorded samples and such, and their more straightforward style of play is a mismatch for DT. They should have been opening for Megadeth or Slayer or something. I don't have any real complaints about them other than those. They played tight and got on well with the crowd. The songs were decent, and congrats to them for their videogame soundtrack contract... it'd be cool if the guys in DT could get that. (wink) DT's set took place next. I won't spoil anything, suffice it to say that they were hamming it up all over the place, they added a few choice songs to the set and did the usual "cover tidbits" within some of the more common songs. Petrucci was in high form and seemed determined to be heard no matter what the current material was. Talk about all over the place!! Portnoy, for whom overplaying is an art the way touchdown celebration dances are for Neon Deion, did not disappoint. Joe (my bro-i-law) was in absolute disbelief after watching most of Mike's better drum rolls, fills, accents, and such. The audience-participation stuff went over just great. James and Mike both apologized to the crowd for it being nearly four years since they had played Arizona, and promised it wouldn't be nearly as long the next time, hinting at a tour with Deep Purple this fall and a new album early next year. I can definitely appreciate that!! DT's set was over two and a half hours. I get the general idea they went too long, because apparently they had a problem with a curfew locally and had to not do an aftershow meet & greet!!! So I guess the passes were just keepsakes... cool ones, though. The band DID oblige the mob outside by hanging out by the bus to sign guitars, tourbooks, tickets, CD liners, and such. A real great bunch of guys, them. We don't get given the bad news gently... another huge ruffian decides to kick us all out of the venue at a very high volume, despite our, "But look! We've got passes!" pleas. "Ain't no after-show, the club's closing RIGHT NOW!!!" was the enraged reply. You know, what strikes me most odd about this and the other guy's behaviour towards me and mine that night was not what they said, but how they said it. They could have told us that stuff in a totally neutral/offhand/straightforward tone and we'd have just accepted it at face value. But no, they had to shove it up our ass and twist. I guess there's just no dealing with some people. Problems: the sound. Way too loud. Rio has shitty acoustics, so I don't know how much of this was/is DT's fault. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. Other problems: Rio's staff was clearly cooperating with DT's staff in name only. I saw nothing but professionalism from DT's people, and nothing but horseshit from the locals, and that's without even considering the two run-ins I had with them personally. I'm glad DT was able to play Arizona AT ALL (last year the club they were going to play [Electric Ballsack] lost its liquor license and they had to cancel at the last moment!!) but here's hoping they can arrange for a better venue next time. My recommendations: Mesa Ampitheatre, Cajun House in Scottsdale, and/or Gibson's in Tempe (two miles from Club Rio!!). Positives: Damn near everything else. My companions all agreed it was the best concert they had ever been to, and I'm gonna have to concur with them. (And I've seen hundreds of shows!) I never heard James' voice crack... not ONCE. I never heard Mike miss a beat. Even Derek's fumblefingers were on their best behaviour... usually he can't go through a show without at least one or two biffs, but none were audible from where I stood. John Myung had some sort of string problem late in the show but was fantastic as far as performance goes. And John Petrucci... man, whatever he was on, gimme some of that. The man was all over the place. Most excellent. And turnout was quite high, especially for a band that hadn't been there since 12/5/1994. No, I didn't run DAT this time. I had, until today, been to seven DT shows, and only once did I relax and just enjoy the show without recording it (12/29/95, since others were already taping it). I decided that this was going to be another of those nights. I was in a mood to just stand back and let DT work their magic on my mind. Um, besides, my mics are broken. :) I wouldn't have taped it anyway, though, because Stream of Consciousness sounds better than any audience tape. And because, hang it all, I've probably done more than enough DT boots for a while. Overall... if you missed it... you'd better have been injured or dying or something, because this show was better than sex. :) Come back any time DT, you're most welcome here in the land of the infernal heat. I hope this posts to the 'Jam, because I know it's long. -- - Mike Bahr - Prism Records - Duelists' Convocation Level 2 Certified Judge - d u r n i k @ g o o d n e t . c o m - http://www.goodnet.com/~durnik/ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 May 1998 02:52:03 -0700 (PDT) From: Mats "Rydstr?m" To: email_address_removed Subject: PROG-O-RAMA #2 this Saturday!
