Message-ID: Hi Gang - Well, either you're all making boot copies and holding out on the rest of us (if so... BASTARDS! ;-) ), or people just aren't doing it, maybe assuming that others will do it, but either way, I am very surprised at the lack of mention of boot recordings from this leg of the DT tour. I think it's almost over too (I haven't checked the tour calendar in a while, so I'm guessing). Anyway, somebody PLEASE get some boots from the rest of the shows. From what I've seen, John DiBella has the only one from Irving Plaza, but he says it's not a perfect recording. I noticed a post about a web broadcast from the HoB coming up. Here's kinda what I had in mind; I get as many pictures from concerts as I can, I scan them in. Then I make a static website on the CD that has the pictures broke up by city and each page has a picture, who donated it, and a little description. This will also give everyone a chance to see what some of the other Jammers are like. Since 650 Meg of JPGs and HTML is a whole bunch I had also thought about throwing on some MP3s from the concert if anybody had any. I'd really love to do this but I'm gonna have to rely heavily on other folks for the content. Is anybody willing to help? There is still one point I haven't gotten: What kind of music it is? Is it, as the name suggests, experimental music (in some way)? Besides that, is there a sound clip of the album somewhere? LuPone" To: email_address_removed Subject: Petrucci's rhythm guitar playing. Message-ID: Hey, I had an argument/discussion with someone on the IRC the other night about Petrucci's rhythm guitar playing. I said that I heard a lot of James Hetfield influence in Petrucci's rhythm playing, and someone disputed me and we had a good discussion. Anyway, to back up my point, here's what John Petrucci said himself in the February 1998 issue of Guitar For the Practicing Musician: MASTER OF PUPPETS -- Metallica "I had heard other Metallica records, but this was the album that really made an impression on me. I loved the heaviness of their sound and their tight riffs. This was a record that influenced my rhythm playing more than my soloing. ALL THOSE CHUNKY RIFFS THAT I PLAY WERE INSPIRED BY METALLICA." You heard it from the horse's mouth :) I really hear a lot of Metallica in Petrucci's playing. The most obvious example to me is the riff right when the heavy guitar comes in in Pull Me Under. That's in the old-school, downpicked thrash style...even though it's not really 'thrash' per se. Just the style. It's riffs like that that originally turned me onto DT's music in the first place. Other blatant examples could be parts of UAGM, Metropolis, almost every song on Awake, A Fortune in Lies, BMS, Peruvian Skies, and especially on the DT cover of Damage Inc. :) Mind you, I said "parts" of those songs. Petrucci just seems like a melting pot of musical and guitar knowledge, and he really shows off a lot of facets of his abilities everywhere...but it's his rhythm playing that most impresses me. Well, that and that fucking awesome sweep-picked arpeggio in his instructional video....you know, the one he spends 5 minutes diagraming and describing, just to rip through it in 3 seconds. :) John's a badass, and I'm REALLLY looking forward to seeing this monster live on Wednesday.
