Last fall me and my friend Josh saw DT at the HOB Chicago. Needless to say it was a great show and we had a blast. AT this time I had only been a DT fan for about 5 mo. and on the jam for 1 mo. After this concert we decieded that at our next DT concert we would get front row (we had 5'th at HOB). FF to when Mike announces tour dates for the spring. Me and Josh checked our calanders and decieded we could make it to the Detroit and Chicago shows even thought it ment taking two days off school the week before finals and driving over 1300 miles. We ordered our tix as soon as they were on sale, and planned to sleep in the car and buy food from the supermarket for the whol trip in order to save $$. We figured about 100$ for tix, gas, and food. Not bad for two DT shows. It's now a week before we are scheduled to leave, adn I find out that a Physics test that I planned on taking that week, go bumped back because the teacher had not covered enough info. At any rate the test got moved to Tues. the same night aas the Detroit show. I asked the teacher if i could take it early and he said it would not be a problem. I ask him on Mon. when if he is ready to give me the test that day, but he had not even written it yet. He said I could either take it inhte afternoon on Tues or on Wed. Well seeing that the shows are on these dates I tell him they are not good for me. He then starts to question me as to what reason I have for not being at the test, and when he finds that I dont have a reasonable one (death etc..) he says tough luck. SO i elect to take the exam on Tues at 2:00, the earliest he would allow. This was not good because it's takes at least 8 hrs of going 10-20 over to reach Detroit from Houghton, damn UP's one big speed trap of a two lane highway with a 55 speed limit:( Having packed the car the night before and making the tour tape* I take the test(no time limit) and leave at about 3:30. I hope to get there for at least the end of the show. *Tour Tape - A cassette tape made to the exact setlist of the current tour. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 01:49:07 -0400 From: Matt Stanich To: tvos@netcore.ca, email_address_removed Subject: Part 2 - Detroit // possible spoiler Message-ID: WARNING - POSSIBLE SPOILER Well the trip down was uneventful, and we made it to the show at about 12:00. I had hoped to be there at 11, but oh well. I had also hoped they started late for some reason so I could still see some of the show and not let my ticket go to waste. Well we park directly accross from the venue and see that the has been over for some time. They were loading the truck and about 20 or so people were waiting outside. Josh and I go get our stuff we want signed. I et my DTIFC picture (did not come signed) and proceed to wait. During this time we met a very cool jammer, Jeff E, who actually remebered my name from the jam which is suprising cuz I don't post all that much. Derek and JM came out first. They both bee-lined for the bus, but Derek yelled that he would be out later. Next out was JP. Very cool and not nearly at tall as I suspected. He also had his hair tied back and no facial hair. If not for the crowd of people around him I would have just thought it was another fan. I waited and got him to sign the picture, he was very cool to all the fans, even the 'psycho' fans. You know the ones, they tell the band how much they love them and ho much such and such song has changed their lives for ever, ask why they dumped Kev., then they want to take a zillion photos with them and give them a big hug and plant them a big fat kiss (well maybe not but you get the point). It's fine to feel this way, most of us do, but it's disrespectful of the band to treat them like this. These are the people that drive bands away from coming out after the shows. James came out next, he was more friendly than JP. He joked with all the fans and when two girls wanted a photo and crammed on his left side he said 'hey, James has two sides, lot of room for everyone'. I laughed and got him to also sign my photo. Then Derek came out of the bus for a very short break, signed a few thing and then ran to the other bus when fans started harassing him to much. Damn he's got a messy sig, yikes. After a bit JP came out again followed by Mike. I was the last one to talk to Mike and got to spend a bit more time with him than the others. He signed my photo and my LTE. Josh was having the band sign his ACOS and his un-used ticket. All of the band seemed to agree that it sucked that we missed the show, but as JP said - "Don't worry it sucked anyway." They all assured us Chicago would be much better. I also heard Mike talking about a new live video. The only thing I had forgotten was to ask JP if he would consider sticking the circus theme from univ. Mind in his solo, so I asked Mike insted and he said he would mention it to JP. Now back to the rabid fans I mentioned above. It quickly became apparent that there were two fans there more rabidly psycho then all other put together. One was big, one was small. One had long hair, one semi-short, both were greasy bums who planned on playing santa clause to the band with sackfulls of gifts for each member. They would attack each member seperately. First they would get stuff signed (photocopied pics of all things), then they would each take multiple pics. Next they would tell the band how much teey loved them and how they were the biggest fans in the world. They would then proceed to give gifts to the band. Each member got a hugh stack of british rock mags, along with a few hardcover books about 2-3 inches thick. These guys were obviously big pests and the band was dropping every hint in the book that they did not care, and they wanted them to leave. Derek physically ran away from them and poped onto the other bus. This group was later toted as the bible toting psychos because they books they carried look like the bible. I later found out from Mike that the big guy thought he was Dereks best bud because his mom and Derek's mom were friend. Man, I feel sorry for Derek having to put up with this sort of thing. Overall the night was very good, and it was worth meeting the band even if i didn't see the show. It didnt seem like there were more then a few there, but I could be wrong. Josh and I popped in the car and started driving to Chicago. We slept in some rest stop with lots of trucks who had their moters running all night. Needles to say the car was not very comfortable, and I didnt get much sleep because I was too hyped about the Chicago show. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 01:49:21 -0400 From: Matt Stanich To: tvos@netcore.ca, email_address_removed Subject: Part 3 - Chicago // possible spoiler Message-ID: WARNING - POSSIBLE SPOILER Josh and I were on the road at 8:30am and we arrived in Chicago at 10:30. We took a leisurely drive around the city, even drove by the HOB for old times sake. After finding the Vic (no proble there) we wandreed the streets trying to find paking. Finally I parked at a 7-11 a few blocks up the street, but later moved and parked on a side street in front of a construction site from fear of being towed. There were 4 people in line when we got there. Three of the were really cool and came up and talked to us, the other one just sat on the walk and drank. Apparently Vinnie had come out with warm six pack of Sam-Adams and put it in the trash. This guy drank it all, and was so stupid that he never realised that they had twist off caps, so he spent a good amount of time trying to open them on some kind of fire hydrent. Later this guy lit up in the middle of the street, and offered anyone/everyone a drag off his joint. He even asked a cola deliverly guy and some of the Vic staff, what an idiot! We were all hoping he would get arrested. He claimed to have been at the show where the PMU video was shot. Later when this guy had to piss, and was to lazy to go to a store, he would walk across the street and go between some cars or behing a dumpster, very classy. Other highlights of the morning included watching girls walk by (hey I live in Houghton can you blame me?). The drunk/high guy yelling at everyone inthere cars who were stopped at the traffic light, and reieving a bmg pacakage for Vinnie. Oh and don't forget the two gay guys who would come by every half hour from 11-1. They were always asking for a smoke or spare change. One guy had just gotten seriously fucked, he had scars all over his head, I would guess about 20" in total. The other guy claimed he had just gotten out of brain sugury, but I don't believe it. Anyways the one with the scars was really stupid. First pass he asks who we are seeing and we tell him DT. Then on his next pass he asks us the same thing, and we tell him Hanson and the Spice girls, and he seems cool with it. His slightly smarter friend stopped another guy walking down the street, and asked him out of the blue if he had ever served in the military. He says no, and asks why, at which point our friend points to his shirt. To make it short it was an "Old Navy" t-shirt. Scott 'weasel' Hansen was the first of the jammers to arrive, and upon seeing my jam shirt asked if I was Chris 'silent p' Ptacek. I said no and we chatted for a bit. Then he went to eat, and then Chris and Mads, and a few others showed up. By 4:00 a good number of jammers had shown up including thoes above but also Dale, Derek 'I want that necklace', Todd 'Geoff Tate', and Al. All of you were a blast to be with. We tricked a bus full of school kids into thinking we were seeing Hanson and the Spice Girls. They then started screaming about how Hanson sucked, several made gang signs, and one kid started shooting us with a fake gun. I was just happy that was not a real gun, man that would suck. Between 4:30 and 5:00 the band showed and Scott 'weasel' Hansen used his magical powers to get him and two of his friends backstage. He also managed to score, or 'weasel' as some say, backstage passes and a photo permit. Chris was supposed to be on Derek's list, but Derek had forgotten to put him on, but that got taken care of when they went for some private fun in the Alley. Around this time the line started growing fast, the overhang started dripping, and the line nazi made his apperence. The nazi must have come out three or four time to 'straighten' out the line so the good people of Chicago could get home. As the show drew nearer, time slowed down. Scott gave full reports of the soud checks and all the freakish Vic staff came out of the woodwork. Meanwhile the bus must have circled the block about 4-5 time trying to figure out how/where to park. In the show we all had 1'st or 2'nd row center, and they played LTE before FOTM cmae on. FOTM were pretty good, much better than BW. FOTM knew what to expect from the crowd, and saved their best songs for last. They didnt talk to much (a sure way to lose the crowd), and they were all smiles and full of energy. By the end of the set I was impressed with them and actually reallyu enjoyed their set. Before DT came on they played the usual array of b-sides, and then clockwork orange. Scott jumped the fence, and took lots of photos during the first three songs (and we better see them damn it!). Scott had to go around the back to come back onto the main floor, but withing a matter of minutes he somehow appered back at the front. The set was awsome, TOT was AMAZING, cant say enough about this song. Mike chucking fruit at Derek was funny. During mikes solo, the first guy he went to was the same guy who was drinking/toking/pissing outside before the show. I thought this guy sucked at drums. All he did was his the drum as fas and as hard as he could, no beat. He could not follow Mike on the me do-you do part. Mike then went over to the other side and picked a pretty good guy out. This guy was on top of the beat, nad played a nice duet with Mike with consisted of a neat beat alternating between the rim and the tom. Mike then brought Meledy(sp??) out and let her drum some. All in all I thought Mikes solo was a lot better than it was in the fall. I also thought Mike was going to trip over the Chris/Mads banner when they threw it up, man would that hve been funny. It was also very cool when Derek broak out his banner, and when JLB displayed it for all to see. When JP played Para. Shift from LTE, I brought out my copy of LTE that I had in my pocket. He liked it and smiled at me. Later on during one of his solos I made some faces at him, he seemed to get a kick out of that. My three fav songs were probably LITS TOT and LTL, all were absolutely mind numbing. After the show I went back to the car and got a drink (while Chris and Scott were 'weaseling' around back stage). I thought of grabbing my photo in case JM came out but I figured that would *never* happen so I left it there. I still had my tourbook and LTE(for JP to sign). After a bit the rest of the jammers came out and we talked about the show. JM came out first and headed for the bus as usual. Then came James, followed by JP and lastly Mike (Derek was off with a special lady). The fans outside the Vic were as a whole much cooler than the fans in Detroit, not very many 'psycho fans', which is odd considering there were more people outside the Vic, and I was glad to see, no bible toting manics. I talked to JP about adding the circus deal into his solo (but I posted about that a few jams ago) and got him to sign my LTE. Someone asked James if he would get JM to come out, and I was thinking to myself 'yah right'. But in a bit JM came out and was very cool. I got him to sign my tour book (as I was cursing myself for not bringing my photo). It was really cool meeting JM and he even sopke to me (woo-hoo). Lastly I saw Mike and he remembered me from Detroit. James gave his 'I've got two sides' bit again, which makes me suspect he uses that line at every gig, anyone care to comment? Sorry to everyone that I could not stick around for grub but I got back with only a half hour to spare. Anyhoo I had a great time, and I have decided to make Mike something over the summer and give it to him when they tour with DP/ELP. SO all you jammers from the Chi-town show ready to meet there again for the DT/DP/ELP tour. We can all get seats together. We could even meet at someones house for a BBQ before hand. Well there you have it, a big long review that did not really say to much but hey, I gotta move up on the MFP list somehow.
