Run-DMC, Ice-T, and A Tribe Called Quest are all talented, I think both lyrically and musically. Believe it or not, I have listened to rap in the past, though I haven't in quite a while. I don't say this putting myself above anyone or anything like that(hear me Chris Ptacek..hehehe) I still can't go along with what some people say though, that if it's popular, it must be good. Puff is popular, and he entertains a lot of people, I just think it's kind of sad that he can't put his efforts somewhere else that might be a tad more creative than what he's currently doing....but hell, that's just my opinion, and it's not the word of God(Though Chris thinks I think it is....heh) BTW, I think that the Ben Folds Five is pretty damn good, a lot of people are seeing that now too, the only thing that sux about that is that their prices are going up...$18 bucks at the House of Blues for a 1:30 hour set??? c'mon.....They used to be a whole lot cheaper when they were playing Tipitina's.... -- Geaux Tigers!!!! http://www.angelfire.com/la/qryche/index.html "I Know If I Try, I'll Get Where I'm Going/ Keeping My Eyes On the Sky" -"Some People Fly" by Queensryche ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 May 1998 23:36:58 -0700 From: James Thorpe To: Subject: DALI'S DILEMMA / S.F DREAM THEATER SHOW Message-ID: <01bd7d70$5d305660$1aa4d6d0@internet> Hello Jammers! Just wanted to pass some exciting news with what's going on with Dali's Dilemma if you haven't heard already. I listened to all their songs with Matt B's vocals and they are awesome!!! Hooks galore. They will be going into the Big Studio and finishing up the final mix in a couple weeks. Heard some of 'The Age of Impact.' It sounds really good. Great progressive writing. Some of it reminds me of Yes but more heavier and with John P's incredible melodic playing. Simular to LTE in that aspect. I just added a couple pics of Matt Guillory on my web-page if you don't know him. He's the insane guy behind the keys in Dali's Dilemma. :) Sorry for the long download times. I'm still learning about web-designing. I like big pictures. I also will be going to the S.F Dream Theater show at Maritime Hall. I hope I can meet all you popular people on this list. Oh yeah, and that guy Dr. Mosh. Finally we can hook up. :) :) If you guys like Glenn Hughes, he will be playing their this Wednesday or Thursday I believe. I just about swallered my adams apple when i heard the vj on mtv say quote "they are both geniuses" in re to sting and puff daddy. Mucho ass kisses for some reason... go figure. have you noticed the rap version of the "knight rider" theme song? how unfooooookinbelievable!!! I guess anything that easy to recognize is fair game these days. Till they use up all the TV/movie theme songs and classic rock songs... I guess it was inevitable... but know this.... I got dibs on the INSPECTOR GADGET theme...!!!! Anyone craps over that song and I'm suing and you're all my witnesses... it was my idea!! Whats the hardest part of writing a song? Coming up with that perfect hook/melody thats gonna make the song. I've spent loads of time chasing song ideas... some good some bad. and part of being a GOOD songwriter is recognizing the good stuff when you hear it and explore it. Makes ya happy when it happens.... so to go and take "established" eargrabbers and use those is cheating themselves. Sure it'll make them constipated with money. but let em have it... I'll take the little thrills of creating music any day... fame, fortune? pah!!! --- NOTICE: if you've heard that Deftones song.. where the guy is screaming SHAAAAAARK!!! or something... the guitar riff sounds like the same one from near the beginning of ACOS. Except that they repeat it about a million times... can we say monotonous (can we spell it?) ? NEW PROJECT!!! take each of the riffs from ACOS and turn them into a full fledge song... scream over it.... and rake in the cash!! To: "'Multiple recipients of list'" Subject: My opinion on I&W and Awake Message-ID: <98May12.103121gmt+message_id_removed.se> Hi jAmMeRs! Well, I guess it's no longer a thread or anything, but I've given the mentioned albums a good listen and here's what I think about the songs. The first ratings ("Was") is from when I wasn't into DT or prog that much - in fact, I&W and Awake were the second and third "prog" album to reach my Cd player ("The Wall" wa sthe first). I've listened to them for about 5 months (oh, kill me - way too little time!). Images & Words -------------- 1. Pull me Under - Was A+, Now A Still one of my favourites as the first DT song I heard. 2. Another Day - Was B-, Now A- I love the melody, although I hate saxophones... 3. Take the Time - Was B, Now B+ I've learned to think of this as a good song, but it's still a little too... what should I say... crazy! 4. Surrounded - Was C+, Now A This song has grown! I love it! 5. Metropolis - Was D+. Now B A good song, but the instrumental middle section totally ruins the atmosphere built up during the vocal parts. 6. Under A Glass Moon - Was B, Now A+ This is really something! YEEEEHAAH! 7. Wait for sleep - Was C+, Now B- James's voice does it all - I usually don't like piano ballads. 8. Learning to live - Was C, Now A+ I almost hated it at first, thought it sounded all messed up and strange, now it's one of my absolute DT favourites! Awake ----- 1. 6:00 - Was C+, Now A- I had a problem with James's new vocal style as well as with the chorus, but I've learned to like it now. 2. Caught in a Web - Was B, now B- It bores me a bit. 3. Innocence Faded - Was C, Now D+ I don't like it at all. 4. Erotomania - Was A, Now A It's groovy, and when good parts from every song are jammed together, how can it be other than good? 5. Voices - Was A+, Now B+ I think I listened too much to this - I'm tired of it. 6. The Silent Man - Was B-, Now A- I don't like the guitar solo, that's all. 7. The Mirror - Was C, Now A- I had a problem with the "strange" sound of the 7-string axe's somewhat "untuned" sound, but when I came over that, I could really enjoy the song. 8. Lie - Was C-, Now A- Almost the same as with The Mirror. 9. Lifting Shadows... - Was B-, Now A It's lovely! I used to have a problem with the break from the U2-style first bit, but now it's all okay. 10. Scarred - Was B+, Now A+ IMO, the best song on Awake. 11. Space-Dye Vest - Was B-, Now D+ Sounds kind of wrong, in some mysterious way... OK, that's it. Hope I didn't bore you. Rick Flair, everyone's favorite WCW wrestler made it higher than Leonardo DiCaprio. I love when the general public decides to make a mockery of things as stupid as a "Most Beautiful Person Poll." I especially liked reading People's reluctant acceptance blurb. They even interviewed the guy, and put a picture up of him wearing a bunny suit! T-minus less than a week until LA HoB.
